- Two Phone interviews done the evening of Phil Lynott's death on 1/4/1986. Scott Gorham and Brian Downey both answer some questions about their experiences with Phil. The thing that struck me most is how surprised they were that Phil died...in Downey's case, almost to the point of aloofness. Very sad to listen to.
*The pictures (except for the very last one) were given to me by "lynottfan4". He was fornunate enough to see Lynott when he was in Grand Slam at a small pub and get some pictures, and kind enough to pass them on to me. I thought this video would be a good time to use them.
Enjoy!
I WISH HE NEVER DIED; MISS YOU PHIL!!!!
R.I.P Phil, a truly great Irish artist.
Thanks for all the inspiration...R.I.P. Phil you are sorely missed
you are more than welcome mate, you have done more for lynott fans on here than anyone else. If I had one wish, it would be to go back again and see it all again. All I need is just one wish !
Remeber the night like it was yesterday. Friday night rock show on bbc radio one had a special night for Phil and I recorded it on tape. Still got it. Whole band were interviewed. My hero. The King died that night. Still Out Here xxxxxxx
I was 4 going on 5 when this happened, I can for whatever reason recall hearing about this. All these years later Im a drummer and doing my thing, From one Irishman to another, thanks Phil for the music.
This is just brutal to listen to. Hearing how upset Brian Downey was is just heartbreaking. I hate the fact that I can never see or meet Phil, but I am kind of glad that I was introduced to Thin Lizzy with Phil already being dead. If I was alive and loved Thin Lizzy as much as I do now when Phil died, I might have broken down.
Lynott and Downey had been friends since they were kids. It must of been so hard for him. Lynott did herion, he injected in between his toes to hide it. I can't imagine how hard it would of been for Phil, he lost his wife, then his band.
I can understand his confusion. A lot of recordings on tape have a tendency to 'speed up' slightly when they age. Hence, the higher pitch of Scott's voice. But, anyone who has listened to Scott over the many, many years... knows full well that is his voice on the phone. Poor Brian. I don't think I would have been able to answer the phone much less do an interview at a time like that. Very sad...
He was indeed crying; at least the guy who I received this from said he was, and I tend to agree with him. Sounded choked up to me.
Scott and Brian are making it seem like Phil was healthy right before he died. It was a good idea to do that, but it's since been told that he was a mess. My favorite rocker. I wanna talk to him.
Well then feel free to post yours. If it's better I'll be happy to take this one down.
This is a recording from a cassette tape 22 years ago of a guy talking on a telephone. Sorry it's not Dolby 5.1 surround sound. Let's keep that in mind.
Thin Lizzy have been my fav band for the last 40 years since 79 when I was 12years of age . I was lucky enough to see them with snowy then Sykesy who was Awesome. Phil was larger than life and his death was a tragedy R I P Phil u were the Greatest!!!!!
I saw them with Snowy and John too and I'm a Supporter since 1978
That's exactly why I posted it. It's amazing how their recollections have changed over time.
Still profoundly missed...
Dear heart, I wish you could see.
Dear heart, you mean the world to me.
We miss you Philo.
Never to be forgotten ❤
wish ide seen them live they were one of the best bands ever .
The interviewers Leo Enright and Dave fanning also sound a little high so this would suggest that the tape is playing a little fast
I also find it odd that both Gorham and Downey would be in denial, but I suppose it was the day that Phil died they would be the last people to start a controversey and give tabloids fodder to exploit. While I would agree that perhaps Philo had maybe given up heroin his body was shutting down due the years of indulgence and neglect
RIP Philo

But 4/1/86, where I'm from, is April 1.
Anyone watching this video most likely knows when Lynott died. The date format is pretty insignificant. Besides, I can't change it on the actual video anyway, as I'd have to post a completely new video.
But he was Irish and died in England. The date stamp should be in the format that recognises that.
He didn’t die in the U.S.
@@markporter1901 You're commenting on something from 10 years ago, that I already explained 10 years ago.
And it's still not going to change now. It doesn't matter where he died. I'm an American and that's how I write dates. Just because it's not YOUR preferred format, doesn't mean it's wrong.
Get over it.
I was 13, I remember that night.
You were an original like Elvis hope your with him kid.
It sounds exactly like him. What are you on?
His feet were purple from shooting up. Not sure why BD says this.
Dave Fannings balls have dropped since this interview!
I know right .... lol
Theres rock bands ....and then there is rock bands that had soul ....and lizzy was full of it ..phil could do a ballad with the best of them...as well as being if not the best rock front man hes defo even with them all...lemmy ..bon scott.. to me there all legends and all great in different ways ... them 70s bands are untouchable..give me lizzy .dc..and motorhead every day and that is fine by me..
No Phil was not in a good state of health ,he was a total mess after all the documentaries I have seen since. However there are few with this amount of talent and charisma. Still my fave band to this day! Brian Downey sounds shaken quite literally. It's awful to interview bandmembers so soon after a death of their friend.
Love all your work BSF but can you adjust the date ,You have the date 1/4/86,,We here in Ireland and all of Europe take that as the 1st of April ,which is not the date Phil passed away ,,,,it would be greta if you could adjust it to read 4/1/86,,
thx
I find it funny that dave fanning referred to sid vicious as so and so. They definitely wanted to keep the drugs thing quiet.
We all knew time was running out
How can you say Downy is being aloof when he is obviously shocked and upset. You can hear it in his voice. Ridiculous assessment. They grew up together FFS
yea, also some people like to take the date as it appears, 1/4, meaning jan 4, why should it be read backwards?? if the 1 comes before the 4 then ..... its JANUARY 4TH.. DUH !!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is running 10% too fast. They all sound like chipmunks.
Alan L
I take whatever your on man.
:'(
Stupid journalists. Too soon!! Leave them alone for a bit, it only just happened, god damn! RIP Phil Lynott, the Renegade. ;'(
My god…. lie-not. It isn’t Lin not
why do dates appear backwards in ireland or europe ?? not to offend anybody , but if a date appears as 1/4/86... why read it as anything other than jan 4 86 ?? why should the second number be read first?? i dont get it. call me crazy or american, but it just makes sense that it be read IN THE ORDER ITS PRINTED
Alan L. coz that's how we do it in England!! end of!!
i could say the same to you!
