      I think you should sell some of the snails or give some of the snails to some pet stores.Also where do you find the snails at the pet stores?Every time I go to the pet store and looking at the fish section I don’t see any snails.

    So, you ended up with a pest animal you didn’t want but still purchased the ideal setup to care for them properly. Meanwhile some people buy animals they do want and... don’t? You’re the best!

    Oh Lori, you're so compassionate. Most people go to extremes to rid their tanks of "pest snails". And then there's you, who goes out of her way to build them a special tank just for them.
    I watched a video some time ago by Life With Pets (fantastic channel if you want to learn about bettas!), and they prepped their live plants by dipping them in a diluted bleach solution. The ratio was something like 19 parts water 1 part bleach. The plants were dipped in that for a few seconds then rinsed. They did this a few times, and it got rid of the pests on their plants. Good luck with your tank!

      I had pest snails in my tank the best way that doesnt leave them in pain is to remove fish and empty the water then add hot water and 1 cup baking soda and 1 cup salt salt and they die instantly or just hot water i used salt and baking powder because there were thousands of snail i got really depressed after all my fish of old age and so i had the glass complete coverd w snails my filter was also covered in snail most people who have been through depression knows doing things get really difficult so yh hot water kills them instantly because there tiny its cruel but needed to be done

    You can also dose your tank with calcium without D3 to strengthen their shells and it's a little bit more aesthetically pleasing than having a cuttle bone inside of a fishtank!

      She talked about that in her vlog video. Essentially the snails came in on her plants and she didn't know it so she added them to the tank before it was cycling. Keep in mind that tank is still not cycled and then she moved them to the snail tank. Since the other tank was never cycled to the beginning, pest snails, and hardy she made the decision to just get them a tank and "throw em in." But yes usually you wouldn't want to do that.

    I'm honestly not as much of a snail fan to get a whole tank dedicated to them. However I have a beautiful angel/ pleco tank and I have a very large snail in there not sure what species, but he enjoys algae tabs that I got for my plecos its kinda funny to watch him climb on it and eat at it.

  • @elizabethshort6347
    @elizabethshort6347 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    How do you maintain the tank? How often do you change the water? How much water do you change at that time. I'm thinking about doing a snail tank with absolutely no aquatic experience, just for the fun and relativity

    • @CharacteristicLizard
      @CharacteristicLizard 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      snails eat algae and waste, along with stuff like carrots, fish food, and lettuce, so they are kinda self-sustaining but once the water gets mucky, I would recommend turing off the filter, removing most of the water, add more water, and re-prime it and turn back on the filter. I owned a snail once with goldfish *NEVER DO THAT, THE GOLDFISH WILL EAT THE SNAIL* and I cant remember cleaning the tank ever since

    • @breef.7374
      @breef.7374 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Brandy Weaver I recommend you both stop feeding insects and fruit until they eat a crested gecko diet. Pangea or Repashy. They will develop metabolic bone disease if you don’t, they aren’t getting everything they need. A healthy gecko will not starve itself. Offer multiple food dishes with multiple types of flavors. Pangea Insects is always a hit with our geckos - Repashy never works lol I’m a reptile breeder so I’m not talking out of my ass. I’ve got dozens of crested geckos. A trick I did with one of my problem geckos was put the cap of food to his face and make sure he started eating it. Then I would set it down in a place that he could see me doing it - so he knows that that is his food and he knows he already likes it. Any time I do it my problem gecko finishes it every time.

Found three bladder snails yesterday and I want them out but don’t have the heart to kill them. Going to pick up a 5 gallon tank and move them out of the 10 gallon with all my fish. You can use something like Tetra Safe Start Plus to instant cycle a tank. I have used that in every tank that I have and I have never had any issues with fish dying. Now it;s good to use it with something like Prime, as that will detoxify the ammonia and nitrite, but 24 hrs after Prime, dose with TTS+ and add a couple of fish and yo are good to go! Walt 14 days, do a water change and you should be all cycled!

So I was thinking of going ahead and getting him. My theory is that the hitchhiker snails that came on some plants have been fine so he should too???

    Some other fish youtuber states that before putting in ornaments or deco:
    Either
    1. Rinse it well and soak it over night
    2. Soak in hot water for 15 minutes.

    Old tank water works really well to help cycle a new tank faster! Also when putting rocks in you should do it dry and then pour the water over a plastic bag that the rocks came in so you don't risk having murky water. It helps a lot!!

      Tank water doesn't do anything to help with the cycle as the bacteria does not live in the water itself. The bacteria lives on hard surfaces.

