    You are so genuine and helpful. Thank you so much. I’m a 70 year old Mimaw that has only been gardening about 4 years, so these videos are a tremendous help. Because of the Coronavirus, my age and health, my family didn’t want me to go out to the nurseries. I was late trying to get my transplants so when I ran to the nursery in March right before lockdown I didn’t pay attention and only got home with one indeterminate and the other five determinate. But, better than none. I’ve learned a lot from your videos. I will definitely try to use my suckers. God bless you and you sweet family.❤️🍅

    Jess, I was amazed when I accidentally broke my spaghetti squash seedling in half (it was 5 inches long) and I almost threw it away but instead, put it in water and it rooted!!! It's now in soil and growing rapidly... 10 inches and has buds :)

    Hi Jess! I have had some decent success starting tomato suckers. I totally agree, keeping the soil completely moist is super important or the sucker will wilt and be done. Partial shade helps with the stress as well. We have a shorter season here in NE Wyoming (last frost is June 1-10 depending on location), so starting suckers and getting a harvest is a complete gamble. It’s fun to try! ~ Nicole 🌻

    We had a tornado come through and snap a bunch of our big tomato branches. They had most of the fruits, so we mixed some rooting hormone into a vase of water. They rooted like crazy in a week. It was amazing to watch. I wish I had set up a camera for a time-lapse.

    Per your recommendation, I ordered seeds from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds. I ordered Danvers and Purple Dragon Carrots,French Breakfast and Zlata Radish and Ruby Queen Beets. They sent me Ragged Jack Kale seeds free! I am super excited to grow them all here in Warren Michigan, just outside Detroit. Zone 5B. Also I purchased a bunch of Zinnia and Marigold and Cosmos seeds like 10 years ago and found the packs recently. I was unsure if the would germinate after so long a time. I checked the beds today and amazingly they are sprouting Yahoo. I will keep you posted . I love your Vlogs. Thank you!!

    Love learning from you, Jess. You are so knowledgeable about so many plants and animals. I had a Nubian goat that had triplets. We were so surprised. It was our first goat, but I moved to the Virgin Islands and had to leave my goats behind. They do have a saying down there because they don't have a lot of room for cattle, but they do have goats. The saying goes, "They can't get your goat if they don't know where it's tied". I actually bought a couple of our boys tee-shirts with that on them. I am trying to propagate some tomatoes but I don't think they are going to grow. I put them in water. Next time I may try starting them in soil. This is the first time I have ever had the variety of plants that I have now. You have been my inspiration. My husband was always the gardener. I told him he could plant a broom stick and it would grow. Love your VLOGs.

    My other half and I watch your videos all the time. I was hoping I could share with you a surefire way that I found. Using a base of some loamy soil, wet peat moss or wet coco coir, in your 4 inch pot (to prevent leaking of the vermiculite), you add fine Vermiculite to the pot up to the top(or crush the coarse Vermiculite in your hands a little bit beforehand) and then you just stick them as deep as you can, trimmed to three main leaves, and then add water. They will have root balls the size of the pot in 1-2 weeks and they dont have to be watered as much, maybe 4 times for 2 weeks if they are in partial shade, also when planted if you break the soil up and pull them out wet, you dont really have to water them in much.(The roots cling to the Vermiculite). Vermiculite is actually sterile naturally For those "touchy tomatoes", because its heated biotite or phlogopite and becomes the fluffy light material it is. If you don't use vermiculite in your garden it very much has a place especially for tomatoes since its clean and they tend to be sensitive to bacteria. Sorry for the long post, i really hope you see this comment and try it out. You wont be disappointed :)
    P.s. in order not to top it on accident always look further up on what you think is the lead and if it has flowers on that main stem its your lead. 100% of the time.Thanks for the videos and tips :D

    i have never had a problem rooting clones from determinate plants, or from plants that had started flowering, however, i don't cut the stems that have flowers on them. I do take small suckers from large suckers and root them without problems. I have found that rainwater or well water works better than using tap water (at least for me).

    towards the end of the season I actually try and grab some and put them in water and the best ones that route I plant them in a pot and grow them all winter long in my window.I don't get as many or as big but it's a nice plant and I love the smell of tomatoes.

    • @taramullins1445
      @taramullins1445 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I never actually thought about the indeterminate and determinate when it came to Winter. I will definitely be looking into indeterminate plants for this winter. I have cut just about any part of a tomato plant with flowers or fruit it doesn't matter. I put it in water and it gets route and it grows. And then I just replanted or give it to somebody else to replant. Although when it does have fruit on it, I will grab a tiny handful of the dirt from the plant that it's growing in and drop it in the bottom of the water. It seems to help do the trick of fertilizing with natural nutrients that the plant was already growing off of. But literally a tiny little handful.

