Thank you for a very thorough description of the service required for my 301. I have just purchased it so a complete service is required. I didn’t know where to start. Now I do!
Thanks for the comment, I appreciate it. You'll love the way the 301 sews. If you have any questions as you go along you know where to find me. Good luck, and take care.

Your honesty, thorough explanations and knowledge are rich as ever as if you had never "been away". It's so wonderful to have a new video from you. All the best my friend and thank you again!
It's true... I'm addicted to these fantastic machines. My wife has been sewing since she was 9 yo, and she says she never had machines that sew so beautifully. It's very rewarding to keep them in good condition and I feel privileged to have such an interesting viewership watching my videos. Thanks for commenting and take care.
Yay Andy Tube is back! Your video's are always thorough and informative. They are very helpful in giving us the knowledge we need to work on our machines. Glad to have you back!

@@kristinjacobsen3417 Now THAT is funny! What a great sense of humor. I wonder if Grandpa did the same to us? It doesn't matter now and I loved it at the time. Thank you, Kristin
So very happy to see a new video from you. I certainly didn't realize how much you have been through, praying for continuing good health for you. You have missed. I can't speak for others, but I have missed. I hope you are able to do more videos ❤.
I was so thrilled to hear your voice again. You have taught me so much. I'm grateful for your patience in teaching me how to maintain my vintage machines. I hope your cancer battle is over. I too am a cancer survivor. If you ever need Chemo again I would love to send you some "chemo" cookies. They really help with the nausea. Thankful for your knowledge from Tucson Az.
Covid cancer and chemo ugh Andy you've been through a lot! I'm so happy to see you 😂pampering Coco again! Thank you for sharing with us when you can. I have my own Coco and she's been making little bits of fabric for applique as well as sewing paper for 'junk journals'. Layering up old sewing pattern tissue paper and sewing up the edges makes a lovely kind of puffy item to work with.
Thank you Andy! Good to hear your voice and see you working. I always learn so much from your videos. Your laugh makes my day! Coco is looking and sounding great. 🦋
I was thrilled to see that you had recently dropped a new video! You're back ! And just in time for me to service my 301 which I sent to the spa along with Coco several years ago. I had so much fun following your instructions and learning about my sewing machine. Appreciate you sharing your knowledge with those of us who love old machines. Hopefully 2023 will be a healthier year for you
Welcome back Andy! So wonderful you are doing well. You have been invaluable to me in keeping my machines in top shape. Thank you so very much for your expertise. Hope to see more of you soon!
Hi Andy! So glad to hear your voice and chuckle again! My fellow veteran friend gave me her Singer 301 and I watched your Original CoCo videos to clean her and get her working for taking her to classes! Thank you!!!
Hi Andy. My Singer 301a is my go to machine. I love how easily the feed dogs can be lowered for free motion quilting. I can do a better job servicing it now because of this video. Thank you so much for sharing your methods and product knowledge.
My wife does not quilt, but I had the pleasure of watching some free motion quilting done at a church bazaar. The two Sewists who were using a 301 were getting all the attention with many asking "what is that machine" and "where can I buy one", haha. Thanks for still watching my channel, and take care.
I can really see now how if one does yearly tune-ups, one may never need to do a complete restoration ever again. If given a check up on a regular basis, one’s machine will be good to go for at least another 70 years! I love how you organize and name the chapters. It was easy to skip around and watch the sections I was most interested in first, and then gradually watch the other sections. Beautiful way how to service the tension unit by soaking it all as one piece in alcohol. And, bathing the needle clamp in alcohol, I like it- keeps the needle clamp from getting all gummed up. Your presentation was clear and interesting. Thank you Andy!
