    Parnelli Jones is one of the most iconic American racing drivers of all time, and when driving his Bud Moore - prepped Trans Am Mustangs was positively dominant in the 1969 and 1970 seasons. This is one of those Mustangs. Campaigned for four races in 1970, this Ford Mustang Boss 302 Trans Am makes 540 horsepower from a Moore-built 5.0L engine. It has a four-speed transmission, no power steering, and very wide vintage slick tires. It is worth well over a million dollars, and I got to do a 20 minute session on Thunderhill East, a big, fast, flowing circuit in Northern Calfornia.

    It was fun watching Matt driving the 15 car. That car was the one that was "tested" in the Daytona Grand Am race in February 1969. That's why the car doesn't have the "Boss 302" stripes on it. I talked to the guys that restored it told me. When I started working for Bud it was in May, 1969 and the cars were in Trans Am trim. If you notice in the engine compartment the engine had a normal distributor instead of the offset one that we used on the Trans Am setup. They said that they would get one but apparently they just left it like it is. Our redline for the engines was 6500 rpm not 9000!! In those days you would be picking up pieces of engine!! Thanks again Matt for the video.

    “…Oh and George Follmer won a bunch of races on top of that…”?
    Do you think you sort of undersold Follmer’s accomplishments after detailing Jones’?
    Follmer drove Indy, Formula 1, IROC, NASCAR and was the ‘72 Can-Am AND Trans-Am champion - The only driver ever to do that in the same year. He even came back out of retirement to race in the 24hrs of Le Mans in ’86 where the team took 3rd in a Porsche 956 .
    Yep - that was a “bunch”.

    • @jeffgarcia9773
      @jeffgarcia9773 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Man I was hoping someone would ask so I could answer this. Its called Zolotone. It’s a spray application coating that stems from the marine industry. It was what many of the teams used in period including the mustard Bud Moore/Ford factory Mustangs. My grandpa has it on his period Trans-Am style ‘69 Mustang track car also. Its the look you want 100%!

    • @papapetad
      @papapetad 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jeffgarcia9773 Thanks for the info! It looked like it would have some nice insulation properties as well as being a resilient surface finish kind of like underbody spray and the spots add a pleasant touch. I'm all about gettting rid of interior plastics and dirt/dust trap carpets in favor of simpler solutions that allow easy access to wiring and structure while still having some level of panel vibration damping so that stuff got my attention right away. Looks super easy to clean too. I'll look it up now. Peace
