Love you mentioned the Jiang parents - the confusion around What was Up with Them really does both further the themes of the plot and provide the cracks that impact their children long after they are dead.
Their whole backstory is so intriging, I feel like they could have a whole book on their own!! It takes so much complexity to make characters so imperfect but compelling with so little screen time. They stress me out big time- every time they fought in front of JC you could see the childhood trauma triple I stg😭

WAHHH THIS IS SO UNDERRATED!!!! this is a great first video, holy crud!!! I've just recently gotten into MDZS and the thing that caught my attention the most in the beginning was the rumor mill. Hell, WWX makes pretty scathing commentary on how quickly opinions will change, too, based just on group mentality and face-value information that, while isn't untrue, also doesn't allow for nearly enough context or nuance that actually existed. It's really fascinating, and I think its so cool that MXTX has apparently had this as a theme in all of her books.

the rumor mill is such an interesting theme in all mxtx’s works, yet her approach is also slightly different each time, as you mentioned. i love your example of jiang cheng’s parents, i never thought of how mxtx basically turned her own audience into a rumour mill too…. she’s truly a genius. i also love the svsss example too, it’s seems so obvious now that you point it out. i’m also rereading tgcf right now and the idea of the believers having so much power is soo real, especially when the book illustrates this with xielian’s rise and fall in his backstory. the switch up of public opinion on him was tough to witness 😢
