A very refreshing interpretation of this excellent étude. It's rare to witness such economy of pedalling. Your variation evoking the trumpeting of elephants is the only one of the many I've heard that fulfils the composer's dynamic markings. There is much to admire in this performance. Perhaps you know the Douze Preludes-Poèmes by Charles Tournemire or the intriguing piano pieces by Jehan Alain (his études or 'Lumière Qui Tombe D'Un Vasistas' for example)?
What a pleasure to study and enjoy your interpretation of this etude! Especially your version of the XIV and XV variations (trombata) is a delight to watch, at least in my perception. Thank you a lot for sharing this video! Le Festin is one of the most playful pieces I've worked on so far, it's pure joy to go with its "weirdness" - a very fitting complement to this week's series!
Well, I am not sure I would say I have these works in my "repertoire", since I just know them from the score but never actually played them. They are not the kind of music that people expect from me in concert; but my videos here are in general not from my concert repertoire, so it seems a good opportunity to present such works to a public.
Very nice performance! What impressed me the most was the part at 7:09 - 7:20 , because it really does sound like dogs barking, and I think you've captured that so well in that variation.
Lately, Alkan has become one of my favorite composers. For many years, it was Rachmaninoff and Liszt; but lately, the music of Chopin and Alkan is always on my mind, as were Rachmaninoff and Liszt
Thanks to Chopin, in the summer of 1991 I fell in love with the piano, and in this month of October 2023, I have resumed a taste for Chopin, and for Charles Gustav Alkan.
This Alkan composition had been used as example in the italian youtube cultural video "Lezioni di Musica - Survivorship Bias" of the channel "musicamonteverde". Is a really very very interesting video of this new interesting channel
Excellent performance, you're going to make Alkan a lot of friends! I found the variation at 3.03 very attractive and also the theme itself, slightly reminiscent in a funny way, of the theme from Paganini's 24th Caprice, both have the same kind of infectious bounce that's very memorable.
I have recordings of this piece by eight different performers. Each recording has its own character. I didn't really think there could be some ninth different understanding of this lovely and curious piece. I was wrong! Thank you.
What else to expect ? 😆 Esope is said to have been both subtly intelligent and very ugly : he was "of loathsome aspect... potbellied, misshapen of head, snub-nosed, swarthy, dwarfish, bandy-legged, short-armed, squint-eyed, liver-lipped-a portentous monstrosity," (source Wikipedia bit.ly/3exnXcI). Esope's "feast of tongues" (French "festin" = feast, banquet) is also a very odd story that one can for example read here bit.ly/2XNf1Jh.
Hmm I don't necessarily agree with his explainations, and for sure Hamelin's version is great but his performance is very refreshing and I think it's gorgeous !!
Alkan wrote some amazing stuff. Shame its not played very often due to its extreme difficulties.
I like this form of performance you playing !Thanks you for your daliy sharing.
this is giving off like "a dance party in hell" feeling, I feel a wide range of emotion like excitement, nerve-racking, anxiousness
5:55 that’s the first time I heard the melody in the LH! I also love how you pronounced the Chromatic movement in the LH just before.
Bravo!

Wow, what a crazy, incredibly powerful, playful and joyous ride! Thank you so much, Kit Armstrong!

Excellent performance! I didn’t know you had so much Alkan in your repertoire.

This would be a great concert piece!@@kitcarmstrong

Great performance! In my opinion, there is nothing unattractive about this piece. It is pure ingenious perfection
True, I was also surprised by his "contextualisation". I always found this an elegant and attractive variation series... !

very sharp and expressive, good job!
Wonderful and beautiful sonata. I love it
Thanks a lot dear Mister Kit for this Alkan🙏🙏🙏🇨🇭
I have enjoyed your channel for a few months... you continue to suprise me. Great channel
Lately, Alkan has become one of my favorite composers. For many years, it was Rachmaninoff and Liszt; but lately, the music of Chopin and Alkan is always on my mind, as were Rachmaninoff and Liszt
God I would so go to a concert/seminar led by you if you were in my city 😭
Thanks to Chopin, in the summer of 1991 I fell in love with the piano, and in this month of October 2023, I have resumed a taste for Chopin, and for Charles Gustav Alkan.
I love very very much piano Alkan´s sonata Op. 33, Le cuatro ages, Mov. 1 "20 Years". Is very very beautiful, romantic, and wonderful
Cool interpretation!

You are simply fantastic

Very beautiful and wonderful Alkan´s piano sonata Op.33. Is very modern music in 19th century, likes Musorsky
Bravo

"Allegretto senza licenza quantunque".......
mm Very brilliant skill and touch anyway👍
Is this repertoire Alfred Brendel approved?
This one made me giggle.
How gloriously unattractive!!! And watching your joyful engagement with the music adds to the enjoyment.

2.31 : mice running everywhere!
Your performance needs a dash of fury!

Bravo! If I didn't listen your performance, I would have hated Alkan like a sour grape.
Haha, 6:18 here are the sour grapes! :)
Kit Armstrong Thank you for the information.
It's not unattractive music
Stick with Hamelin. And he doesn't need to explain.
Hmm I don't necessarily agree with his explainations, and for sure Hamelin's version is great but his performance is very refreshing and I think it's gorgeous !!
