      Thank you Sherry! Me neither - I know quite a few were able to do it but I was terrible at it. Also "stepping over" when going around a sharp corner was not something I was comfortable with.... I already found getting one skate in front of the other hard enough! :P

    Lovely memories and pics. I grew up in a little village outside of Dresden Germany called Malschendorf. In the village there was a large pond where people used to skate. There was a big hullabaloo when one or some boys put salt on the ice and made the surface mooshy.....lol...

    • @ModernFolkEmbroidery
      @ModernFolkEmbroidery  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you Hanna! Oh yes, salt!!! We'd get terribly cross if a boat was stupid enough to sail through the fresh ice, break it up, and completely ruin the chance of getting a smooth surface ever again. It was awful trying to skate on those chips... :P

    What fun to see some of your family pictures, Jacob! Speaking as one who never even learned to stand up on old-fashioned roller skates, I'm impressed. And I'm sure you've been told how much you resemble the lady who I assumed to be your mother.
    As you can imagine, most parts of Texas never see snow, although ice storms are not uncommon in the northern part of the state. But we had a substantial snow in Dallas, must have been the winter of 1951-1952. Somewhere there' a photo of my mother or big sister pushing me around in the back yard in a child-sized rocking chair! Sleds were also uncommon, lol.
    Loving your music, too.

      Thank you Natalia! Yes - we really had a lot of freedom to do as we wished. Still, I think kids in the Netherlands have quite a bit of freedom to just get their bikes out and roam the cities and countryside freely - it's really cool how important a good and safe infrastructure is in such cases. I've never felt unsafe just setting out on my own :).

    I remember skating on the canal next the Richelieu river in Quebec. The big cracks in the ice - ugh. The sure skaters would have no problem skating over them but I had fallen because of the big ones and did not like getting hurt. So I'd have to skate with a boyfriend holding my hand! I did not like having cold feet either. Hence, I'd rather be cross-country skiing. I loved that. Being in the woods gliding over the snow. Thanks for sharing your memories. 🙂

    • @ModernFolkEmbroidery
      @ModernFolkEmbroidery  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've never done any skying Louise - but it does look quite amazing. The cracks in the ice are scary - on the lakes, the cracks would actually move and you'd have to get speed, then jump over the crack - which was absolutely terrifying haha! At night, the lakes would sing and sometimes you'd hear this really eerie sound of the ice.... it's a little bit like whalesong - I'm sure you must have heard that as well growing up!

    Thank you for this video and for the stories! I also grew up skating in the winter. Ottawa (my hometown) has a canal that freezes over every winter and some of my fondest memories are stopping by the beaver tail stand and sharing one with my sister (beavertails are kind of flat donuts shaped like a beaver’s tail, sometimes they are also called elephant ears) my oma had a harrowing story of falling through the ice one winter in Drenthe. Luckily there was a farmer nearby who saved her. And I lived in Amsterdam in 2012 when, exceptionally, the canals froze for a short while. The photographer Cris Toala Olivares took some amazing pictures from that time

I don’t remember a lot of canals, etc. around Maastricht when I visited, except for the Meuse River which is a bit intimidating for skating! This is sweet and poetic, thank you for sharing your memories and photos and beautiful music. I never learned to skate, though i tried, and got sprains for trying. I think that if i had skates like the ones you have shown, i may have been successful. With no blades to balance on and no wobbly ankles, they look so sensible and not as intimidating. It would be nice to find some skates like that! Though it may be too late, i am now 65 (as of today!).

      Happy Birthday Shari!!! And you're never too old to try something new - with some proper guidance, who knows, it might be a lot of fun!!! When you look at the photo of me "skating" you'll see just how terribly wobbly my ankles were - there's more of the side of my foot on the ice than actual blades.
