"Ondine" (from "Gaspard de la Nuit")
    Orchestration Marius Constant

    conducted by Laurent Petitgirard.
    Seoul Art Center
Ondine is probably between the 3 pieces from Gaspar de la Nuit the closest to Ravel's orchestration.

I heard this piece on the piano a lot of times but this one is life-changing. I never heard something that beautiful in my life so far.

This is so incredibly beautiful thank you for posting this, when I first heard this piece on piano it seemed i couldn’t find a performance of the piece that felt right because of the difficulty of the twinkling high notes. This gives me that feeling of awe that is so apparent in the piece. Would love to have a recording of it if there is one!

Thank you, Marius Constant did a beautiful orchestration. You may hear the complete 3 parts Ondine-Le Gibet - Scarbo on the Playlist "Orchestre Symphonic Français videos", as we did record it in 1992. Scarbo is an incredible virtuoso piece for orchestras.

Wow! I know for a fact that Ravel never orchestrated his own piano masterpiece. But whoever did this did a marvelous job. It sounds so completely and authentically Ravelian, it really captures the essence of what is in fact an extremely pianistic work yet sounds absolutely convincing as an orchestral tone poem. Bravo!!

Did Ravel write this orchestration? Or is the arrangement by someone else? Both this and the piano are stunning. But imagine on orchestra doing Le Gibet and Scarbo too!

No Ravel did not orchestrate Gaspard de la Nuit, it seems that he berlieved that Scarbo was really mad to transpose for orchestra. It is a great french composer born in Roumania, Marius Constant who did it in 1989. He was a friend of mine and as he wanted this orchestration to be premiered by a composer-conductor, he asked me to do it. "Ondine" sound as a real Ravel orchestration, "Le Gibet" is already quite different and "Scarbo" is in another world but this is quite easy to understand. This movement is really crazzy for orchestras, I conducted it with many orchestras in Europe, United States and Asia, always with a great pleasure.

@@Petitgirard1 Hmmm I always thought that Ravel himself didn't orchestrate Gaspard because he thought the work was too "pianistic" and wouldn't work that well as an orchestral piece. The ending of Daphnis et Chloe is just as mad as Scrabo so I don't think that was his problem. I think he viewed Gaspard as his virtuosic showpiece, kind of like a Piano Sonata. That being said, I think Marius Constant did a marvelous job at orchestrating the work, and I listen to this version very often.

@@Sphereal I understand and I probably agree, this orchestral version is just another way to receive this fantastic music. Marius Constant did not pretend to do better, just to give other perspectives. In Ondine and Le Gibet it works perfectly. For Scarbo, extremly difficult for the orchestras, you will always be behind the piano virtuosity and precision.
