It’s been my experience that women that are low in hormones need fat to help them make their hormones. I was a low fat vegan for two years and I did not get ride of my menopause belly. I worked out and again ate a whole food plant based diet. It just didn’t work for me. Every body is different and you just have to see what works. I believe with all the beans, legumes, whole grains and fruit I was eating, I was spiking insulin too much. Menopausal women are much more insulin sensitive so avoiding foods that spike insulin seem to be better for me.

Interesting and useful comment. What is your diet like now?
I agree with more fat. I love legumes and beans but they bloat me so bad so I've decided to let go.

I agree. I was whole foods plant based for 2.5 years and I lost strength, muscle mass, body composition changed and i felt bloated often. I also had terrible pms during that time and realized it was actually all of the tofu/soy I was eating. I also started developing rashes when eating soy after a while. Took out the soy, added pasture raised poultry and eggs, wild caught salmon and tuna as well as organic yogurt and have leaned out, blood work great and made my way back to getting those strength gains. My diet is still plant centered but the small amount of animal protein has really made a difference.

I have lost 35 pounds going grain free, very little sugar, lots of fats like that found in quality meats, bone broth, avocado, coconut oil and olive oil, and lots of greens, cilantro and vegies. No sodas, but lots of quality fruit juices and fresh fruit. No calorie counting. I am slow walking 1 to 3 miles a day. I have not felt this healthy in years and all bloodwork and bp is normal now.

I’m 52 and postmenopausal. I’m on HRT, full body resistance train regularly, walk my dog every day, avoid sugar and sugar substitutes and processed foods, I don’t drink any alcohol, I’m mindful of portions, and I meditate daily. However, my belly will not budge. I never had to think about my weight until I was in my late 40s. I am under a tremendous amount of stress thanks to an unavoidable family situation so I know my cortisol is through the roof and my sleep quality is terrible (I’m getting professional therapy help, but it’s not helping my belly). However, I don’t know what else to do to control it. Additionally, I’m only 5 feet tall, so every extra pound shows. It’s very depressing.

This is great. I am glad you've found what works for you. I found that eating a plant-based diet is kinder to my body in the long-term (eliminates inflammation etc), and is also a large part of my journey of expanding awareness in discovering how animal products are produced globally, and the effect of animal production and consumption on the environment. It's a big topic, and I will go into it in more detail in another video. And this is one of the many reasons why I personally don't advocate meat-heavy diets (be it Atkins, Paleo, or Keto).

    • @semprecantando
      @semprecantando 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Keto is most definitely not for everyone. I gained 30 lbs in a short period of time since I turned 40. I’ve always been able to shed unwanted pounds by exercising and eating healthier, but this time it didn’t work. I even tried keto for 3 months and I had ALL side effects (keto rash was the worse) and only lost 2 lbs. I started eating more plant based, low fat and lean meats and finally started seeing results, however small or slow they are. I also think Keto is not sustainable because it’s soooo restrictive. I truly believe though everyone should stick to what works for them. If Keto works for you than good for you, but I’m absolutely opposed to this constant push by so many as THE only diet that works. It is not!

truthseeker me too. Plant based made me way worse. I’m one of the ones who ate soy for peri menopause health and ended up destroying my thyroid. My joints began to hurt, I ended up having half my thyroid surgically removed and inflammation markers soared. I’ve never been a sugar fan. My belly fat soared.
Once I quit all legumes, all wheat, gluten & went on a low carb diet emphasizing meats, natural meat fats and loads of veggies I started to heal. Whenever I eat carbs in whole grains my tummy pops out. If I enjoy some beans or peanut butter I get joint pain again.
Some of us are very very sensitive to the lectins & phytates in legumes & grains.
Every other thing in the video I agree with. Just pointing out that for some of us, the plant based diet is a killer.
And for some of us, soy is a thyroid killer.
My endocrinologist said he is seeing a tidal wave of women who use soy to help menopause and end up killing their thyroid.

