  • Similarities Between The Sea Beast And How to Train Your Dragon!
It seems like everyone’s watching Netflix’s animated movie, The Sea Beast. But, did this animated adventure story remind you of another fan-favorite flick that also had a lot to say about the relationship between monsters and their hunters? If so, you were probably thinking of the 2010 DreamWorks classic, How to Train Your Dragon. These movies had a lot in common with each other right off the bat, but some of the similarities are a bit deeper and more difficult to put your finger on. Some characters have a lot of similar qualities - like Red and Toothless, Hiccup and Maisie, Hiccup and Jacob, and Stoic and Captain Crow. The vikings and the sailors in these two universes are very alike, as are their off-duty hangout spots and even the magical worlds they live in. There are beasts that are kept as pets, hunters that change their misguided ways, and ancient texts that teach about the wild beasts of their respective worlds. You may have even noticed that the two movies have similar opening scenes as well as parallel fight sequences. And, of course, they have morals and plots that are very much aligned. It’s not easy for How to Train Your Dragon fans to watch The Sea Beast without thinking of the qualities it shares with the sweet monster hunting film that came before it. So, let’s talk about all the things that make The Sea Beast remind us of How to Train Your Dragon for a brand new generation.

How to train your dragon and Sea Beast have similarities. They are about a group of humans who are scared of monsters and the main characters are children who want to get away from their home and find mythical creatures and they show the village that the creatures were friendly to humans as long as they coexist

Slighter spoilers but something I loved so much in sea beast was they showed how much this war has done. When red swims over the sea floor and you see all the bones and sunken ships you really now feel how old the war is. We get to see the casualties of war on both sides and and makes me remember the quote from the first HTTYD

Do you want to know something? I'm not even there for that! This movie was a miracle, considering the terrible series we received after the last movie, it shows the monsters in a natural way, not just "I tame you, you become good", no. The confrontations between Hiccup/Stoick and Jacob/Captain Crow.
Obviously one’s, well, *Hiccup* with his biological father and the other’s a strapping guy with his adopted father-figure, but at the same time both were knocked down by their respective paternal figures over their perceived betrayals over the very monsters they’ve traditionally hunted.
Except Crow *really* wanted to kill Jacob at that point, and it kinda hurts less considering Jacob’s overall physique, whereas with Stoick he *knows* about Hiccup’s own physicality, but is too enraged over his son’s perceived betrayal to think clearly.
In some ways, you feel for both Crow and Stoick, except Captain Crow was willing to kill Maisie over the first loss of Red, so ‘Beast’ kinda took a darker turn regarding said paternal figure.

Also the sea beast had a lot more darker themes for a kids movie than httyd, like actual blood in many scenes as an example. The whole handling of the ship as they fought the monsters was very well done and correct and not something you’d usually see in a kids movie, it felt quite realistic and scary, it kinda felt like I was watching a pirates of the caribbean movie but cartoonified. Don’t even get me started on that scene when they fall in the water and red’s just staring at them from the depths of the darkness, if I was a kid seeing that I’d get nightmares lmao. Not to mention the weapons were more realistic than httyd, which were usually exaggerated and wonky. The sea beasts weapons looked real, the way they handled them looked realistic and dangerous. It created this atmosphere in the movie that this wasn’t just some make believe story, but a place where people could actually die, where they knew they could die and so they needed to kill first. It was definitely a lot more mature than httyd. And I really enjoyed that aspect of it, we need more kids movies like that honestly.

While yes, the Red Bluster design has strong resemblance to Toothless (mostly just the face) and the plot is generally similar to HTTYD, i think many of the points made in the video are a bit of a stretch. The characters in Sea Beasts are distinct and different enough to stand apart from HTTYD, and if anything, Cpt. Crow reminded me more of John Silver from Treasure Planet than Stoic. Comparing Hiccup to Maisie and Jacob felt pretty off too as for every similarity they might share with Hiccup, they have just as many if not more differences. Many of the other points made in the video are such generic things that you can't even really say it was copied from HTTYD, and that its just more cliche than anything. Sea Beasts, while sharing similarities to HTTYD, having a pretty predictable plot, and having a weaker ending than it could have had was still a solid film in its own right with great animation, and was a pleasant surprise compared to many other Netflix animated films.