Remember that feeling you had when you finished a restoration and were admiring your beautiful machine? You get that again each year after servicing. 30 minutes of fun and, boom 🌟it is just like you restored it again. Some years you'll need to clean the commutator or adjust the pedals' spring a little depending on usage. I started soaking the needle clamp after a needle did not fall out of the clamp when I loosened the screw. I found it was a little sticky up in the needle port, so a short soaking clears that out. Thanks for the nice comment, Carole. BTW, could you tell I was using my copy of the Electric Flashlight Roger invented? I use it so much! 🔦
@@andytubesewing1953 Yes, I actually did notice you used your Electric Flashlight as I saw it peeking into the view of your camera. I'm very pleased you find it useful!
@@carolemagnusson5044 It's a great tool to have. My neighbor recently made one to hold for her husband while he installed a new garbage disposal. They did use a lighter-weight cord they had and already his brother plans to make one. I guess you guys should have got a patent, hehe.
It's wonderful to have a new video from you, and I hope your health and well-being continue to improve. I thought the video quality was just fine, thorough and unhurried, with good explanations of what you were doing and why. 👍
Andy, I’m female and at least your age, with no husband around to help me care for my sewing machines. But, that’s when you come her on your detailed videos to help instruct us on the importance of knowing all that you teach us here. We are SO happy you are now back to share your much needed talent with us. 👏👏😻
Greetings Andy, Thank you, So much learned. In two days my wife and I will drive 75 miles to get a 1962 Singer 328K being sold by a collector. It is good looking in photos with many accessories and manuals. When my father sold household appliances in the middle 1950's he often had a demo sewing machine that I would practice making pot holders. Today my wife and I are making rope bowls and other items. This Singer machine is for me, as she has adopted my Husqvarna 250 But there is no replacing for me any minute of this teaching. With many others I extend my prayer, for your health in grace and peace in your home.
Thanks for the prayers; complete payback for making my videos. 🙏 You'll enjoy that 328K I imagine. A strong and versatile machine. I had to Google "rope bowls" 😃A fun project I imagine, although I can even sew a straight seam, haha. If you'd care to have some documents for your 328K (factory manuals) drop me a line at andytube53@gmail.com and mention the model number. Thanks for watching and for your very kind comment.
My husband's grandma just gave me this machine and it was SO dirty. I didn't know where to start. You're video was so helpful, the machine is now very clean and runs so smooth!
What a fabulous gift! It's an incredible machine. When I offered any vintage Singer to my wife who's been sewing for almost 60 years model 301A is what she wanted. If you have questions in the future about it do not hesitate to ask. So happy for you. Happy sewing.
Gee it is good to see you back. Have missed you hope you are going okay. Have stopped fixing my machines as I have been too busy. I have acquired 3 more machines so will be back on the repair trail soon. You being back gives me the push. Look after your self you are a special man. Tricia your friends from Australia.
Thank you, Tricia. Yes, it's time for you to get back to the workbench and rescue those machines. Thank you for saving them, and for your kind thoughts/words.🙏
Oh -- this is wonderful Andy! I was already having a brilliant day and then this popped up for me to watch. It's lovely to see and hear you again, and lovely to get reacquainted with Coco too. I think you've just give all of us as much of a special treat as you just gave her. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this for us! It was absolutely worth the little wait and, for the second time today, I find myself chuffed to bits by a delightful surprise. (And even more chuffed that you felt well enough and had the energy to do it.)
Dear Andy, sew, glad to see you again! You were not too rusty, I enjoy your through explanations. Prayers for your improving health. As a 75 year old female, I want to give you a caution about what not to do. I had just purchased new glasses, and my Cocoa was getting a bit loud, so I grabbed my oil to give her a drink. Somehow, with my new glasses, I managed to oil the needle shaft. You can only imagine my dismay as the needle slipped out into my fabric. It took several times of this occurring before I figured out my mistake! And I only use my reading glasses to oil my machine now. If I may ask a question, my screw that attaches my presser foot to my machine will not tighten enough, and my foot drops off. I have replaced the screw, so it appears the hole is too big. Now, if it were a wood screw, I would glue part of a tooth pick in the hole, and the screw tightens right down, but I know that is not an option. I have used hot glue to fasten the foot, but that only works for a brief time. Thank you in advance for your help. You made my Saturday morning by posting a video today!😊
Central Michigan Sewing Supply has replacement screws for your presser foot. The material of the screw is softer than the needle bar so they generally go first. They're cheap so even if it's not the screw, you're not out a lot of money. My Singer 404 had the same thing and a new screw fixed it.
