In Alaska there was a native tribe that built small colorfull little houses over their graves. The homes were for their souls. They were called Spirit House. Several American Indian tribes built these houses also.
Never in my life have I ever heard of building a house well a shelter around graves.I am learning things everyday in my old age. God Bless Sir and be safe.
What’s the difference between this structure and a mausoleum? They are both enclosed structure with the only difference is one holds the dead above while this holds the dead below ground.
First time I had ever heard of such a place! Wish you would have shown us the historical marker in front so we could have read it. Good job in finding these odd and interesting places.
I'm an archaeologist in Mexico, so this was extremely cool to me. I was originally from the United States , but the west coast. Never heard of this before so I'm really glad you did this video. Thanks so much and tell your dad hello for me!
This is a new one for me and I am 73. I grew up in Arkansas and now live in Southern Missouri but I have never even heard of a house/shelter built to cover graves. Very interesting! You just gained a sub. I am hooked now and have to see what other kinds of interesting and unusual places you find! 😂
As the grandson and great grandson of undertakers, I find the idea of uncovering local history through the cemetary, is a fantastic idea!!!! I hope some history teachers are watching!!!
That is definitely different. I have saw a video that was filmed in West Virginia where many of the graves had small roof 's over them. The guy that did it explained about them, but I can't remember what he said. I'm like Pops...old and tired...lol. Thanks for taking us along to see this. Hope you have a great week and God bless!
Thank you based Pinckney Hufstedtler for your architectural wonders, and your luminous smile ! You are an inspiration to some of us. I'm practicing my Pinckney Grin for my own waterproof grave. Rest in peace, you ornery man.
Thank you so much for doing this video I had never heard of a grave house, I wonder if the two graves outside were just friends of the family, looking forward to more of these sort of off the wall videos ,! Thanks 😊
I have seen the smaller grave shelters. This is the largest I've seen...quite unique I think. Different strokes for different folks, very interesting. So put Pops in his easy chair,I get tired, too. Watching from up in KY 😊 stay well.
It looks like someone added a metal roof, that doesn't look that old. I wonder why he didn't want his grave to get wet. I wonder if he knew that would mean no grass, or that within a few years it would be difficult to have visitors, etc. Did it say anything about who else, family members, was buried inside there?
They are common here in Eastern Ky , they often have chairs for the living to sit in to visit their loved ones , they have roofs over them to keep them dry and there homes for the families
I’m going with the idea that his first memories were of riding in a wagon pulled by oxen (as was common back then) as his parents traveled looking for a new home. At the end of his life he wanted to go out the same way
I live near this and never knew anything about it. There is a cool overgrown plantation cemetery in Hickman county called Graham Cemetery that has a huge statue marker that your audience would probably like to see. Brring a weed eater if u go
We have a small one built over 2 graves in a cemetery I serve on the board for. I was told that the family emigrated to SW Missouri, and along the way, the family was trying to cross the flooded Ohio River. They lost some family members to drowning. This couple wanted their graves to be covered by one of these structures so they wouldn't get wet. They were terrified of water. Thank you for sharing this story. I'm adding this to my list of places to go!
Interesting video. A little constructive criticism. There was more footage of you than the grave house. You didn’t even give us a look at the placard to read for ourselves what you did not tell us. 😢
Enjoyed this episode, enjoy genealogy, have visited lots of ole abandoned cemeteries around home, never seen or heard of these… thanks for sharing this!!
Ty for sharing this is awesome. Come on down to L.A. aka Lanett Alabama and visit lil Nadine at the dollhouse grave ..it's worth the trip & you can take the back roads...😊
In eastern Oklahoma one can find individual wooden huts over a gravesite. The local native Americans use this system to cover their loved ones. Over time one will find items placed in or around the grave, much like one will find flowers on top of graves. It is a bit different from what most people are used to but it shows just how much this group of Native Americans loved and cared for the deceased.
I know of A House in Wisconsin where the family ,has a house for the dead, when a family member dies ,they take them to this house ,dress them, set them up ,to the table,as tho they are still alive.for how many days ,I don't know.
Fascinating. Are there any ghost stories associated with this place?? I wonder why those two people got buried outside, and not inside, the gravehouse.
8 total graves wonder why only 2 are marked? Also curious who the lady named Margaret was, she had to be related. Wonder why she wasn't buried in the house? That's a neat video.
I am a Pevahouse from Perry County where Linden is. Notice my spelling, in studying my family there are 4 or 5 spellings of it. I have never heard of a grave house. My brother and I spent a lot of time in the woods and never found one.
As a funerary practice oxen-drawn funeral carts or wagons were used in ancient Egypt, Japan and China. Probably other places too. I’ve never seen a grave house that large.
Mausolium or crypt. In New Orleans all graves are above ground in shelters because the city is below sea level and people wint stay buried in the ground
I live in Louisiana and there is one cemetery that have small houses built (style of their house)over their graves. Sorry I don’t have a picture for everyone to see.
If you are heading into Fayetteville TN, coming south on Hwy 431 entering town, there was/is a cementary on the left hand side of the road. Several years ago, about 12-15 years ago, they built a house OVER the cementary. Headstones and all. I don't think they moved the bodies but don't hold me to that. I always found that very strange. Its a small white house and its still there.
Hey 👋 we love watching your videos and we are from a town 19 mins from Linden Tn ive never heard of this pretty cool 😎. You should do a video on my family they are famous in southern gospel music and Kenny Hinson and Larry Hinson the lead singer is buried where Conway Tweety is burried.
Thanks for this. In future, I suggest minimal to no video showing you talking. Your audience wants to see the structure, details of how it’s built, the landscape surrounding it and history of the family who built it. Just a tip. All the best.
hey man if you're ever in the area again, please get some d2 headstone cleaner and a soft nylon brush and clean the headstones. The spirits will be thankful
I have never seen anything like this before or even heard of someone doing this. I found this very interesting and I have seen a few of your videos in the past and didn’t realize I wasn’t subscribed to your channel but I am now. I have quite a few channels that I subscribe to that do the same thing as you. A few do only really old stuff like this. See you on the next one.
In Alaska

