- SLOTH BEAR STANDOFF is the latest episode of On the Creature Trail with the Kratt Brothers. This time Chris is in India on the creature trail looking for a very special type of bear with a really cool set of creature powers: SLOTH BEARS! These bears have curved claws that allow them to dig into nests of small invertebrates like ants and termites then suck them up with their mouth!

Sloth bears are known for their propensity to behave aggressively toward humans, and are believed to be one of the most dangerous wild animals in India. So, it's probably best if you DON'T go running out like he did to go find yourself one!

They are actually quite timid as they try to avoid human contact and will usually only act aggressively if surprised or if someone gets too close to There cubs they also tend to be more aggressive in zoos

It is not safe to approach sloth bears like that, especially mothers with cubs. They kill dozens of people every year in India. Hard to tell whether this was a real encounter or just edited to look like he was close, but not a good example.

Yeah, so that makes for great video opportunities.... *UNTIL* one gets close enough to notice you, and you startle it, and it's less than 10ft away from ripping your chest cavity open
They are popular for tearing people's face off, so yeah don't startle them and stay as far as possible. They are extremely aggressive too.

I saw sloth bear in 2007 at the age of 2. I did know anything about animals. In 2013, when i read about sloth bear, i though it was a fictional animal until 2015. Sloth bear is the most common bear species of India. They are also found in Nepal, Bhutan and Sri Lanka and extinct in Bangladesh.
Had no clue you guys were on TH-cam. I used to watch Zaboomafoo all the time when I was a little kid!

Yup! Like Chris mentioned, tigers will kill and eat sloth bears. It’s a predator with the mindset of prey. They’re also near sighted so they can be easily startled and attack in self defense

Who needs that Disney movie the Jungle Book anyway I rather learn from the real bears instead like Grizzly, Black Bear in North America and Spectacled Bear in Central and South America, Polar Bears in the Arctic, Panda Bears in China. Also theirs Bears in Russia and mostly in Europe and even the Sloth Bear in Asia like India and the Himalayans in Punjab to Arunachal Pradesh. Because it’s no wonder that Disney was taking an inspiration that turn a sloth Bear into a regular bear who dances and sings with a Man cub who was raised by an Indian Wolves or Indian Wild dogs

The bear instinct is to attack under all circumstances. Sloth bear doesn’t know how to run away or be scared. For them being scared means attack, attack now at all cost. Even if they know they will lose. So keep your distance

They are still not adults. Bear cubs grow quickly in size and subadults are nearly the same size as adults. Male cubs are sometimes the same size as their mother which can be misunderstood to be the bears living in packs.

Do you know a sloth bear, man and a leopard are almost same weight. Sloth bear come till 100 kg. Some sloth bears grow till 140 kg but still mist sloth bears they will reach only 100kg. Man will be atleast 80 or 85 something. But even people will reach till 100 kg. And a leopard will be till 70 to 77 kg. So almost 80 kg. Something like 20 kg difference. But still even men will reach 80 kg like that. Even sloth bear may be lesser than 100

As a south Indian, sloth bears used as performing animals, it was common during 1990's. You see guy come with bear infront of your houses , bear perform some tricks, you pay him money. Male solth bears are as big as American brown bears.

Sloth bears are also pound to pound the strongest bears. At just 70-120kg, they go toe to toe even against tigers twice their weight or even more. There is a video of a female sloth bear fending off a dominant male tiger after a long fight.

Fascinating, I saw a video of a "sloth bear" on the NY Post's website. Of course, after Google, I found your informative website, I never knew bears to have a diet of ants. This bear is the "duck billed platypus" of the bear kingdom. It looks like a bear, in fact a koala, acts and hunts like an anteater, and paws resembles a sloth but not in speed. Nature has a funny way of blending creatures that defy the laws of nature.
Sloth bears arent only "black bears", we all know for American black bear, the most iconic animal in america and canada, then we have its close cousin wich does compete with sloth bear in some indian parts, asian black bear much more rarer and much more agressive than their american counterparts, then we have sun bear, the smallest of the bears and completely aboreal and last is spectacled bear, the only bear of south america, the original paddington!