Thank you very much, Faith. I think it would be best to replace the presser bar. I thought about using something like JBWeld Steel to permanently attach the foot, but if the presser bar was ever damaged you'd need to cut it in half to remove it. You can find used presser bars for model 301A on sites like eBay, and others. Here are a couple on eBay I found right away. www.ebay.com/itm/374040920274?hash=item57169380d2:g:l7UAAOSwjzBiZpE- and another (see #14 in the drop-down menu of part numbers) www.ebay.com/itm/374040920274?hash=item57169380d2:g:l7UAAOSwjzBiZpE- For less than $20 you can get a replacement bar. I have a video about how to install the bar back into the machine and set it at the correct height: th-cam.com/video/qC1rRqLvk3k/w-d-xo.html I don't know how comfortable you are with that kind of work, but even a family member or friend can just follow my video. Normally the screw would wear before the hole on the presser bar, but I have also had the problem of the screw hole being damaged or enlarged. I wrapped thread around the screw threads and reinstalled it, but it eventually works loose, and always at the worst moment. Replacing the bar would get you back to sewing instead of fussing around with the foot. Thanks again for the nice comment, and good luck
Andy, it's been a while since I wrote to you. I wanted to tell you, I pulled out my Singer 1591 to do some sewing, right away my Tension Assembly was out of wack! I went to your video and fixed it; then I got a rats-nest, had to remove faceplate, then the Shuttle, forgot how to get the Shuttle back in, Again, I went to your video and got the Shuttle back in. I can't Thank you enough! Your Great! Thank you, and God Bless!
Someone on one of the vintage FB groups announced your return to much joy from everyone. What a nice surprise for your wife on her return. A beautifully maintained machine that runs like new. From this video I learned that I haven't been oiling the right holes on the front and bottom of my 301s so thanks for that. I was missing some entirely and oiling in holes that didn't need it at all. I like to put one of your vids on and follow what you do. Sometimes I put a random one on while I'm sewing because you give so much information in your side commentary. It's so interesting to learn what the parts are called and what they do. Just wanted to tell you that your fans are so happy you're back.
I'm still learning about the machines myself. It seems I always find something new about it when I work on it again. So glad you watched this video and those vertical shaft bushings will be happy to get a little oil now. It's nice that you like the terminology and names. Some of my friends said it was a waste of time, but I enjoy Singer's naming system. With hundreds of parts on a machine and thousands in inventory, they had to keep track somehow. You can just keep saying "Hey, toss me one of those dealy bobs" or "Boss, I need another crate of thing-a-ma jigs" I've always wondered whose job it was to come up with the names. I think they had a sense of humor when they use a 5-word name on a tiny set screw, haha. I so appreciate you watching my channel over the years. GB and take care.
Good information is never a waste of time. Also I like telling people that I adjusted the bight amplitude screw to realign the needle assembly all by myself. Especially the friends who have computer machines that quit, give error messages, and have to be taken to a $ervice shop to get them going again. Singer 301s rock!!!
@@marindamartin3535 ""Good information is never a waste of time..."" I could not agree more. Knowledge is a wonderful and powerful thing. I like to see yur friend face when you say that about the bight amplitude screw, haha. Priceless.
So glad that you are feeling better!! I am in love with you videos! I recently found a 401A that was not functioning. Thanks to your videos, she is up and running again. Now that i know she runs, i am going back through the deep cleaning videos. I love your personality, attention to detail, and love for these machines....now i just have to come up with a name for mine. Thank you again! Your videos are fabulous!!
What a nice comment. Thank you very much and thanks for rescuing that 401A I bet you're going to really enjoy that slantomatic and it will let you know it's name before too long. Take care and thanks for watching my channel
The best tutorial ever! Thank you and prayers for your health. God Bless. And yes I subscribed. I’m just learning this utube stuff. I love my old sewing machines.