Same in Oklahoma..
Wow I guess I haven’t seen anything like that before. Sounds very interesting I love history I’m going to have to research this.
This is too funny I live here in Alaska but I have family in linden Tennessee where he's at
This is amazing I never even knew there was such a thing. Tfs
I think this is a great idea!
Never in my life have I ever heard of building a house well a shelter around graves.I am learning things everyday in my old age. God Bless Sir and be safe.
It would rather be buried, with a couple fruit trees over my grave. So my body can nourish the trees. And the fruit is used to feed those in need.
cremate me and make Dust in the Wind
Never heard of a hillbilly pyramid ... neither have I .... definitely strange
@@Paulftate same here

In Canada many of the first nations people, in particular the Cree built small houses over the graves of their loved ones.

me too, and I am 81.
This is quite touching, this care of these graves! Love takes many forms. ❤
veneration of the dead is real

Thank you so much for doing this video I had never heard of a grave house, I wonder if the two graves outside were just friends of the family, looking forward to more of these sort of off the wall videos ,! Thanks 😊
Seems to me, one would only go through this much trouble because they truly cared about & missed whoever was under that ground.
In eastern Kentucky I know where 2 graveyards are with tiny houses over graves, some have 7 or 8 graves in them
I have seen the smaller grave shelters. This is the largest I've seen...quite unique I think. Different strokes for different folks, very interesting. So put Pops in his easy chair,I get tired, too. Watching from up in KY 😊 stay well.
Very interesting, I live and grew up in Vermont never heard of a house/shelter covering a cemetery. Thank you for sharing

Wow , never heard of anything like that , I would love to know more about this family. Great video
Very interesting structure! Never heard of that before! Thanks for taking us along. Stay safe and God bless!
That was very interesting and a Great idea. I wouldn’t want my grave getting wet but I don’t like public mosuleums either
What a cool place. He did an amazing job. Must have taken him a long time to complete. 😊
Wow, I had no idea this even existed! Anything else that you know about that is weird or unusual? Take us to see it with you. This was great!😊❤
Not really strange and weird when compared to mausoleums. Its just a farmers style mausoleum.
What a cool find. Love it 👍🏻👏🏻
I live near this and never knew anything about it. There is a cool overgrown plantation cemetery in Hickman county called Graham Cemetery that has a huge statue marker that your audience would probably like to see. Brring a weed eater if u go

