*Suggestions on making your MRE's better.* :) They are missing a BIG item, one of the big three life requirements. This is a bug-bear of mine - you see SO many survivalist/camping vids on the sexy things, like how to light a fire or cook food, but (try it yourself) try and find a video on how to make a safe toilet etc. People ignore the "icky" things. Your MRE should have one tampon and one un-lubricated condom in each bag - both items have multiple survival uses (tinder, water carrying), as well as their design uses.
The only thing I would suggest is to take the entrees out of the cardboard box, it saves a lot on space. Its how I put them in my bug out bags, makes them much smaller and you can pack it easier but I do like the idea of customizing your MREs with stuff you have found is better. Thanks for the tips!
I always wondered why the bags were so, inefficient. I'm no design engineer (yet) but it seems like vacuum sealing would maximize it's compactness, as well as aide in preservation
Great MRE the military should hire you to make all their mre's. I know some VET's who would have loved to have gotten stuff like that when they wher overseas.
This is, as usual with Falia, a very professionally presented video with no wasted time, very clear procedures and needed links. I can make good use of this for my photography forays and will pass it along to my son, the hunter/backpacker, who I am sure will enjoy it as much as I did. THANKS SO MUCH!
Great information and clearly presented. Thank you. Having the flavors and variety that you really enjoy is a great comfort in what is often a very uncomfortable situation.
That is a great idea. As far as caffeine, try some stay alert gum. I used it all the time during my deployment. It comes in small packs of 5 pieces and a case won't set you back too far. They have more flavors now but I was stuck with cinnamon which was nasty but I got used to it.
Excellent job with the MRE video! I subscribed. Looking forward to what you do in the future. Loved the fact that you included where to buy the components.
I like adding the elly beam. I have assembled my own MREs for keep on my boat and a few trips. I generally remove the boxes to save on weight and space. Every inch counts on a boat I must say I have unused a lot of standard mil heaters and never had one fail. Not even the old style ones
Awesome idea, thanks for sharing..I've been vac sealing items for years, such as matches, tinder, homemade jerky and items for boating..great to hear from you, hope all is well you and the girls.
Hey great info, thank-you!!! On the shelf life, freeze dried is a lot longer than advertised. Steve1989 ate one from the 1970's and it was still good, that's at more than 40 years old.
Give the white calcium carbonate pack a few flicks with your finger to break up the contents, then use as normal. They harden up after time and dont accept the water inside sometimes
I have 15lbs 5oz of food in my INCH bag, it is my single heaviest item. I chose food I like and that is preferable light weight and nutritious. I figure that the food would carry me for about 25 days and most of it has expiration dates at least two years away. The main problem with most MREs is that they weigh 4-5 lbs so for the weight of my 25 day supply I would only have 4-5 days of food. You do great jobs on your videos . I liked the one where you cook different things in the heating packets. The elements (and some come with salt water) are heavy too so I took all of them out. I have some pepper videos, including some I have yet to upload, a couple of which deal with food. In one I show how to keep down the weight and volume while maintaining nutritional needs. Thanks for your videos.
Instead of MRE, I use Mylar bag with oxygen absorber to store rice and beans for emergency food. Any idea on getting similar protein food like Mountain House beef stew but with much less sodium? Btw, low your videos very informative.
Billy C Not sure about that particular flavor, but there are some low-sodium Mt. House options and some reduced-sodium MRE entrees. You could also just check around and compare the ingredients of different freeze-dried meal options at your local sporting-goods/outdoor/hunting/camping stores.
