Kudos to you Sir. I had to hide my love Zappa and his music from our children. They knew about Frank because of a poster that was hung on one of the walls in our home. My son read the Chili Pepper book, and Frank Zappa kept coming up. He asked me if there was something he could listen to. I took him to my collection and showed him. He had never seen it before. Fuck!! was his response. I gave him a copy of the album "You are what you is" He played that album non stop in his car for about 6 months straight and that was his only play list during those six months. Every time he played it, he would always hear something new he never heard before on every track. He has now purchased every Zappa cd. Sadly he will never see Frank Zappa live, however he has had the chance to hear it live on stage through Dweezil and an Australian cover band Petulant Frenzy. I too never got to see Frank Zappa live because of substance abuse, one of my biggest regrets in life. I envy any one who has. He even successfully got his mother to appreciate the genius that Frank Zappa is. My work is done! There are no ex Zappa fans, You are a Zappa fan for life! th-cam.com/video/inioEdxtgx4/w-d-xo.html
Once a Zappa fan , always a Zappa fan. Listening and collecting for 34 years and counting. Thank you Dereck for sharing your knowledge and passion, from fellow music collector.
This was great to watch. I'm 17 and it's been amazing diving into his discography he's just got so many great albums it's really tough picking favourites. Also it's cool seeing other stuff you have which I really like, such as your CAN records, especially the damo trilogy although not to undermine their other albums
Wow bro, you're a real Zappa freak. Me too ! I'm 59, so I've been listening to Frank for 47 years now! Saw him perform twice in Rotterdam Holland. Pure genius!
I hung out with Jimmy Carl Black at a bar for hours. Place was almost deserted, a table with 4 people, a pretty blonde bartender lady and Jimmy Carl and me. He was not drinking at all and regaled me with stories. He would not allow me to bitch but he did a lot of bitching! I have a ton of Zappa and been a fan since the sixties. What a good time meeting JCB
I've been getting back into vinyl and have been checking out the vinyl videos on YT - really appreciate these videos. A few weeks ago I found a mint 'Sleep Dirt' LP. I got rid of my records when I was getting ready to leave for college in '84 and I've never forgiven myself for giving up 'Sleep Dirt' on vinyl, especially after Zappa released it on CD with vocals on some of the songs. Listened to it all the way through and been listening to 'The Ocean...' at least once a day since then =).
I had all of those on vinyl, apart from Mothermania, and now, after many moves and upheavals, I have his whole catalog on CD. But I miss my old vinyl. Overnite Sensation was always THE ONE for me though. It was the album that got me hooked. BTW, I also liked your set on Gentle Giant. I heard an interview with Frank once, where the lady talking to him asked him if he thought anyone else was doing interesting stuff at that time (1975) and he immediately said "I heard some very good cuts from a group called Gentle Giant". The man had taste!
WONDERFUL Video!! I stumbled across this as a "suggested" video for me to watch since Im a HUGE Zappa fan! It was nice to see an Intelligent person with so many Zappa albums discussing them, especially a Black man as Im not too sure how many non whites get into Zappa. I don't mean to come off racisy here and If I do I humbly apologise. As you yourself say in your video, Zappa was trying to "school" folks-ALL folks. He saaterized everything and everybody....which is one of the many reasons he appealed to me. I look forward to watching more of your vids and would like to know more about who you've played with musically and what youre doing musically now? Thank you for this vid. Much success in the future.
I currently don't own any Zappa albums on vinyl. I do have two on CD and plan on getting more. I will likely pick up his vinyl LP's if i can find them for a good price. Great video! You have quite the Zappa vinyl collection.
Now that is a Zappa collection. Just great to see each copy of the different releases. There were so many. I only saw Zappa one time in Boston. It was the year that they had the voting booths set up in the Orpheum Theatre. I actually signed up to vote as an independent that night. I think it was 1988. Great story about Zappa playing sober. I now love him even more~My two favorites 'Overnight Sensation' and 'Apostrophe' On to part 2~ Thanks Dereck~ Rob/Boston
LOOOONG!!!! Thank you Thank you Dereck!! I could go on and on, but I'll just say that I love, LOVE The Grand Wazoo! Laughed at your little ditty there! Thanks again Dereck, gonna watch part 2 tomorrow... baby says bedtime.