Edit: Thanks to all the comments - I'll admit I jumped the gun but I still believe Sanders has an influence regardless that his name isn't posted anywhere. For that I apologise however I do stand my ground.
There is a very valid reason why both HTTYD and Sea Beast are similar... Chris Sanders.
If you search for any information on William's art style there is none easily found or identified whilst there is a tone for Sanders given his illustration background. This art style mimic goes back to 2008 when Williams replaced Sanders after the base concept and style were done for Bolt. We're taught in Art School to mimic famous art styles, and Sander's style is relatively simple compared to others, given I've tried to draw like him for Illustration practice (when finding my own style). Since 2008 when Bolt took off it's possible that Williams may have retained the ability to mimic Sander's style despite not being too evident in movies such as Frozen, Big Hero 6 and Moana - it's almost identical to Sander's in HTTYD given the similarity in the storyline as well (Sea Beast is said to be a middle ground between HTTYD and Moby Dick).
Despite Sanders having nothing to do with Sea Beast it's obvious Williams is highly influenced by Sander's art style and it's sad to see that there is almost a complete ripoff with the art style in this movie. I can also speculate that any artists who worked under Sanders could have moved back to Disney to work under Williams which brings in the same issue, given artists work under one or more styles throughout their lifetimes. It's sad to see that it wasn't picked up on in concept.

Both films are pretty good, but I can say that there are big differences between the films when it comes to characters, theme, and even the tone. I feel like where HTTYD focused more on "We humans simply misunderstand these creatures, and so we should tame them."
The Sea Beast kinda focuses a little more deeper on the human's perspective. They don't try and tame the beasts, and I feel like the theme is more so "What is a great death? And why does it include a cycle of never-ending vengeance?" The characters, especially the crew all have someone or something that was taken from them and it makes you really understand from their perspective how they feel. You can empathize with them. But this blame isn't exactly put on either side, but it does try and find the root.
And another thing, I was afraid that the kinda cute soft design of the creatures would be hyper focused on. And I'm glad that it actually wasn't in the film! Yeah, the bluster is kinda cute, but like real beasts or animals, it was the lack of humanization or familiarity that made you understand why humans would be afraid of them. Because you can't understand or predict their behavior or actions....just like real animals!
Its the whole "hyena laugh" misconception. Just because an animal displays a trait that it familiar to us, does not mean that's exactly what it is. Laughter from an animal may not be a sign of joy at all, but distress or agitation. So I kinda appreciate that even though in design the Bluster may look cute like Toothless....but they are still in every right A SEA BEAST, (not some cutesy puppy to be tamed by humans)

I love the HTTYD series but as soon as the concept blew up, I KNEW that any films involving friendship between man and beast in future would swing all the way back around to HTTYD. When I was coming up with character ideas as a kid (2004) the number one thing I wanted to see was a person riding a dragon, ya know, a typical plot. When Eragon came out, oh I lost my shit. But when HTTYD came out it was even better!
But the moment that series took off...that was it. The entire concept was layered over any other concepts to a point plots similar to befriending mighty creatures are snuffed out and called "HTTYD Ripoff" The same guy that designed this film worked on HTTYD anyway. So all the pointers don't matter anyway, his ideas he put into the HTTYD franchise was put into this film too, WITHOUT a "ripoff" effect

That’s kind of the sad things with movies nowadays. Or anything of that merit. If one starts to do something that appeases a general audience, it automatically gets linked back to something that came before and basically kills off the new thing in a heartbeat. Also, sings of people disliking the crown early on might have eased the ending where the crowd sides with Maisie, cause ngl it felt pretty flat and unjustified.

    • @kassandrabolz8220
      @kassandrabolz8220 ปีที่แล้ว

And both Toothless and Red had a name by the hunters. Toothless is a Night Fury dragon and Red is a Red Bluster sea monster. Still love the humans misunderstood beasts theme in both films. You know to teach kids not to judge beasts by their scary appearances but by what good they can do if you’ll just give them a chance. Also delivers the “don’t judge a book by it’s cover” lesson as well by don’t judge beasts by their scary appearance and instead focus on what good they can do. I know I said that twice but what other way should I put it. Also each of the films young protagonist starts off by wanting to be like the other hunters and later not wanting to kill them or be a hunter just with one encounter with a beast who didn’t actually try to kill them at first sight. Also while Hiccup has his father alive and his mother was revealed to be alive in the second HTTYD film, Maisie‘s both parents are revealed both dead that were killed by sea monsters she was left orphaned but still at first trying to continue her family’s legacy by wanting to become a sea monster hunter herself and kill sea monsters and later not wanting that job and not wanting to kill sea beasts after she befriended Red and same with Hiccup, he also wanted to become a dragon hunter and kill dragons and later not wanting that job and kill dragons after befriending Toothless. The only difference is that Hiccup got into dragon hunting training and Maisie didn’t get any sort of training whatsoever at all but they still make that speech on how hunting and killing is not the way but seeing how Maisie had more luck than Hiccup had and Hiccup had to do a rescue attempt with some smaller dragons to defeat the king dragon (I forgot what his name was) in order to convince his father and the rest of the Vikings to accept dragons as their friends instead of enemies. But overall both films were good and I watched both of them and I immediately noticed the similarities between them two and I was glad I wasn’t the only one who thought of this idea so this video was impressive, impressive indeed.