Great video and I love the idea of making your own MRE. When I was in the military we generally just stripped down the MRE to just what we wanted, then traded or got rid of the rest. I noticed you didn't put the gum in there. The gum was a way for you to brush your teeth if you didn't have your tooth brush available. An idea you might want to try is, instead of double bagging it with food savor bags is to use a Ziploc or similar bag as the initial bag then use a food savor bag.
Clancyman2012 Gum would be a great addition, thanks! I don't like the idea of vacuum-sealing a ziplock, though, because too much air would be trapped inside. It was even difficult to press all the air out of my little ziplocked toilet-paper bags inside.
Great video, as always. Do you realize that you have almost 73,000 subscribers? That's awesome. Wow I have a long way to go. Great channel with viable content. I share it a lot with any woman who is considering carrying concealed, or gun reviews.
Ooh, save and wash your Mt House house bags. Trim the orn top. Fold and keep with homemade MRE's that have ramen! Easy to make ramen in the Mt House bags! Love the MRE rubbermaid, going to have to look for one! Thanks for a great vid! Maybe get the accessories and TP at an Army/Navy store? I'm headed to out nearest Army/Navy store to see about getting some supplies soon...I think we're almost at the rapids!
Thanks Falia. I appreciate the cost comparison at the end: I'm not that picky, so I'm just fine with the prepacked MRE. And I like the Forrest Gump "life is like a box of chocolates" aspect of opening one. And also a nice reminder of the shelf life of MREs. You reminded me that I need to order new ones and dispose of the old ones.
Nice video. One tip I have found is not to skimp on the wet wipes. Make sure you get the ones in mylar (like the ones you used.) I made the mistake and used some of the cheapo ones that feel like they are sealed in paper and when I vac sealed them they bled out and leaked in the vac bag. Big, damp, smelly mess.
I still haven't found hiking/emergency food that I'm 100% happy with. Most of the options that I can think of have way too much salt, sugar, and saturated fat in them and not enough fiber and protein. MREs are a perfect example of this. People like to joke that MREs make them poop bricks, and that shouldn't be surprising since they barely have any fiber in them. Personally, I mostly eat a combination of protein bars and energy bars when I go hiking. They're the easiest food to use in the outdoors in my opinion. You don't have to cook or clean anything. And you don't have to worry about adding water to them, either. And you don't even have to worry about getting your food dirty because you'll only be touching the wrapper. It's also really easy to throw the wrappers in your pack when you're done. My personal favorites are Quest bars since they have 20 grams of protein per bar, a whopping 64% of the fiber that you need, only a couple grams of sugar, and not a lot of salt or saturated fat. The downside with Quest bars is the cost and their relatively small number of calories. I'll also eat some homemade trail mix that's low in sugar, sodium, and saturated fat and high in fiber and protein. Some well-thought-out homemade trail mix will give you everything that you need and is very convenient to eat. I used to mostly use freeze dried meals and MREs, but they're too much hassle and not healthy in my opinion.
TaskForceSixTwoSix I agree, they're not very healthy, but I think that's alright because I'm not going to be eating these often - Just in limited situations... The Epicenter also has some reduced-sodium entrees as an option.
ga03ram I haven't included any specific breakfast items in my MREs, but they sell MRE Maple Pork Sausage Patties, Apple-Maple Oatmeal, Sausage with Gravy, Hash Browns w/ Bacon, Maple Muffin Tops, etc...... (I haven't tried any of those, but they are listed at The Epicenter)
I had no idea you could buy the items separately. I never eat everything in there and it would be much more space/weight/calorie efficient if I liked it all.
Good day. Just came across your video today. Whao I love it. Please I really need to get across to you. I live and work in Abuja Nigeria and I want to start MRE here in Nigeria I need your advise.