Thank you very much. I have almost 600 videos for vintage Singer machines. Playlists by model number and by part of the machine, like motor, needle bar, etc. www.youtube.com/@andytubesewing1953/playlists Nice of you to subscribe and I appreciate it.
Great to see you, thank you so much for all the vids. I dont have a 301, but one can allways learn something new. All my machines are serviced and in good working order thnx to you. the 201 401 and 431 are all ready to be used. i would have liked to use grease with molybdenum powder, but man that stuff makes a mess so it is a no-no I prefer to use technical gasoline to clean away oil and grease, but need to be careful with some plastisc, i use since i already got it while working with cars. There is no need to clean commutator from that graphite stuff only clean the space between is full of it that needs to be cleaned thats how i was taught when working with turbines, since the graphite also works as a lubricant as well as a making a better connection, the problem is when graphite get between in the spaces it creates an electric bridge and current doenst go the "right" way between 2 points thats why motor loses power because current can flow thruu more points which causes a braking field instead of a driving one. We were also taught to put fine grained sandpaper rough side to the carbons and make it the same radius as the commutator, this can be a bit tricky with smaller motors since there is no space where to put a sandpaper. i sure didnt know about the handwhel having cussioning but i am surely going to have a looksie at it.
I thought there was a Mica divider between the copper contacts on the commutator? The original Singer repairmen told me they used a type of eraser to clean off the excess carbon deposits on the commutator to provide better contact and increase the power of the motor, go figure. I bet the technical gas works well. It's just too volatile for me. How do you dispose of the used leftover? Here is one video showing the insides of a handwheel for the 15-91. th-cam.com/video/yECdUWx1eco/w-d-xo.html The service manual for the 401 class machines has a nice diagram with instructions for dismantling on page 150. The manual is available for free to anyone at this link: sewingdude.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/singer-401-service-manual1.pdf Thanks for keeping your machines running, and for watching my channel.
@@andytubesewing1953 come to mind there could also be that isolation material comes up to the level of copper and when carbon keeps building up on that space it alse creates bridge between the "poles" it becomes the same issue where current flows the wrong ways an less current goes the right way it get less power to drive the motor as well as it can create "breaking" fields.
The diamond stone is called a "brush seater". So along with seating the brushes, it cleans the commutator. It's very aggressive so don't use it a lot and don't press hard on the commutator. When you install new brushes or get them in the wrong holder you can hear the speed pick up as you use it.
Thank you so much for an amazingly detailed video. Glad you are feeling stronger. If you consider requests for future videos, could you please do an annual tune-up video for Singer Stylist 774 or 775 please? (I have both.) Appreciate you sharing your expertise on these vintage machines.
Oh Andy I am so happy to hear your voice! I have missed you and worried about you. I check your channel off and on and It made my day to find this recent video. God bless you and thank you I have learned so much from you these past years. ❤
Thanks for the new video Andy. Very interesting and informative as usual. And best of all, you felt well enough to make it. It's kind of nice to work on a machine you've previously maintained so you can see how effective your work was. I haven't done that yet. You've mentioned in previous videos that your wife is always concerned about the tension on her machines so I can understand why you removed and cleaned the tension unit as a component instead of disassembling it. Happy wife, happy life.
thank you, friend. It took a few days, but I did enjoy it. I do hope you get to service a machine you once restored. It's like a double pleasure. Oh yes, absolutely correct, happy wife, happy life. When she finds out I serviced it again the first thing she will do is sew scraps to test the needle thread tension, haha. So far I have passed all the tests.
Great timing. I just acquired a 301a a week ago and this video took me through the whole process of getting it checked out and back in service after setting for 20 years or more. I thank you very much for sharing your experience with us.
Congratulations on your acquisition! It's truly a marvelous machine and I'm glad that you found my video helpful. Thank you for the nice comment and happy sewing!