Damn.......I haven't been able to keep up with all of your posts but when I saw that you'd done a Zappa one, well, I sure as hell had to watch it!! Beautiful collection, you covered many of my favs! My Zappa is all over the place....some nice vinyl --- "We're Only In It For The Money", "Weasels Ripped My Flesh" (where was that great one?), etc., etc. Some CD's, even some cassettes, probably 25 to 30 different albums, & ya can't help but want more! Cool post Derek, on to part 2.......
Koodos to the man that knows his Zappa ! Your musical tastes are all over the place just like mine . Examples are Ray Baretto , Orquestra Via Dora , David Bowie , Jimi Hendrix , CAN , Tangerine Dream, Peter Tosh , Miles Davis ans Richard Wagner .
Great vid, great comments and great collection. Zappa is a pillar in my musical life(music is as close as I get to a god or heaven). He is pure genius and so under explained in the story of music in the 20th century. I love the stones, zeppelin, the beatles etc...and they are great rock bands, but Frank is so much more complex& intriguing(with some effort). Anyway, I now see I have to start watching your vids;Officially a fan. Great collection btw. I am rebuilding mine & your vid gets me pumped
Great video Dereck I will look forward to part 2. It's very hard to find mint copies of his albums all mine a beat too hopefully one day they will all be reissued on vinyl.
Ah man that made me smile when you said you went to school in Alberquerque, I live about 3 hrs away and have family there. I actually turned a cousin on to overnight sensation that lives in Las Lunas, 30 minutes from there ( crazy).
LOVE this video (and part 2 also). As far as your description of One Size Fits All: You said it perfectly, man! :-) "Po-Jama People" and "San Ber'dino"... SO damn fonkay, especially with JGW doin' his thing. Thanks for sharing your awesome FZ collection (which is definitely worthy of showing off) as well as your thoughts and insights about the man himself. :-)
I really enjoyed your perspective on Zappa and loved watching you share your collection. As I write this, I haven't checked to see if you're still active on TH-cam. I'm a huge Zappa fan also, and I've started a channel for the VC. A few videos talk about Zappa and the connections other musicians and group have with him. I hope you check it out! And I will certainly look to see if you're still active. But in my "watch next" list, I see you made a video about the Residents and Snakefinger! OMG, huge fan here also! So I'm going to go watch that now!
Of course there first album is a classic in every sense. I bought this in 69, and I was blown away. Any rock and roller around my age, (I was 17, I living in the San Francisco Bay area), loved this album. Of course it was only played on what we called, the FM underground, IE, KMPX, KSAN, and in San Jose, KSJO. They played album cuts of all rock album. The day Tommy, by The Who, came out, KMPX played all 4 sides, and I bought it the next day. Certain albums I knew, just by hearing them once, were going to be classic. In The Court of The Crimson King, by King Crimson was one of those. This album, when you here it sucks you in. From 21st Schoid Man, (which when you started the song, before a note was played, you could hear the hum of the amp, ((I am glad they left that in album.))At that time, was the loudest song I ever heard but you could not know that, unless you played the album, on the radio it only so loud), to beautiful and haunting In The Court of The Crimson King, the last song, than you are released from the grips of the album. A truly unique experience. I am glad I was brought up in that time, when music was real music, and the bands that laid it all out on the line, and experimented with different styles and songs. There were some that didn't make it. Ahh, the ones that did, changed rock for ever. PS, to all of this, in Dec, 1969 at Filmore West I saw them, in concert. You might think, they could not make the same music they recorded in the studio, but you would be wrong. They did a fantastic job, live, in concert!!! A fact. Dave in Sierra Vista AZ.
Nice film you did . I actually worked with Frank in 1988 and I shot the cover of the album ' GUITAR' ... I have some stories I can tell you about Zappa , if you're curious to know ... : 0 )
Milo Alboniko So, you're Sergio Albonico! (I take it they spelt your name wrong?) "Guitar"s cover is one of my favourite photos of FZ. I have that cover on my wall! Did you take the photo inside of Frank playing the sunburst Strat?
Yes . Well , there is a story behind that cover . I was Frank's photographer for the 88 tour . I had selected great photos for that cover . She (Gail the B...h ) ended up chosing the one I liked the least . Frank was great to work with . Nobody in that band liked Gail . She was always making trouble for everyone .
