Regarding VAT, I'm a chartered accountant (albeit retired) and can confirm that the margin scheme on second hand goods works as you describe. However, it's not compulsory for sellers to use it and it involves a lot of very detailed record keeping (including getting very specific invoices from the people who sell to the retailer) which some retailers may feel is just not worth the hassle. If the scheme is used then the invoice that you as a purchaser would receive wouldn't disclose the amount of VAT as this would enable you to work out the seller's profit margin. It will be interesting to see how Hattons eventually responds.

The hassle for Hattons simply isn't worth it.
It would require loads of detailed record keeping AND loads of ridiculous government paperwork to justify the reduced VAT.
@@WhatAboutTheBee I worry there is hassle, and there is a smattering of rip-off/profiteering.
From my limited experience of selling to retailers they more often buy job lots, sadly mostly estate sales, so they would have to calculate a value for each item themselves which would be time consuming if your taking in large collections.
@@tonywise198 Hi Tony, the juice isn't worth the squeeze. The cost to Hattons is the staff to administer the program, but where is the return on investment? The excess VAT goes to the government, not to Hattons.
So in exchange for administering an expensive program, Hattons gets £0 ROI.
That's an easy call for any executive