So glad you are back. Will keep you in my prayers. You definately are the best!! Working on a 301 and having issues with the wheel and clutch. I got the knob back on but doubt if there will be any bobbin winding. seems like it may be stripped a tad. She has a broken vertical rod next to the the vertical fork. I havent named her yet.... Im thinking Bea because she is being such a brat with one issue after another!! again, welcome back>
thank you. I know I'm slow to reply, but try turning over (front to back) the clutch washer of the handwheel. The "vertical fork" is called the "Forked Feed Connection", part #170045. The vertical shaft next to it (left) is called the "Feed Lifting Rock Shaft", part # 170051, It can be hard to find b/c most sellers do not strip the machine that far, but amazingly here is a seller with a (very) large number of parts being actioned with 24 hours to go right now, and the top bid is only $21 for the whole bunch of parts. If I was still working on machines I buy this in a heart beat. www.ebay.com/itm/155524859498?hash=item243601066a:g:juIAAOSwy7tj~kn6

Hopefully 2023 will be a healthier year for you
Hopefully so, a better year. Thank you for keeping your 301 in service, Deva. We share the feeling of fun to work on them.
So happy to have to back, thank you~~~~
Thanks very much, Maja 🙏
How lovely to hear your soothing and reassuring foldout tones Andy. Lovely too that you are well enough to share with us again. You’re the best.
You are very kind, Moira. Thank you very much 🙏
It's so nice to see you uploading again Andy and I'm very happy to know you are feeling better.
Thanks very much, Donna. ⭐
Wonderful to have you back! Thank you so much for the video and you didn't seem rusty at all!
It was fun to finally make another video. Thanks for the nice comment.
sew glad to have you back! i just found a black 301a thrifting yesterday, so i’m going to get him cleaned up with you! 🖤
The black ones are from the first year. Very nice to look at. Good luck, and thanks for watching.
Thank you! Welcome back!! Sending healing prayers!!!
I gratefully accept al the prays you so kindly send my way, and thank you very much.
Welcome back Andy! So wonderful you are doing well. You have been invaluable to me in keeping my machines in top shape. Thank you so very much for your expertise. Hope to see more of you soon!
Thanks very much and thank you for keeping those machines in service.
Hi Andy! So glad to hear your voice and chuckle again! My fellow veteran friend gave me her Singer 301 and I watched your Original CoCo videos to clean her and get her working for taking her to classes! Thank you!!!
What a generous friend. Thanks for keeping your machine in service, Pat, and for the nice comment. Happy sewing.
Oh no! I am sad to hear that you've not been well! But happy that you're feeling better and that you've made another video for us! 😍
Thanks for watching it, and the kind words are appreciated.
Thank you for posting this! I’ve been looking for a good, go-to resource for 301 annual tune-ups. And it’s so nice to hear your voice.
thanks very much, Scott. Maybe a spring tune-up is in the near future? Have fun I hope.
Thank God you are back!!!@😂😂😂😂😂😊😊😊😊❤❤❤❤❤❤
For sure, I am thankful. Thank you, Mamie. ⭐
Thanks very much 🙏
Andy, I’m female and at least your age, with no husband around to help me care for my sewing machines. But, that’s when you come her on your detailed videos to help instruct us on the importance of knowing all that you teach us here. We are SO happy you are now back to share your much needed talent with us. 👏👏😻
Thanks for the nice comment, Vicki, and for keeping your machines in service.
This Singer machine is for me, as she has adopted my Husqvarna 250
But there is no replacing for me any minute of this teaching.
Always a pleasure to listen and watch Andy...bless you my friend
Thank you very much, Gary
My husband's grandma just gave me this machine and it was SO dirty. I didn't know where to start. You're video was so helpful, the machine is now very clean and runs so smooth!
What a fabulous gift! It's an incredible machine. When I offered any vintage Singer to my wife who's been sewing for almost 60 years model 301A is what she wanted. If you have questions in the future about it do not hesitate to ask. So happy for you. Happy sewing.
Welcome back! You have been missed! Thanks for sharing your knowledge on these wonderful machines. ❤
🙂
God bless you, Andy. From Romania.
