  • I'm back out with the Yorkshire Bandits this week for the 9th club match fishing the River Don on the Rotherham & District UAF stretch at Sprotbrough.
    The last time we fished here it was a tough day for most and the early pegs above the canal mouth dominated with bream on the feeder.
    Having kept an eye on the match results the club made the decision to take a longer walk up the river to where some good weights had been reported.
    I setup a whip, a bolo a slider and a feeder rod to cover my bases on the day.
    Would it be feeder fishing for bream, or whip fishing for roach? Only one way to find out so grab a cuppa and settle in for another hour long match fishing VLOG 😉

      I worked at The Ickles until 1987 and it was getting cleaner back then but it changed colour regularly depending who was flushing out further upstream.

    Im starting to see your confidence levels starting to rise John you fished a good match in my opinion you caught plenty of fish all that's missing is the couple of bonus fish that you need to get you the results you deserve.your luck is slowly but surely begining to change .keep smiling m8.

      Don't worry Nico, the following day I won a winter league match, didn't video it as setup time was less than an hour but I caught 72 tiny roach and perch on the pole feeding pinkie and a dark groundbait with lean to form a cloud in crystal clear water for 4lb 12oz which was more than enough on the day. 👍🎣

      Wow, I feel honoured to be on the same viewing playlist as a 5 time world champion 😉👍 I'm glad you get some value out of the vids Keith, that's what it's all about. I love fishing the bolo - we have so many deep rivers around and its a great way to search the peg and such an easy thing to control. I generally use the no.5' DH bolos on the Don unless it's up and pulling harder, then the no.2 or a preston bolo would be my choice. Don't go too light on them though, I stopped using anything less than 3g anywhere now as the casting range is too limited and once dotted down, I'm not sure it matters.

    Thanks John , I fish acolyte 17 and 15 plus float rods on stick float but see a pattern in your match fishing with the whip , definitely adding an acolyte whip now as I fish the sprotborough Don and apart from the feeder value all the options , cheers again

    • @HOOKEDFishingChannel
      @HOOKEDFishingChannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I had the 17ft acolyte setup with a 4g bolo but didn't use it, if the wind had been upstream then it may have played a part but it wasn't so the waggler when it got wild but the whip was the method to be on on the day, it's just so much faster if the fish will sit high enough in the swim. The feeder was slow by comparison but sometimes it'll sort out those bream and last time I fished sprot it was the only method I could really catch on and it was a perch day. You just never know what you'll face.

      Thanks Mike 👍, I suspect they were there, seemed like they were right across the river, but I only had 20 mins on the tip. Clive had some big skimmers in his net on the whip and employed the same strategy as me, first 20 on the feeder 🤷‍♂️

      @HOOKEDFishingChannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks👍, I was fishing beyond it maybe by 3m, with me sat out in the water, this would have been about a 12m pole line from the bank.

  • @keithatacktv2085
    @keithatacktv2085 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great channel mate ... what length whip would you advise on rivers like the Don ? Thanks 🙏

    • @HOOKEDFishingChannel
      @HOOKEDFishingChannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I own 8m whips, there are 10's out there and they have their uses in certain situations but I haven't found a need to fish longer than 8m to hand anywhere, it takes some practice and when you're bagging if you're not used to it you may find your wrist aches from all the casting, the longer/heavier the whip, the worse this will be. The drennan acolyte pro 8m is exceptional value for money - very light piece of kit. The best are probably the browning sphere and the daiwa air but they are twice the price and then some at 8m and even more at 10m. I would say the 10m whips would be useful if fished on a short line like a short pole in windy conditions as the profile is slimmer but for line to hand fishing, I find 8m is enough in Yorkshire.

      Haha 😂 Nice 1 Martin. Quite honestly Clive played a blinder, very similar tactics/approach, the difference being he found some big skimmers. I was genuinely happy for the lad, he’s a great guy and deserved a win, as you know, it’s not easy with the talent we have within the club. I knew my target for the day was 20lb, probably needed another 40 fish as the quality was 2-4oz every fish at the back end of the day but the wind meant I was having to time casts between gusts to avoid getting blown back into the line where the snag took my first rig. It was a great day none the less and on Sunday I followed it up with a win on a pond in a winter league series, happy days😃

    If you check the sinking rate of maggots John and I think you'll find you were probably feeding too far downstream.

    • @HOOKEDFishingChannel
      @HOOKEDFishingChannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I take your pont Dave but it was slow flowing and I could cast further down if needed, I'd have made the adjustment if I noticed the fish dropping down, but they didn't, it was solid from start to finish.

    • @davetaylor8858
      @davetaylor8858 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HOOKEDFishingChannel I noticed the "killing zone" was about where you'd fed your groundbait at the start. Fresh, clean maggots sink at approx 6 seconds per foot so in 14' of water it would have taken them 84 seconds to hit bottom by which time they'd have been well downstream of the "Killing Zone". Try feeding further upstream next time. Another good video by the way. Your editing skills are really coming on.

    • @HOOKEDFishingChannel
      @HOOKEDFishingChannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@davetaylor8858I totally get what you're saying bud but the camera angles are very deceptive. I caught a further 50 fish after I turned the camera off and they were bang under the float, the bites were coming as soon as it went in and settled. The only reason the catch rate slowed was due to me not being able to cast effectively in the gusting wind, at times I had to hang on to the whip double handed, and wait to make my cast which gives you an idea how strong it was gusting. Thanks for watching and your comments. 👍🎣