He was in no hurry to arrive. Oxen are so much slower than mules. :D

Here in Europe, I have never seen anything like this and didn't even know, things like "grave houses" even exist. Thanks!
Ive Never heard of a grave house. Th is is really interesting. Thank you. Love the beard.
For being that old it faired better than a stone mausoleum.
Enjoyed this episode, enjoy genealogy, have visited lots of ole abandoned cemeteries around home, never seen or heard of these… thanks for sharing this!!
It’s like a mausoleum. Pretty cool.
Pinkney's Tomb is about a 3 hour drive from me. May check that out when the weather warms up.
I love this, I am looking forward in seeing more , Take care, hugs to you and your Dad! Blessings to always!!
I guess this would be a historic Tennessee Mosaleum
I've never heard of this being buried in a house
Hey from nc
It really looks to be in fairly good condition.. The roof is pretty new..
I never heard of a grave house. awesome find , thanks for sharing as always
It's almost like a Tennessee tour!! Thanks !!
WOW that is something I never heard of but the man got what he wanted. Since I moved down here in Tn so many interesting stories. Thank you sir!
Awesome. I grew up I. Tennessee and I will have to see this place. I have been to many cemeteries and graves but this is definitely unusual.
An early rendition of a mausoleum...with burials underground. Kool!
Very cool! Thank you for sharing, I’ve never seen anything like this.
I really liked your video. Good voice for narrations. Perfect southern accent. ❤
Wow never thought of doing this but should have marked the grave. He’s the only one who knows who’s there. 🧐❤
In West Virginia there are many grave houses but they are singular and a few doubles..Very interesting !! Thanks for taking Us along ✌️🌹
He was devoted to his family in life and death. Impressive!
This is actually pretty cool. Thanks for sharing this! 😊
What a great idea ! Thank you for this.
Well ,they lived worked ,had children loved and passed on just like us ,hope they enjoyed their lives 😊😊
There are two upright markers inside, not one. It is well-cared for with stone wall repairs, a solid roof, and a mowed grass lot.
That's so fancy of a building . There sure did go all out .
wow it's like those prehistoric burial sites in Ireland and Scotland
Well That makes sense because alot of Irish and Scotts settled in the hills of the south... Love to go over there someday
Ty for sharing this is awesome. Come on down to L.A. aka Lanett Alabama and visit lil Nadine at the dollhouse grave ..it's worth the trip & you can take the back roads...😊
I got the chance to visit her last year. Really beautiful house. L.A. is great place to go visit
I'm thinking the grave house was the closest thing you could get to a mosaleum at the time. Very interesting. .

I don't know how I got on the graveyard side of TH-cam but I like it! This warms my dark little morbid soul.
Fascinating. Are there any ghost stories associated with this place?? I wonder why those two people got buried outside, and not inside, the gravehouse.

Good to see you!! Happy New Year!! Great video. 😊
Happy new year!
Had a Gx 4 Uncle who had a shelter built over his grave back when, very colorful character. Song and lore about him still.
I've seen also, singular grave roofs in the South.
- never seen one of these, Thanks for sharing this!
I have been watching your videos for several years and I really do look forward to when I do get to see your videos
I appreciate that! Those comments are always appreciated
I live in Louisiana and there is one cemetery that have small houses built (style of their house)over their graves. Sorry I don’t have a picture for everyone to see.
Just found the channel…excellent video with interesting info about America’s past!
According to 1870 census his land was valued at 9000 and personal effects valued at 2000
He didnt want the graves to get wet .
But there are openings that water can get in .
🤷♀️

I’ll see if I can find that. Thanks for the suggestion.
I went by it all the time and was so surprised they did that.
Thank you for sharing love your hat
I knew native people's sometimes built houses over Graves but didn't know about this place in Tennessee
If you could pause close up on plaques for a few moments, that would be appreciated. Thanks for sharing
Take a screen shot and look at later. 😊
Doesn't work if they don't zoom in as they stroll past the plaque
@@beckygrayson5077
He did put it on screen, if you pause the video you can read it easily.
His family may have traveled west in an ox drawn Conestoga wagon .😊
I hope to visit here since I live in Centerville. I wonder how faraway it is.

THIS IS SO BEAUTIFUL ❤❤❤
That is probably his grave that is marked. Interesting. Have not seen anything like that - kind of an early mausoleum.
woow. love to sew such mysterious places .❤
Thank you 🙏
Thank You For Sharing
A Good little tour😉
I have never seen anything like this before or even heard of someone doing this. I found this very interesting and I have seen a few of your videos in the past and didn’t realize I wasn’t subscribed to your channel but I am now. I have quite a few channels that I subscribe to that do the same thing as you. A few do only really old stuff like this.
See you on the next one.
This is a crypt.
Thanks for visiting
19th century variation on a mausoleum, cool.
My OCD was wondering why the door isn’t in the center of the building.
Very interesting place! I have actually been there.
Never heard of this before ever. First time visiting your channel. Hi from the uk. Interesting video ❤
Hello
