  • Traditional crafts such as basketmaking with willow and hazel need their champions to stay alive - and Rachel Evans is one of the UK's leading makers.
Meet the Maker is delighted to publish this video of Rachel's work: she shares her story, her inspirations and her dedication to using naturally sourced and sustainable local materials in her makings.
Rachel grows her own willow, over twenty varieties - harvesting and drying it before handcrafting it into an amazing array of different basket types. From traditional bushels and modern rucksacks, she also is one of a select few makers who can still create baskets for cockles - an art that almost died out.
If you are interested in seeing more of her finished work, catch her at one of the Peak District Artisans events, or other exhibitions throughout the North of England and the Midlands. Check out her website to order baskets - or discuss with Rachel a bespoke design! She also teaches basketmaking, and you'll find the details on her website.
Follow Rachel on Instagram @wheatcroftwillow and help keep this traditional craft alive. In a world of plastic, it has never been more important to value what can be created from the natural world that has provided for us, for thousands of years.

What a fascinating craft! And a labour of love. To grow your own willows and go hunting for hazel sticks in the woods is something from another age, and obviously hugely satisfying. I can see it becomes almost meditative through repetition of the same movements, and the focus it calls for, and which very effectively excludes other demands. And who knew Autumn now doesn’t end until December, and spring starts in February…. ?For any global warming doubters, this is the proof you might believe. I just hope Rachel can gather enough willows in these two short months of winter to keep weaving her magic. I especially loved the cockle baskets!👏 thanks for inviting us into your world!
