my only memory of Frogger was when i was in my teens and went to this thing called Video Games Live (a concert that showcased different music from different games). It was hosted by Tommy Tallarico, and during the intermission the cohost just shouted to people milling around in the lobby "HEY WHO WANTS TO PLAY FROGGER!?" i just shot my hand up instantly and me and this other dude who looked way older than me got picked. apparently what i signed up for was to go on stage after the intermission, and face the other dude in a plug n' play version of frogger with Tommy watching right next to us. whoever got the highest score won some fancy gaming laptop. so after intermission we go on stage, and my naive, teen self ended up losing horribly and Tommy was like "but don't feel bad, even though you don't get the laptop you get the Frogger plug n' play so you can keep playing at home!!" it was a weird mixture of embarrassment and fun lol.

This was the first game that made me rage, I'd throw my controller and yell. Never did that prior, and honestly never did it so much after either.
But I grinded out the game so much for maybe two years and eventually 100% finished it. I have no idea how I did it.

I love this game so much! It’s definitely one of my favorites, but I TOTALLY understand why a lot of people don’t like it. It is indescribably difficult, almost to the point of being self-parody. However, I really do gravitate towards very challenging arcade-style games like it, and I probably also wouldn’t like it as much if I didn’t have the locations of everything memorized after having played it for 23 years. When I was a kid hanging out in my house back in the 90s and I had nothing to do but play a couple of computer games, I would get REALLY good at them. Also, I find this game to be way easier to play on a keyboard with the arrow keys rather than with a PlayStation controller.

I guess I’m a wacko, because I mastered this game. I played it so many times through that I memorized all the patterns, all the shortcuts, every level’s idiosyncrasies. Yes, this game can be hard, but once you get the feel of a level, you will own it. Even watching these brief gameplay clips again after all these years, I can feel the rhythm.
That said, I had the PC version growing up, which apparently had a more forgiving timer on most levels (e.g. Big Boulder Alley, one of the most challenging levels in the game, gave you 99 seconds on PC but much less on PlayStation). Why that is, I will likely never know.

Not sure if anyone has said this yet, but there's a reason why so many things in this game seem like they're moving too fast, it's because they actually are. Strangely despite debuting in North America, the game was actually programmed in the PAL format which runs at 50Mhz compared to 60Mhz in NTSC we actually played it on, and the devs somehow overlooked that. Thus, the entire game is running over 15% faster than it was designed to.

OK man... You absolutely have a lot of valid criticisms on Frogger's game design, buuuut... being someone who played it a lot as a kid, there was definitely an appeal to the whole "trial and error" format for a kid who had a lot of free time to burn. The gameplay was satisfying enough that I'd keep coming back to it, and the harder levels would take loads and loads of attempts, but that wasn't a bad thing as a kid. It just felt all the more satisfying when you finally did conquer one of those harder levels. Just the Uncanny Crusher and Big Boulder Alley levels were totally impossible then (and still are now).
Also the high score system was fun for families with lots of siblings. But I realize I'm not in the majority here.
Can't wait to hear you talk about Frogger Beyond. For once, I don't feel so alone anymore.

This was the first video game that I've ever played in my life. While I do agree that this game is frustratingly challenging, I still truly believe this game did show good efforts into showing the platforms and the obstacles that Frogger has to face on each level. I also thought the 3D animation for its time was pretty cool and the gameplay was pretty decent, despite how frustrating it is to complete.

Perhaps its the nostalgia glasses, but I loved this game as a kid.
Figuring out where the frogs were and having to rush there made the challenge so much more rewarding to finish.
Once you played a level you unlocked the next, and really didn't have to go back to the old ones, except to beat your hs.
It was good that the game was so hard, as it added a lot of playtime to it. Not every game is gonna be easy.
That being said, the game timings that forced you to die if it didnt line up were bs. That much I'll give you.
Other than that, it was a phenomenal game that deserves praise for the time it came out in.

Oh my god, this was possibly my very first video game. Our computer came with Sonic 3, but I recall playing this even more than that one. Seeing that level where you’re in the dark, as well as the factory/magma one, the birds you fly on the backs on, the excessively difficult enemy layout, the oil slick level, as well those fuckin’ lawn mowers...man, the memories as a 7-10 year old are coming back hard!
You know, I never realized how much jank it had, but I do remember it taking me several years to beat lol with not much else to play, I didn’t really register the trial and error as being problematic. Childhood perception is something I sorely miss.

I have a lot of memories playing this game as a kid. I didn't own it, but my cousins did and we would play it every chance we got. I remember being frustrated with some of the levels... Especially the sewer level. The original copy they had broke, so we were left without playing Frogged for a while. Many years later, they got it back as a Christmas present and we played it some more.

There was this odd educational solo and coop version of frogger, where you had a theme and had to finish the level picking the correct word. It was my jam back in primer school. When crossy road came out I was also pretty absorbed by it. I guess it's just my type of arcade game.

DUDE, my nostalgia levels are tripping right now! This game was my jam as a little kid. I never played the original arcade titles, so this was my introduction to the series. My family had it for our PC, and I can't count how many times I played it on that old cube monitor (I feel old, knowing my generation will be the last to remember those). The 3D animated intro was something I always looked forward to. I don't remember ever beating it though, I think the farthest I got was the factory level. Sigh, memories...
