That slowdown we call "clock stretching". It's from too many CPU intensive assets. Usually from large formations of multicrew planes but also infantry, boats, etc. It seems to be the primary engine limitation and why you generally don't see lot's of a/c in missions.
I agree, the long channel flights get rough after awhile.

Just curious, but are you planning to revert back to the Spitfire Mk XIV or stick with the Tempest Mk V?

I haven't decided. I guess it depends on the mission types that are predominant for each plane. I'll have to start up a test campaign with the Spit after DDay and see what's available.