Most of the similarities are more cliche rather than direct copies. But, even though there are some similarities between characters and scenes, like Maisie and Hiccup, or hunters being reformed, most people can agree that the film is still pretty good. You can make something original and new, and it could still turn out to be horrible. Meanwhile there are plenty of times where unoriginal animation are made, and they can still be an absolute hit.

One thing I didn't really like about Sea Beasts was that the main characters found one example of a nice sea monster and assumed that all of them were like this, despite literally being attacked out of nowhere by a giant crab for seemingly no reason. I liked the movie enough, but there were just so many assumptions related to their "don't kill monsters" message for everyone else in their world.

I strongly disagree. While I can see how people can pinpoint similarities, there are many things that make them different. The Sea Beast reminds me more of Drifting Dragons(Netflix animated show and Manga) in it's hunting style, especially when it came to Red. However, instead of hunting the beasts out of necessity, the Hunters hunted them out of sport. The 'necessity' of hunting the Sea Beasts is actually passed down through generations of false history planted by the government. Whereas in HTTYD, the only reason the vikings wanted to kill the dragons is because they posed a real threat to livestock and living on Berk in general. It wasn't until the end of the first movie where the vikings found out the reason why the dragons would raid their village, so they killed out of temporary necessity.

Yes thank you! So many people seem to think because of a few similarities it means blatant lazy copying of a previous franchise, when that's not always the case, a big note on this movie is the people who helped make it, one of whom had a big role in the creation of the httyd movie itself, so no wonder there are similarities here and there, but I would say it definitely not am exact copy or a blatant rip off, some people just gotta watch it first before they jump to conclusions.

I have mixed feelings about this movie. Yes, there’s absolutely no question about whether it was inspired by How to Train Your Dragon or not. You could see where the story was going from a mile away and Red’s expressions are very similar to Toothless. But honestly.. That’s ok! It’s hard to make a good movie completely from scratch and I’m alright with people taking inspiration from other films as long as it’s not a blatant ripoff. I was IMMEDIATELY blown away by the animation as soon as it started. And the voice acting was on par. It felt like the voice actors were grabbed straight out of the 1800’s and you could feel the emotion coming off the characters. Yes the pacing of the movie was a bit weird and it feels like a big part of the story is missing. And there were also some side characters that felt like they were pretty useless to the actual story, but I don’t think it’s right to completely rip into this movie and not give credit where credit is do. Overall I really enjoyed it and it’s a great movie to watch in your spare time.

Personally, I think Sea Beast is an inspired mix of both HTTYD and Herman Melville's Moby Dick.
    I love it💕

It may be similar but I really loved the sea beast. Really enjoyed watching each scene. Not a single moment I thought it was boring.

I feel like the little girl came around way too quickly. At the beginning she was talking about how her heroic parents fought monsters and was determined to continue their legacy, but it felt like Red looked at her once and she spent the rest of the movie like "no wait we were wrong!"
Hiccups was better developed because not only did he spare Toothless out of mercy when Toothless was the underdog, but he actually spent time wondering if he had made a mistake. He thought about it notably, and when he said "everything we know about you guys is wrong" it was after so much evidence had piled up.

@@dinodare1605 Well, regardless, Red is a monster. And if it, of its massive size, proves passive, then others might as well be too, especially at a smaller scale. And you're forgeting about Blue and the other tiny varieties. Just because a few, extensive species attacks them, doesn't mean the others are bad, or that they're all, overall, horrible. Would you say that about lions, wolves, and other predators? They're just serving their natural ecological niches. They shouldn't be hunted to extinction because they're doing what they need to survive.

I’ve been watching How to Train Your Dragon as long as I can remember… I only watched Sea Beast because one of my cousins asked me to. It was impossible to not notice the similarities when I literally had a toy of Toothless right next to me.. and I wasn’t sure anyone else noticed!

The best scene in the sea beast is when Jacob n maisie fall into the water and maisie pointing toward stand still monster RED watching them both from the menacing depth...that scene is bone chilling 🥶
