In 1988, 5000 people were executed by the order of Ayatollah Khomeini
The late President Raisi was a judge at the time
95% of those executed were members of the terrorist group Mujahedin-e Khalq Organisation (MKO), basically Iranians who had allied themselves with Saddam's Baathist army in the Iran-Iraq war
The rest belonged to communist organisations such as the Tudeh Party of Iran and the Iranian People's Fedaian Organisation (Majority), which were aligned with the Soviet Union
Today, all three organisations have taken refuge in the West, with the MKO still active and with large bases in Europe and the US