Yes, Please, and thank you. Carol. I had a great teacher by that name. She said it means "joyful song". Very nice, like you. 😊
Brilliant days are a blessing for all of us. Thanks for the wonderful comment, Megan. I'm smiling so much now. Take care.
Wow so awesome to hear your voice again and see you are back in action with your very informative videos. It is much appreciated
Thank you, Keith 🙏
Are you kidding me buddy? We are so very HAPPY to see you back! You be YOU! Lotsa love!
Such a nice comment, Sharri! Thanks for the love 💖
It is great to have you back, even if it is just for a bit. Hope the best. And thank you for all the videos.
Tine has become relative and I'm happy I made the video. Thanks for watching.
So good to see your post! I need to do this for a very deserving 301a I know. Thank you so very much 👍🏼❤️
Thanks! I found it rewarding and relaxing at the same time.
I have a video about how to install the bar back into the machine and set it at the correct height: th-cam.com/video/qC1rRqLvk3k/w-d-xo.html
I don't know how comfortable you are with that kind of work, but even a family member or friend can just follow my video.
Thanks, Andy! It was so good seeing you again. I always learn something from you and have little chuckles along the way!💅❤❤❤
thanks for a very nice comment. take care.
So glad your doing better and love watching your videos!
Thank you very much, Fran ⭐
Andy, it's been a while since I wrote to you. I wanted to tell you, I pulled out my Singer 1591 to do some sewing, right away my Tension Assembly was out of wack! I went to your video and fixed it; then I got a rats-nest, had to remove faceplate, then the Shuttle, forgot how to get the Shuttle back in, Again, I went to your video and got the Shuttle back in. I can't Thank you enough! Your Great! Thank you, and God Bless!
Thanks for the blessings. I'm glad you remember my channel and it is always rewarding to hear a video help a viewer, so thanks for the nice comment.
Happy to watch you again 😊😊😊😊 god bless
Thank you, Linda 🙏
Glad to have you back, Andy :-)
Hi, Max. Thanks you very much.
Priceless.
So good to see you posting again. It’s a good reminder to give my 401 some attention and cleaning.
Thank you very much Pat. I appreciate you still watching my channel 😀
So glad to see you back! We missed you and appreciate you! Best wishes.
Thank you 🙏
So glad that you are feeling better!!
Delighted to see you're back! Great timing, because I need to do a checkup on my 301, Brownie.
Thanks for watching, Paula, and regards to "Brownie" 😊

The best tutorial ever! Thank you and prayers for your health. God Bless. And yes I subscribed. I’m just learning this utube stuff. I love my old sewing machines.
Thank you very much. I have almost 600 videos for vintage Singer machines. Playlists by model number and by part of the machine, like motor, needle bar, etc. www.youtube.com/@andytubesewing1953/playlists Nice of you to subscribe and I appreciate it.
thank-you Andy!!
You know it's been my pleasure and thanks for watching.
Great to see you, thank you so much for all the vids. I dont have a 301, but one can allways learn something new. All my machines are serviced and in good working order thnx to you. the 201 401 and 431 are all ready to be used.
i would have liked to use grease with molybdenum powder, but man that stuff makes a mess so it is a no-no
I prefer to use technical gasoline to clean away oil and grease, but need to be careful with some plastisc, i use since i already got it while working with cars.
The manual is available for free to anyone at this link:
sewingdude.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/singer-401-service-manual1.pdf Thanks for keeping your machines running, and for watching my channel.
(I have both.) Appreciate you sharing your expertise on these vintage machines.
thanks for watching. I don't have either of those models so can't help you out with any video, sorry.
Oh Andy I am so happy to hear your voice! I have missed you and worried about you. I check your channel off and on and It made my day to find this recent video. God bless you and thank you I have learned so much from you these past years. ❤

Your videos are great. Thank you so much for your detailed instructions.
Thanks for taking time to comment, and for watching my channel, Shelly
Welcome back. It's good to see you back!
Hey, thanks JR. I appreciate you watching.