faliaphotography this was a great vid very informative I served in USMC and the French Foreign Legion and there MRE had cans for the main meal and wine LOL Ill have to find some freeze dried wine to pack in my homemade mre LOL.
Awesome, how did you like being a legionnaire? I was a navy corpsman and heard a bit about you guys, but not enough to have any real reference. What I did hear was impressive.

Trick with the standard MRE heater - chuck the salt into the FRH after the mains have gone in, and before the water goes it.. that way, saline is hitting the catalytic heater... means a more aggressive reaction.
Instead of disassembling standard MRE's I wonder if you could go to some of the aftermarket mre company's and "build your own" using individual products?
pfarnsworth84 Zipfizz drink-mix containers. I found them on sale for a great price, but didn't like the ingredients so I just dumped them out. I also tested them to make sure they were waterproof.
Great ideas...be careful with the Food Saver brand. This was a while back, but don't try to store your own food, because I've had a lot of Food Saver bags loose their vacuum seal over time. You don't want to get sick with food poisoning when you're trying to survive! Using the MREs inside the food saver pouch is a great idea!
She tested some of the heaters that come with MRE's, which may have been in storage for a long time. I assume that means the heaters don't have as long a shelf life as the food itself, and that is why she bought new, non-MRE heaters. Since they are bought new, and possibly are of a better quality to start with (being a different design/brand), they are more reliable than some old heater that has been in storage for who knows how long,
I would double it in a gallon freeze ziplock bag, that way you can reseal stuff when your out in the field, pack away trash, still reinforce the vacuum seal bags but save on coat of the vacuum seal bags.
Have you tried solar cooking? I've cooked food in a can with a turkey bag and some tinfoil for a reflector - worked great - at least on sunny days! :^) Cardboard box types work too, but not as portable. Thanks for the video! Going to give it a whirl now that my MREs are depleted.
13 bucks per meal definitely a backup food source as that would be way to expensive for everyday meals although this is a well put together video and it was amazing to learn you could by those things individualy
Take your entree and side out of their boxes. They aren't necessary and add weight and bulk. Beef them up with candy and protein bars and snacks to carry you over to your next meal. Water purification tablets go into mine. Just suggestions. You did very well.

I remember seeing the MRE for the first time when I was in the military.. first thought: Damn this is big! I thought it would be like a little can/box with concentrated nutrition (and I know they exist, people call them "canned dead man"). It took a lot of space in my pack.
I checked making my own MRE back 20 years ago, then 10 years ago, then last year. Only during my check last year was making my own MRE worth the effort cost wise. This leads me to believe that today's MRE is wayy overpriced for what it provides, so that homemade MRE's are a valid choice. This makes me believe that there are too many "middlemen" between the source, and my storage closet. So, I will start making my own MRE's forthwith.
The link provided does not work. I tried searching on Google for other sites to order from,,,,,nada. Could someone please provide a working link so I can order some of these. Thanks, Much appreciated!
well done video. i make my own "MRE's" too (sorta). i make a double serving of a meal, like chili or whatever, then i eat half and dehydrate the other half. which is a lot like your mountain house thing there. i've never had those, but i have noticed them in camping stores and they're expensive, at least in my opinion. i can make a VERY hearty meal that's every bit as light weight, but costs me pennies compared to that freeze dried stuff. anyway, thumbs up :-) great videos..
*Suggestions on making your MRE's better.* :)

i do hope you're checking date codes oh and adding a bit of salt with the water to the FRH will get them heated just fine.
You are so awesome! I would have never thought to make your own MRE! I should really watch your channel more!
Great idea. I may have to try that. Thanks
How did you make your waterproof match kit? Ever think of doing a short video about it?
How do you heat water for your coffee or do you drink it cold?

I checked making my own MRE back 20 years ago, then 10 years ago, then last year. Only during my check last year was making my own MRE worth the effort cost wise. This leads me to believe that today's MRE is wayy overpriced for what it provides, so that homemade MRE's are a valid choice. This makes me believe that there are too many "middlemen" between the source, and my storage closet. So, I will start making my own MRE's forthwith.
Great info thanks for sharing
The link provided does not work. I tried searching on Google for other sites to order from,,,,,nada. Could someone please provide a working link so I can order some of these. Thanks, Much appreciated!
Outstanding!
In boot camp we had C-Rats, Once in the fleet we had MRE's.
It says on the bottom of the label for the MRE from the government that it is unlawful for commercial resale, so how would that ever be an option?
well done video. i make my own "MRE's" too (sorta). i make a double serving of a meal, like chili or whatever, then i eat half and dehydrate the other half. which is a lot like your mountain house thing there. i've never had those, but i have noticed them in camping stores and they're expensive, at least in my opinion. i can make a VERY hearty meal that's every bit as light weight, but costs me pennies compared to that freeze dried stuff. anyway, thumbs up :-) great videos..
Great vid.
Blatant Abuse thanks
I know MRE's are here to stay......but I still prefer the C-Ration meals. The LRRP rations were pretty good to.
+MrAzrancher i use to eat the k rations in the army. in 1969-1971, the were pretty good.
Where do you buy your MREs?
The only thing I have in my MRE is toliet paper
I bet you were quite prepared for 2020! Lol
Neat idea.

Second thought...will you add a multi-vitamin to these kits?
Thanks for the Video
