Yes, because a DIAC will allow for both polarity events so it is fully ‘ac’ both polarity.

Just like the dimmer on my nightlight. I opened it and wondered why the 'transistor' didn't get hot despite operating some complex switching on high mains voltage. It turned out that it's a thyristor, thanks to your explanation.
