This video is the most excellent video I have ever seen, and the man in this video, who is in fact a stranger to me, has thoroughly convinced me to spend all of my money at Organic Priced Books. Steve Ditko created Spider-Man.

    Fantastic review and overview.
A friend of mine bought this and I saw it.. had to get it. Beautiful.
I found it for a great price (kayfabe effect will/is strong with this) and can’t wait for delivery.
I was lucky enough to meet Jaime at a comic con in England a few months ago, an absolute gent and he talked to you with humility and warmth. I cheekily asked if he’d draw me a quick Maggie (with no expectations he would) and lo and behold, he did in a book of L and R’s covers I’d bought along. Very very lucky!

Jaime is the sharper cartoonist, but there's something about Gilbert's storytelling I love. Loved seeing the overview of this beautiful set!

Thanks, Rick! And I agree! Jaime's art is second to none in terms of today's cartoonists! And Gilbert's stories are literary masterpieces!

Is it shipped with its own custom cardboard box, Artist Editions (or Marvel box sets) like? I've noticed it is not even factory shrinkwrapped.

Great video, Taylor! Just wondering if you had any idea what’s contained in these hardcovers? (Copied from Wikipedia)
    --
    Hardcovers
Edited segments of both the Palomar and the Maggie stories are available in hardcover format.
Locas: The Maggie and Hopey Stories by Jaime Hernandez (2004)
Locas II: Maggie, Hopey, and Ray by Jaime Hernandez (2009)
Palomar: The Heartbreak Soup Stories by Gilbert Hernandez (2003)
    Luba by Gilbert Hernandez (2009)

Those are the oversized hardcovers they released a long time ago. I have never seen one, but I think it is similar to the paperbacks I show off in the video. They are pieced together kind of in order with the main stories.

Can I suggest a simple equivalency? This new box set is equivalent to the L&R Library Series, Vols. 1-7 (thru Amor Y Cohetes). Except that it presents the stories in their original hyper-serialized form, unaltered and unexpanded. Plus, it includes a volume of bonus material (essays, interviews, comics, etc.).
I found the Hellboy comparison confusing, as for the most part, the Library Series is chronological according to original publication. It collects the same material but is separated by author (and character arc) and sometimes expanded. An obvious exception is Amor Y Cohetes, which collects stray stories that don't belong to each author's main character set (and Mario's stuff) and leans towards earlier material.
I started with L&R via the New Stories issues (2008-2016) and consider it no small thing to be able to read the Brothers’ stories side by side against each other. This box set makes that possible for those early storylines.

Sorry for tagging you on a comment from three months ago, but does this in fact contain the Amor y Cohetes stories? I am looking to collect the series starting with this set and I'm wondering if I need that volume separately or not. Fantagraphics describes it as stories that did not fit in the first 50 issues so does this (first fifty) box set include those stories? Sorry for the confusing question.

    • @groove2519
      @groove2519 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@CandyColorClown Yes! Amor Y Cohetes collects stories from the first 50 issues that didn't fit obviously within each artist's main continuity-Palomar for Gilbert, Locas (Maggie and Hopey) for Jaime. This includes much of Gilbert's early work (BEM, Music for Monsters, Errata Stigmata), Jaime's Rocky series, and Mario's stories. It also includes some good stuff from near the end, when they were goofing around a bit (Hernandez Satyricon, My Love Book). The First Fifty should cover all of this and is probably a better way to read it. (It's possible that Amor Y Cohetes may contain a page or two pulled from different sources, but nothing major, if at all.) A parallel but different collection is the Hernandez Satyricon trade paperback; this includes more rarities and obscurities but nothing essential. I guess I could expand upon my previous comment in regards to Beyond Palomar (Poison River and L&R X). Gilbert became increasingly prone to revising his work for graphic novel release, and Poison River in particular was heavily reworked, in a good way. The value of The First Fifty is being able to see it in its original form, but you're not getting the final word on that story, which is one of Gilbert's best.
Don't forget your public library as a source for the L&R Library series. If they don't have the series, request it!

@@groove2519 Thank you for the prompt and detailed response! You are clearly an authoritative L&R expert! Fantagraphics needs to update their "how to read" blog to include this box set.
