    Hi Johan, I have just watched Alex going out to catch King Fish. He hooked into a Kahawai and made the comment that “Thank God that Kahawai don’t grow to the same size as King-is, they would be impossible to catch!”. Reminds me watching you struggle with your Kahawai catching expedition. Cheers mate, have a good one. Harera

    Hi Johan, glad to see you in your natural element catching some lovely trout. It seems that the holiday break did not hamper your technique! I love this stream as it always surprises you with some big trout. Cheers mate, see you next year, I hope. Harera

      Thanks Piere, after the first fish I stopped getting snags and bushes so much 😂 and started settling in again. This stream certainly holds some monsters, especially browns. Look forward to catching up some time in the new year.

    Hi, thanks for a lovely and entertaining view on the two types of fishing. I have not had great success with indicator fishing, I rather use my switch rod with a #6 Line. I have recently bought a 9‘9“ OPST switch rod in 3 weight, which will combine with my Traper GST reel with the euro Nymph line.
    I’m looking forward to trying it out to see what it can do, so I thoroughly enjoyed your video. I have taken note of your setup and will try it out as well. Many thanks, cheers.

    • @CrazyAboutFlyFishing
      @CrazyAboutFlyFishing 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats awesome thanks. Those OPST rods are nice. Let me know how it works for the euro setup. If never tried it for that.. If you will be using a euro flyline make sure you either keep your leader short enough never to have the junction with fly line inside the rod tip or use a superglue splice. Its the only way to join the leader to the flyline that allows it to go smoothly through the guides. I find a splice with 10 to 15 foot of 2x two tone indicator line or chameleon or something like that works well. If you use the Traper GST line it's a bit of a challenge as the core is very thin but it is doable. Tactical flyfisher has a great video about it.

    Love the commitment - driving several hours then still getting there in the dark- another benefit of euro nymphing is you can use one fly only and increase the chances of getting those browns to the net. FYI there are some trevally schools around Auckland now

    • @CrazyAboutFlyFishing
      @CrazyAboutFlyFishing 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup we left at 2am 🤣 and you are right about the single fly. Its tempting to always end up with two flies. What fly do you find works best for those browns? I got mine on a squirmy worm this time. I seem to find they go often go for strange things. I once got one on an egg pattern in the middle of summer. I cast it out of frustration after about 20 fly changes and it went over and grabbed it half a meter away after a wayward cast 🤣

    Top video mate. I just love these waters, some lovely fish caught. Your right on the indicator rig having more slack in the system and can be a hindrance some times when striking for takes. I use less of that rig these day and tend to go more dry dropper or naked nymphing mostly. I find you don't always get the right drift with indicator rig set up but for deeper pools where it's harder to see the fish I use it. They all have there strengths and weaknesses at the end of the day. You just do what your personal preference is, nobody else's. Nice work Johan

    • @CrazyAboutFlyFishing
      @CrazyAboutFlyFishing 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks mate, much appreciated. It's amazing how quick fish can take and spit. We had on sight fished yester in shallow water with a dry dropper rig and it took and spat the nymph before the dry even moved. I watched it all from the bank as I filmed Pawel.

    Nice video Johan. The euronymph technique worked well in that tight little stream. You seem to fish small snaggy streams quite often, so a very good test of skill. I would be banned from your videos for cussing :)

    Euro isn’t real fly fishing

    • @CrazyAboutFlyFishing
      @CrazyAboutFlyFishing 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can see your point, but define real fly fishing? Euro nymphing is considered fly fishing based on our local regs. As fly fishing grows and new methods are developed so changes the definition. I acknowledge the casting part is fairly different though but for the rest it is the same.

    • @Paul-yv5yj
      @Paul-yv5yj 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting point. But does Euro style fly fishing have to be 'real' fly fishing?

    • @OnTheFlyNZ
      @OnTheFlyNZ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Many in europe say the same about indicator nymphing. Many spey fisherman say the same about any type of nymphing. Unless your dressed in suspenders only fishing a single hand spey with a silk fly line then you have no real basis for that claim.