    Just in case anyone was curious, I just tried it myself and you can grow suckers that have pretty much just sprouted! I'm talking like the length of half a thumb. I was pruning my tomato plants after transferring deep into the soil to get the stem rooting and decided to see if I could save all the suckers I removed.
    They started out very slow. Probably about 3 weeks before I could see them visibly increasing in size, but sure enough, they are now growing :) Now I've turned my 3 gifted tomato plants into 10! Of course, there's still a chance they could die for whatever reason but they are growing and have doubled in original size. I didn't even root them either, just stuck em straight in the potting soil and trimmed back the foliage to only a couple of leaves.
    The thing is, you MUST keep the soil visibly moist for the first two weeks pretty much. If you're going to leave them outside, make sure they only get about 1-2 hours direct sun at the most. I live in a climate zone 10 and I forgot to water one of them for 1 day while out in the sun, and the top layer of soiled dried up, taking my sucker with it. thankfully it's the only one lost so far and the rest and doing great.
    Thanks so much, I wouldn't have even tried this if not for this video! :)

    The tomatoes do root quite easily. With anything you want to root, add a piece of ivy, philodendron, or some other plant. There's something about the hormones that helps it root easier and faster. My sucker rooted in 4 days! Take some leaves off like Jess did, if you think the plant can't support that much. Certainly don't leave on any blossoms.

  • @schex9
    @schex9 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The problem with rooting suckers in Louisiana in May is that by the time those little plant have flowers, it will be too hot for those flowers to pollinate. I have one sucker that I pulled off in April and stuck in the raised bed. I will let you know if it ever makes a tomato.
    In our Master Gardener class, we were told that rooting anything in water develops roots that are too fine to make a strong plant. It's better to propagate in soil. With more difficult plants, trim leaves from four nodes and bury two nodes in the soil. Mist twice a day.

    I am watching this because I paid $7.00 for one tomato plant that gives black cherry tomatoes. I bought it last year and it is still alive and I want to make more plants of it because I probably won't find this plant again in the nursery. Sometimes you see as particular plant and then don't see it again for 10 years.

  • @straubdavid9
    @straubdavid9 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I grow mostly indeterminate type tomatoes, and try to keep them single stem. Sometimes some suckers get away on me and I may end up letting them grow. It's VERY hard to cut off suckers that have flowers ~8^) The idea is to get them early, so you don't have to make that decision, plus your plant would not have had to expend energy to grow some thing you are going to remove anyway. One thing that I do with indeterminate suckers is leave the one at the top until the plant produces the next sucker. If something happens to the main stem, you will have that sucker to keep the plant growing upward. Just a little insurance policy that I practice after having some main stems quit growing for some reason .....like a tomato hornworm munches it off! Take care.

  • @ElderandOakFarm

    You should do a side by side trial using a sucker that's about 1.5-2 inches tall & then a sucker that is about 3-4 inches tall. I was told in a video (dont remember which gardening channel it was) its actually easier to clone a tomato plant when its smaller. Also, it'd be nice for you to show us the soil befor and after watering the ones you clonebecause i have cloned quite a few successfully, but I'm always afriad im over watering & going to cause them to rotm
    *just heard you say you do them in water. Lol

    I love your top.
    I have never pruned my tomatoes. I have never hardened any plants. Does this work with tomato cages?
    So, by taking the suckers off and planting them you can save lots of money and even give to someone.
    You are amazing. Is it better to just get poles and tie my tomatoes to them. Or use cages ?
    Thank you for being a part of my life

    So I tried cutting the bigger suckers to grow. One of them left an open wound. I was worried about disease or whatever, so I put Neosporin on it. Lol I hope it helps.

    Hi Jess. So when would you plant these in your zone? I am close to you so I'm wondering if I do this right now, when would I put them into the ground. ?????

    This question is a bit of a tangent, but my husband and I are attempting a trellis arch with 16ft cattle panel and t-posts after watching one of your videos. We were curious of the length of panel you used for your arches and more importantly, what height t-posts did you use (e.g. 5', 6', etc) or does it not matter? Thank you for your informative videos which are really helpful while we try out hand at gardening for the first time.

    I actually decapitate my tomatoes pretty ruthlessly early in the season. If I only need one new plant I in stead of taking the sucker just chop a good amount (10 inches maybe?) of the top of the plant off just above a sucker. That sucker will grow like crazy (because it already has the root system of the entire plant) and the plant will be big again in a few days. Additionally I have a big "cutting" and get a big extra tomato plant instantly. I've never noticed that it would make the original plant shorter either. Maybe I've been lucky. 😛

    Jess How do you know what plants are where? Do you have them labeled or just remember? Thanks!

    Thank you for your practical ideas and great explanations.
    Is that potting soil already wet before placing the sucker in for rooting?

    I'd love to know where your pruners/scissors came from. Are they bonsai snips?

    Do you use Roma tomatoes? If not, what kind do you like for salsa's, sauces, etc?