We should all make a committed and determined effort to break the silence that pervades such subjects and only perpetuates more stoic ignorance amongst our youth. Plus, even some who are now middle-aged and elder females today!!! The ridiculous stigmatisms of yesteryear must and should be outright vanquished from our mindsets. For we can only begin to resolve women's health issues if we ensure that ALL FEMALES receive the best, most accurate health information and healthcare available from here onward regardless of where they live or what income bracket they're categorized in; and nor the lack of healthcare facilities existent nearby them. I don’t have time or the energy to do what you are suggesting. This seems like a great plan for someone who doesn’t work and has more time in the day to do all this. This to me requires a lot of thought. You do look fantastic though.

It can be done. I know it's hard. I turn 52 this month and I have always worked really hard. Right now, I have a very intense job that requires a lot of mental resources AND I have a side consulting job. I can work up to 12 or more hours a day. You would think I would not have energy to workout & eat right - and you would not be wrong - but I do it anyway, and magically I have energy as a result. It literally keeps me sane. I get up early and walk w/ an Audible book. After my first job, I take an hour and workout in my very low budget home gym (Maxiclimber, resistance bands, free weights). After that, my 2nd job for a few hours. If I feel healthy and strong, I feel better equipped to handle whatever BS is coming my way.
It's very hard to get started. I won't lie. I fall off the wagon at times and there are times I really can't do it. I just recommit and get back up.
Here's what really kicks it home for me. My mom was put in a hospital at age 73 last month because she was caring for her husband and NOT herself. She said she had no time. I don't want to disagree, because I'm not in her shoes, but it was a lesson to me to always prioritize self-care, or you eventually you won't be able to care for anyone else.
Forgive my longwinded answer you did not ask for! Your comment sort of hit home. Best wishes to you.

Yes - I agree to LISTEN TO YOUR BODY, and when you get into the depths of what I teach, I customize as there isn't a one-size-fits all. The food that I promote (the way of eating) is all geared toward disease prevention. I look to the evidence based science on this. And have spent years studying the populations that boast the the greatest HEALTHspan and longevity on Earth - most of these populations eat a 95 - 98% plant-based diet. I have a video coming up all about what I eat to stay healthy, so stay tuned on that. Thanks for your comment.

Paleo is a good program to follow and true millions have & do benefit from it. Same success with Keto experienced by many others. And South Beach and Mediterranean and etc. etc. [whew, just tooooo many, lol 😄]. Yet, the most crucial factor that is FINALLY...FINALLY being paid any attention is that GENETICS, yes indeed, ones ancestral and direct genetic structure plays the most critical and most pivotal and sometimes the most precarious role as to which health program offers them the best results. And that is THE KEY FACTOR in determining what works best for ones body.
      Speaking of that,
Üforia Science has developed a such a line of customized product(s) named, ÜTRITION, that is based solely on ones genetic DNA that enables superb health according to the nutrients your specific DNA shows that your body needs to perform at its optimum best! Check it out on Facebook under its product name. And prepare to be amazed!

So I’m having some issues- due to a devastating disease I had a hysterectomy at 34. Beside being devastated and depressed I noticed I felt like someone took over body. I used to have a beautiful stomach and seems overnight everything changed :(. Had my hormones checked and am on HRT . So all of that is ok now, but I’m battling this new belly and fat issues (amongst other things) no one I know is so young around me that understands. Ive always been very focused on my body and really don’t want to fight my body for the rest of my life.

If doing weight training it is imperative for women to get enough protein. This can be difficult on a plant only regime. Consider healthy protein drinks. Personally, this post menopausal 53 year old follows 4 guidelines but I do believe in grass fed, hormone free meat for protein. So many great amino acid building blocks in meat.

    Awesome Video, Sophie!!!
My own research in past years coincides with all that you stated! It's an absolutely superb decision for one to try to consume a Whole-Foods Plant-Based routine that is Low in Oils & Sugar. Per a book on all cooking oils that my elderly Mother purchased years ago we shouldn't consume nearly the amount of oil that's in our diets today! Plus the book went so far as to state that we should cease consumption of most oils outside of Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil [low-heat sauteing best only; and heart healthy - low in both monounsaturated & polyunsaturated fats] and Organic Avocado Oil [just for high heat cooking] and Organic Coconut Oil [cooking; Dr. Oz show stated it also aides Fat Loss once consumed regularly].