    I bought algae and it had snail as well as dragonfly eggs on it. Didn't notice those at first tho. When I randomly threw a leaf into the tank I noticed that something's eating it and I spotted two snails. One week later I had like 10 if them. Then I saw the first of two dragonfly larvae and I killed It because I thought its gonna eat my snails. Spotted the second one and killed it as well. Few weeks later I'm a proud owner of 20-ish snails. Do have an ammonia spike right now tho because I think I threw in too much food or something. I tried feeding them some cucumber slices. Probably only needed to throw in a very small chunk. Be careful not to overfeed. Have a great day (my first experience with am aquarium btw and u didn't inform myself beforehand)

    thank you for this video! I bought a nerite snail for my 10 gallon Betta tank and she started laying eggs everywhere. I knew it was a risk but didn't realize how much I would dislike it. It's littering my plants and spider wood and looks so bad :( so I'm looking into getting her a small tank to live in instead because I feel way too guilty to return her to the store. I don't want to abandon her and the thought of someone else buying her and not caring for her properly leading to her death is a horrible thought. 😭

    I have no gravel or stones or anything in my snail tank. Since I have babies in my tank, it would be super hard to vacuum gravel without sucking up babies that are not on the sides of the tank. They blend in too easily. Now I just do water changes and use a turkey baster to suck up their waste, knowing where the babies are. :-)

    Once I had a 100 gallon community tank and I was about 12 and my sister and cousin busted the tank and the fish dried up and the snails had a little bit of water. They decided to take the snails and pull them out of their shell I cried for a month, it took me one year to get they community tank and a lot of money.

    Pest/bladder snails are really good algae eaters so it’s kinda a win win situation if u left them in the fish tank.
    And u also need algae wafers if the tank isn’t cycled or has algae. It’s good for them😁
    And u also need a oxygen pump because they have gills they breathe oxygen ull kill them if u don’t put a oxygen pump
    Unless u change 3/4 of the water everyday but u won’t have as much algae☺️

If you think that would be an ok ph for the two how exactly would you feed them bc the betta fish is pretty greedy. Just a sinking snail food?

    I made the mistake of buying duckweed for my goldfish tank from a pond store and they happened to have snail eggs in them. Long story short I ended up with well over 200 of the suckers and have since dedicated my old 60 gallon breeder to them and they continue to repopulate. They range from amber gold to a leopard just like the one in the video but some are much bigger. If anyone in this thread needs some good pond cleaners I will rehome for free as long as you pay shipping. It’s honestly overwhelming how fast they repopulate and they will destroy aquarium plants so be careful putting more than one in a tank at a time unless you are using for a pond.

    I have two big spike topped apple snails and one of them is the size of the palm of my hand. She (I say she becauss when they mate female is on bottom and shes always on bottom) produces a lot of mucus and kinda traps my malasian trumpet snails, my bladder and my ramshorn snails in her snail slime.. I dont want to put her in with the little snails but i dont know what else to do for her. Shes got some shell damage from the others eating at her shell for calcium (even though they always have cuttlebone) and i dont want her to get more shell damage or hurt the little guys. What do i do?

    Hi, I really need some help. I just found one of my purple pincher hermit crabs in the saltwater dish, without his shell, missing his large claw, and really pale. He's still moving, though sluggishly, and I currently have him separated from the other tw in a separate container with moist substrate, some food, dechlorinated water and a couple of shells bigger than him.
    Is there anything else I should do/ improve for the little guy?

    • @francisrodriguez3648

      Lori’s Hartland Awesome! They'll love that! The wafers break down themselves but you don't want decaying food in the tank because it will do more harm than good to the water quality (snails are messy to begin with).

    What snails do you recommend for a 10 gallon community tank that has a male betta in?

    • @BigCityBettas
      @BigCityBettas 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ramshorn, nerites and mystery snails all make good candidates.

    • @animationtriangle7216
      @animationtriangle7216 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I recommend Nerites or Apple/mystery/ivory snails. The pros about Nerites is that they can’t produce offspring in fresh water. The pros for apples is that they are amazing algae eaters but the cons is that they are escape artist and will lay eggs outside of the tank if they escape. This has caused people to get sick in Florida since they are pest in Florida and lay eggs everywhere and theres something in their eggs that is toxic, so If you get Apples/mystery snails make sure your lid has no holes.

    For a while I have kept snails as a pet and I have came to the conclusion that for 1 snail you should have 5 gallons. So, the amount of snails you are putting in there won’t be able to stay in there for a long time because they will get big. So it’s just a recommendation but I think that you should have have tanks ready for them once they get bigger.
