I went there about 25 years ago. It was a drive to Mt Rushmore and this was on the way. I have to say Devils Towers is much more impressive than Rushmore. The way it just comes up from the hilly plains is amazing. And the area around this is forests and beautiful red rocks. And when I went it was not crowded.
I agree. When I went to Mt Rushmore I thought, “well there’s that thing I’ve seen a million pictures of and it looks exactly the same. Guess I can leave now.”
You're welcome. Some of them won't be 100% precise. I had to do some guessing on a few of them. But they should surely get you close enough to where your eyes can take over. Happy hunting!
There must be hundreds more touched by the vision who never made it here simply because they never watch this youtube video. Or perhaps they watched it, but never made the psychic connection.
James - Thank you SO MUCH for this video, and your scouting work. I’m actually at Devil’s Tower NM, and one of the things that drew me here was my memory (could it be almost 50 years ago???) of loving CE3K as a kid. I vividly remember the scenes where Roy and Gillian are approaching the mountain, and then climbing the boulder field. And when I asked the Park Ranger if they had any information about CE3K shooting locations he said … none of the movie was actually filmed in Wyoming. It was all filmed in a studio “except for some B roll shots.” Wait … that couldn’t be right! Was my memory of those iconic “hero” shots of Devil’s Tower *so* wrong??? Well, after tracking down a few articles that seemed to indicate that NONE of the shots in CE3K were actually filmed on Devil’s Tower (just at the site of the current KOA) I came across your video. The detective work you did in tracking down the places actually used in the movie were wonderful balm to my recollections - I’m not crazy! (I think I might have heard Roy say that a time or two!) After seeing your video, I’ve enjoyed (respectfully) walking near the spots near the Monument main entrance (the turn out on the road) and the boulder field on the west side of Tower Trail, and reliving those iconic moments from the movie. Please know that in your love of this great ‘70s science fiction movie … you are not alone!
This comment really really made my day. Thank you so much. I love knowing that others share my enthusiasm for this movie and this location. Did you try to climb up to the boulder where I left the money and souvenir? To my knowledge, no one has found it yet.
Holy moly, my friend - that was AMAZING. I've been a fan of the movie since I was about 8 years old, and though I've never physically been to Devils Tower, I feel like I've just had a personal tour anyway. Loved it! Terrific work :)
James, to steady your tripod keep a canvas bag that you can put 5 pound rod in if and attach to bottom of tripod. This will steady equipment and after your done with rock simply put rock back where you found it.
Oh yes. I always travel around with six ankle weights to strap onto a tripod if needed. But this instance was on the fly and I was all the way up there before I expected that sudden gust. Live and learn. Gotta love the opportunity to include the mishap for some comedy though. 🤣
@@JamesGelet Yep, worked fine. Was even able to import it into a movie locations map I've assembled over the years. Will hopefully come into play if I make it back to Wyoming.
Appreciate you, Sam! I wish I had this video prepared when you were there a few months ago. Imagine my shock when I discovered the rock Dreyfuss was hiding under was the same exact one that he was climbing on in the previous shot. I had been looking for that for years.
Thank you so much. I enjoyed working on this and I look forward to trying this concept for a video again. All of my drone footage was shot from outside of the park. The one shot that is clearly inside the park was shot by another pilot before the National Parks Rule went into effect.
@@JamesGelet thank u for swift reply, and again AWESOME VIDEO!, ironically i had watched it bout two weeks ago, prolly hadn't seen it in 30 yrs, but remembered every seen, especially what u captured where the original stunning cinematography was set, thanks again James, i have yet to check your channel out, but definitely will and ill pass it on to others! Keep doing what your doing!, Die with memories not dreamz brother! 🇺🇸

Including a map is a sweet bonus. Thnx!
I'm so glad you're happy with that. So the link is working for you? (It's my first time adding that so I wasn't sure.)

Will definitely follow your guide if I ever go to Devil's Tower!
Please stay in touch and let me know how you did if you do.
Great video! The time and effort that u put into this is astounding! How are u allowed to use a drone there?