Milo Alboniko It's unbelievable what she did to her kids in the will, Splitting the Trust up so unevenly, how twisted was that?? Guaranteed to set them at each others throats. I saw 4 shows on that '88 tour, 2 Wembley shows, the Birmingham NEC and the Rotterdam Ahoy, and all with my Sony Professional Walkman in tow! Almost got the shit kicked out of me by the bouncers at the NEC! Those postcards sound well cool! I'll send you my address in a personal message.
You got it together, man. You know what's excellent music. My personal Zappa favourite is Roxy & Elsewhere. IMO there is no live album from anybody that comes even close. And ain't Dweezil just the shit? Wow! Father and son...
FYI: I Started Listening to Frank in 1966 (Freak Out) at the age of 12 !!!!! When Frank would release a piece of Vinyl, I'd own it within Weeks, therefore I OWN EVERY FZ RELEASE !!! Because of Frank, I was Forced into buying a CD player since NO LONGER WERE HIS RELEASES ON VINYL, UNTIL THE MASTERS COLLECTION (which I do not own (can't afford it !)) I attended EVERY HALLOWEEN SHOW & OTHERS !!!!!! PS: I AM AN AUDIOPHILE SINCE VERY YOUNG, SO MY VINYL COLLECTION IS MINT !!!!!!!
Great selection 👍 I felt offended by Zappa many times too 😂 but it was all education in the end. His lyrics were very smart. I now listen mostly for the percussion, arrangements and production quality is superb.
@TheHeavymetalpenguin I am not aware of it being censored and I bought my copy over thirty years ago. What I do know is that Zappa did not release the original mix on cd.
Hanging with Ray White at a Porn festival.. classic, Love it..! Ray is indeed a great guy as well as one talented individual. I met him a few years back , two of my friends were playing in a band with him which also included the great Bobby Vega on bass. But again really cool guy, sadly I didn't get the chance to pick his brain about Frank, lucky you.. I too need Shut Up & Play Yer Guitar on viny among other things, only have it on CD. But yeah man beautiful collection! Thanks for sharing.
I totally agree with you concerning Grand Wazoo. I graduated HS in 1974, but purchased GW in early 1973. It stayed on my turntable for weeks. No albums prior to it or since have sounded exactly like it. Waka Jawaka was a close 2nd, but not near a satisfying listen throughout as GW.
I would love to meet Ike Willis. Nice collection, I've got all of Zappas LPs except ORCHESTRAL FAVORITES. I traded it for something and I'm still kicking myself in the ass. Now I have to get another copy so I can say "I've got them all".
I think the only thing I didn't see here that I have on vinyl is Bongo Fury with Captain Beefheart. Like him or not, Zappa is one of the only people who practically invented a sound all his own. I think that's probably one of the highest praises you could give any musician.
Absolutely Free was recently reissued as a Deluxe Double 180 Gram Vinyl Edition which might be well worth checking out. I see you've got an open reel-to-reel machine on a loudspeaker. You should probably move that to a location that doesn't have large magnets near it.
just found this. A few things if you don't already know: - Uncle Meat was finished and came out on VHS in 1987. The DVD is not out yet... but there are many others. - You saw them in 1973! Do you remember where, in Omaha? If so, what venue?
It's funny you mentioned Andre Lewis in this video, because I was just about to ask you on your latest video whether or not you knew of the man or personally knew him, since he comes from your hometown. I was at a record show a few days ago and stumbled across Mandre's debut album and I bought it based on the cover alone. Brought it home, gave it a listen, and got a real kick out of it. Now I'm looking to collect all of Michael Andre Lewis's albums. Do you have any of Andre's records in your collection, Dereck? And if you do, would you mind doing a video on them and telling us more about the man. As far as I'm concerned his debut solo album is a hidden gem that people need to know about.
Hey, Dereck just wondering if you've received the comment above this one, and wondering if you'd like to do a response. I would greatly appreciate it and would love to hear more about Andre Lewis.
I said I wasn't going to do it, but I've already bought about 6 or 7 of the new Zappa/Universal analog master CDs. I'm enjoying the original Hot Rats, and Sleep Dirt the most. Also picked up Burnt Weeny, Weasels, Chunga's Revenge, Waka Jawaka, and One Size Fits All.
