Ive got to get spraying, but cant get excited about that I really dont want to do it twice. The hay seems to be ok so far, cut 25+ ac today. I hope you get the rain I saw on the radar👍
Yeah dry here also. Last Sunday weather man said 100 percent rain with down pours. We didn’t get enough to settle the dust. A heavy dew would have been better. It’s been over 7 weeks since we had any measurable amount. Crop farming is bad but dairy needing to crops to feed is worse. Decent hay alfalfa - orchard mixed is 10 or better for small bales and straw is 6 or better for wheat straw. I believe everything is going to get worse before better.

One farmer to another - You need regenerative farming practices to build your soil’s ability to hold moisture. In the near-term, you should use a sprayer to coat your plants with compost tea. Just swirl some healthy compost in water until the water turns brown or black, filter the water through a paint strainer bag, or row cover, so you’re only left with the brown water, then spray the leaves in the very early morning. The stomata on the leaves are at their most open and able to absorb moisture at 5-10x the rate of hotter times of the day. This will not solve all of your problems since there will still be no moisture at the root zone, but it will help the plants survive and generate activity from the microbes on the compost. When they do get rain, they will be in a better position to grow. Longer term, you could also use lower tillage practices to build up your soil health. That soil looks like dust, and it has no ability to retain moisture around the root zone. Heavy tillage 1) tears apart healthy soil fungi that group soil particles together that help retain moisture during dry spells, and 2) busts up soil aggregates - clumps of soil that retain organic matter and moisture -the lack of which turns your soil into not much more than sand over time, as you’re experiencing. 3) Tillage introduces oxygen and inverts your soil layers so your best soil at the top is being moved below the surface and your worst soil at the bottom is being brought to the top, and the oxygen kills many of the microbes that do exist, which are what breaks down the nutrients in your soil to make them plant available. You could also try intercropping a cover crop such as oats and peas between your rows of corn. Those root systems will grow around your corn without competing directly with them. In fact, they’ll be fixing nitrogen and organic matter into your soil, while also helping to retain hundreds of gallons of water around their root zones, which your corn will be able to feed on in dry spells. If you’re reliant on consistent rain with soil that can’t retain it, you need to adjust how you do things, or else this is guaranteed to continue happening. Best of luck to you.
