I have to admit that a few weeks ago I had an issue with my cole jaws and a single plate donut chuck that I had on the cole jaws. I was finishing the bottom of a bowl and finish turned it at about 850 but then had a brain spasm when it came time to apply the finnish. Cranked it up to 1800 like "I always do for a friction polish" (but not with the cole jaws or a donut chuck). The lathe spooled up slowly and then took off, I had enough time to duck then , BANG, the plywood exploded into four pieces - luckily I got out of the way and no one got hurt. The bowl survived with minor scuffs (hard maple) but my pride took a big hit...

Great job Gord, but why did you sand the edge when you were going to turn the edge on the lathe anyway. I would cut it out close and turn the jaws and end up where you did I would think. What am I missing? Thanks again Larry
Larry C I had not intended to turn the edge on the lathe but my angles were out by about 1 or 2 degrees and I ended up with the outside less than perfect. The only way to correct that was to turn it. If I had done the four wedges perfectly I wouldn't have needed to turn it. Just one more instance of not being as good as I wish I was. :-) I have yet to make a video where I didn't have to correct something. Oh well, learn something new with every one. Thanks for the video. Well done! Just curious about wood selection. How would you feel about making the extensions with MDF? All in all do you feel safer with plywood? I have used both and have had success with mdf also. Thanks, David
David Christian David, I do feel safer with plywood. Due to the alternating direction of the plies I believe it is very strong. I don't have much faith in MDF for this type of application. I don't claim to have a lot of information about its strength for this type of work and could be wrong. I just prefer to go with plywood because I KNOW it's strong. I realize the inside will be backwards, That is the problem to solve? my thought is to cut a 1/16 deep area on the inside where the K s are upside down and inlay that area. Thanks
I think that would work but might be difficult to achieve. Another idea that would also be difficult, probably more difficult would be to glue two segments back to back so you have a K on the outside and a reverse image on the inside which would be correct when looked at on the inside. I have never tried it and I think the difficulty would be turning it and not going through one side or the other. That would take some serious planning, I believe. Does that make sense to you, Jeff?

Hi John, That is a 6" Incra T-Rule. They are available in 12" & 18" as well. It's a very useful tool that I use very often. I got mine from Lee Valley Tools but it is available from most woodworking tool suppliers.

Why not true up all the work on the lathe instead trying to sand to a line. You have a great tool (lathe) to true up the original piece and the extra ring piece. Any way, each to his own way of doing things, just did not understand dong things the hard way and once ( sanding the first four pcs and then turning them on the lathe) doing the same thing twice. Other than that you do great work and you are very educational. Thanks.

I'm hoping that when I show how I do something it will cause viewers to think about ways to alter my methods and find better ways or methods that they would prefer. Gord, great tutorial, but turning plywood at 2x max speed for that diameter (16,800) is really dangerous regardless of your confidence. You could have turned the profile at a much lower speed with the same results. You encourage safety, but don't practice it well.

I do not encourage others to do what I'm doing but to make their own decisions as to what is safe or not safe. If I should have an accident doing this I will have nobody to blame but myself.