I bought the latest "we're only in it for the money" release (late 2016 release). I was hoping that (being 2017 and all) it's be the rev-f version, that is, completely uncensored. but not.
dereck, maybe you've heard this a million times but you really resemble zappa's bodyguard john smothers. saw the grandmothers (later than you did), chatted with don preston and napoleon murphy brock at a meet and greet after the show. it was great. regarding roxy, as an example of "talking down", would you be referring to comments like, "you're still too adagio, i keep tellin' ya."? obviously this comment would drift right over the head of anyone never schooled in any musical concepts whatsoever.
@SlimeAmTheBest I think it is best to say that I am not into putting down music I don't listen to. People have different sensibilities in regards to taste. Although I might think of some artists within genres as not being up to my personal standard I'm not going to state so publicly. Surely someone would be offended. I don't want to offend anyone.
Zappa records seem to go for stupid prices on ebay, but they aint that expensive if your patient. My copy of Apostrophe' was only 5 pounds and was NM. Nice collection though, im jelous LOL ive allways tried to get my mits on a copy of Uncle Meat but i always get outbid, UK copies can go for silly prices.
Thanx so much for showing. À Big nice collection you got there! Im thinking like derek dont ever bring home any shit. All is in best condition and first class music. Its à pitty zappas so expensive. I still miss hotrats in My coll. One day ill find it. Yo the man
Brown shoes don't make it, quit school why fake it? I just picked up a used Zappa "Orchestral", but when I took it out to play it, the record was actually "Overnight Sensation". I wasn't disappointed.
Kudos to you Sir.

great to see this i was a fan going back to 1968 great musician the very best!!
i'm just getting into zappa and he's already one of my alltime favorite artists
Thank you for this. I know is an old video. But I thoroughly enjoy it.
great collection of zappa treats. once you get hooked on him, it's impossible to stop!
You got that right. FZ was the best!
Thanks for this. Always liked Zappa but never had any albums. Now I have 6 vinyls from mothers to Zappa. They are hard to find. But they are out there

Lumpy Gravy was the first Zappa album I heard when I was 15. Loved it!
Now that is a Zappa collection. Just great to see each copy of the different releases. There were so many. I only saw Zappa one time in Boston. Ruben and the Jets is def worth revisiting, imo, there's a lot of cool subtle oddities and beauty there
@TheInfiniteGroove You got good ears. Thanks for being there, always so good to hear from you.
Very entertaining. The scope of Frank Zappa was something to behold.
Looking at this again.Great collection Dereck.Lots of stuff I'm missing, really want to get hold of Hot Rats
Great video - Il love the jazz era and contemporary things - early stuff too

love Zappa agree with you whole heartily ...Zoot Allures my favorite album because my first experience when i was 13.... mind blown !
Great selection - inspiring
Great vid, great comments and great collection. Zappa is a pillar in my musical life(music is as close as I get to a god or heaven). He is pure genius and so under explained in the story of music in the 20th century. I love the stones, zeppelin, the beatles etc...and they are great rock bands, but Frank is so much more complex& intriguing(with some effort). Anyway, I now see I have to start watching your vids;Officially a fan. Great collection btw. I am rebuilding mine & your vid gets me pumped

Ah man that made me smile when you said you went to school in Alberquerque, I live about 3 hrs away and have family there. I actually turned a cousin on to overnight sensation that lives in Las Lunas, 30 minutes from there ( crazy).
I was at the early show at the Fillmore the night John and Yoko showed up
Wow!
I was at the late show the next night . Still have the program.
LOVE this video (and part 2 also). As far as your description of One Size Fits All: You said it perfectly, man! :-) "Po-Jama People" and "San Ber'dino"... Great update!....Ciao from Italy!....
Nice film you did . I actually worked with Frank in 1988 and I shot the cover of the album ' GUITAR' ... I have some stories I can tell you about Zappa , if you're curious to know ... : 0 )

Milo Alboniko It's unbelievable what she did to her kids in the will, Splitting the Trust up so unevenly, how twisted was that?? Guaranteed to set them at each others throats. Hi Milo, I sent you my address on Google Plus, if it's not shown up would you let me know here and I'll email it to you. Cheers.
first album I heard was sheik yerbouti, that was it, hooked, so glad they are reissuing them all, just ordered "freak out" great video, thanks,
That's cool that that the Mothers signed your Absolutely Free LP.