Jusy now, my diet is showing results. For the past 4 months, i cut out entirely sugar! What a difference. About 3 years ago, I gave up red meat, alcohol, bottled juices, I only drink smoothies I make, I gave up bread, pasta and rice. I am able to maintain a weight of 115 or 117 lbs., I am 55 and 5ft tall. So it is working. I plan on gollowing this forever. Exercise is a really hard for me, I need to do more weights, like you suggest, but, I have fibromyalgia, and everything is painful and bothering. Still, thanks for the tips.

Just began having hot flashes/sleeping issues/belly fat this year at 58...literally overnight! Had testing and still have hormones but they are low/normal. Cortisol was low, which wasn’t surprising due to lots of stress the last few years. Going on supplements for adrenals and will forgo hormones for now. Will definitely implement these principles which just means tightening up a bit. Already don’t eat meat/consume soda. Alcohol will be a once a month treat. I feel empowered by what I’ve learned and can’t wait to feel better!

I just have to tell you, you're so beautiful! You are a shining light of an example and just found your channel and I'm SO glad I did! At age 55 I went to the hospital for emergency surgery on my spine, and was told I have a form of post menopausal breast cancer. My back story is basically, I've exercised my whole life almost everyday. I intermittent fast most days, up to about 14 hours. I only drink MAYBE twice a month, half of a cocktail, glass of wine or beer. I'm not a great eater but I'm definitely not a horrible eater- I mean with regard to what I actually eat.
I think I have another compression fracture and I'm afraid to go back to the doctor, bc I'd begged my pcp to refer me to an obgyn to TEST MY HORMONES but he never did! I asked him many times! And then I end up in hospital with breast cancer!

I started halving my added sugar to coffee by using this stevia blend sweetener: www.amazon.com/NatriSweet-Substitute-Concentrated-Naturally-Unflavored/dp/B018SWE5DY
I used to add 2 level icedteaspoonfuls to my 11-ounce cup of coffee. Now I put in 4 drops of this sweetener and 1 level icedteaspoonful of sugar. The sweetener isn't sweet as much as it takes away the bitterness in the coffee. Eventually I will switch fully to the sweetener as my taste buds adjust, but even just doing this is helpful. Baby steps!

Keto diet with fasting change that. Just look into it. Be kind and patient with the process. I started eliminating carbs then sugar. I allow myself sugar free deserts weekends. Like I said its a process.

STOP Jogging ( fitness trainer here🙂)........... start lifting weights, you will be SHOCKED how fast your body responds....& No you will not get muscles like a man....Almost impossible unless you PURPOSELY have a trainer & STERIODS.... ( not going to happen)........( start off light, learn proper form...don’t rush it ....u will end up injured ( set backs)..... I’m almost 60 & have same tummy as Sophie, & I have cheat days/ meals....life is too short, lol

What if I am an estrogen positive breast cancer survivor who can’t take hormone replacements?

    • @d.colbert6869
      @d.colbert6869 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Wow! Hi Marla, truly sorry to hear that. Well, strongly suggest you see a Integrated Functional Doctor and a Naturopathic Doctor ASAP! High-estrogen is QUITE problematic and eventually may lead to a host of illnesses with bad side effects, pls believe me! You definitely need 'Hormone Therapy.

Ok started listening to this and got to plant based diet. I have celiac disease and oral allergy syndrome. I can’t have wheat, barley or rye or any raw fruits or vegetables (except some lettuces) without allergic reaction. Would you advise me to try to eat plant based under these conditions? Can’t have raw nuts either. I have roasted them myself but finding raw nuts that aren’t on shared equipment with wheat is very difficult.

Hi! I enjoyed your video! Thank you. Question, if you get your blood tests and your hormones, cortisol and thyroid are all out of wack, is there any safe treatment?

Thanks for sharing. This video was very helpful. I’m just starting at age 45 noticing more bloating and stomach fat. Can you do a video on what else to expect during menopause age and foods, supplements to help hot flashes, vaginal dryness and so on. I’m trying castor oil packets for breast health and also to cleanse my liver. Maybe find a specialist who will answer the questions. I’m always looking for holistic approaches to prevent suffering. 💜

You've come to the right place Cynthia - I teach all of the above. And actually (head's up) my next book is all about how to move through menopause differently - with joy and excitement. Stay tuned.