I wish you lived next door to me as I could spend days looking through/listening to your collection, of course you might be really glad I don't :D
This was great!
I find myself nodding and going 'yeah' as if I was there in your company. Much better going in random order btw. :)
You got it together, man. You know what's excellent music. My personal Zappa favourite is Roxy & Elsewhere. IMO there is no live album from anybody that comes even close. And ain't Dweezil just the shit? Wow! Father and son...

Agree 100% with your comments on Studio Tan. It is an excellent and under appreciated album.
@TheHeavymetalpenguin Great to hear from you! I'm still acquiring more Zappa. Yes!
Amazing collection
Saw Zappa with Stevie Ray Vaughan at the pier in New York, on the Them or Us tour.
@TheHeavymetalpenguin Much appreciated!

Absolutely Free was recently reissued as a Deluxe Double 180 Gram Vinyl Edition which might be well worth checking out. I see you've got an open reel-to-reel machine on a loudspeaker. You should probably move that to a location that doesn't have large magnets near it.
Ray was very cool and friendly. Ike was too but he women on his mind!
just found this. A few things if you don't already know:
- Uncle Meat was finished and came out on VHS in 1987. The DVD is not out yet... but there are many others.
- You saw them in 1973! Do you remember where, in Omaha? If so, what venue?
@Paneeks1960 The genius of Zappa, he got you to vote. Now that's a cool story.
Love this video
you are absolutly right about Studio Tan,it's a great record
i keep my copy of apostrophe up on the wall in the living room because it's such a good picture
Nexus Verbal Will remember.
@EarlofSuave308 I have to get back in to this stuff. I've forgotten so much.
Love it!
Right on...
@JasonsVinylObsession I agree and am looking for Bongo Fury.
I am a big Zappa fan from way back
Cleetus Awreetus Awrightus. Excellent man!
@jeffthrow6892 Good to hear from you. I'd like to get everything by the man.
Wow, just the autographed AF & WOIIFTM worth the price of admission. cool
I bought the latest "we're only in it for the money" release (late 2016 release). I was hoping that (being 2017 and all) it's be the rev-f version, that is, completely uncensored. but not.
Roxy and elsewhere is one of the best live albums ever
Always, cool...
dereck, maybe you've heard this a million times but you really resemble zappa's bodyguard john smothers. saw the grandmothers (later than you did), chatted with don preston and napoleon murphy brock at a meet and greet after the show. it was great.
regarding roxy, as an example of "talking down", would you be referring to comments like, "you're still too adagio, i keep tellin' ya."? obviously this comment would drift right over the head of anyone never schooled in any musical concepts whatsoever.
@EarlofSuave308 Mucho agree!
@TheHeavymetalpenguin I like the original. Frank had it remastered with updated drums but I prefer the original sound.
Do you have a Black Sabbath collection?
@SlimeAmTheBest I think it is best to say that I am not into putting down music I don't listen to. People have different sensibilities in regards to taste. Although I might think of some artists within genres as not being up to my personal standard I'm not going to state so publicly. Surely someone would be offended. I don't want to offend anyone.
@SlimeAmTheBest I am pretty sure my friend is saying, Dereck doesn't ring home shit records.
The Grand Wazoo & Waka Jawaka + One Size Fits All, Roxy, my favorites - oh I forgot Greggery Peccary
@VINYLxDISORDER It's the bomb!
@Dbrown2190 Still on the hunt for more.
Yo the man
Frank's son Dweezil plays a mean guitar! agree?
Your my hero
@EarlofSuave308 Now, to get a matching cover....
@SlimeAmTheBest That's cool.
Grand wazoo is amazing
Brown shoes don't make it, quit school why fake it?
I just picked up a used Zappa "Orchestral", but when I took it out to play it, the record was actually "Overnight Sensation". I wasn't disappointed.
@SlimeAmTheBest Nice.
@kimjenkins123 Finding a clean copy seems impossible.
@makingofasoul My copy of Ruben is pretty old and kind of beat unfortunately.
