Initially when I created an add-on domain it created a new root folder and I was advised to use an alias instead. I had a few files to update after running the string locator but managed to do them as bulk changes. Great tutorial that really works!

Hi, yes, if you have re-directed all old page URL's from olddomain.com to the equivalents on newdomain.com - then you should remove the content from the old site, as you're right, it'll be duplicate content and won't be any good. You should make sure you change the URL in Analytics and Google Search Console as well, and why not re-submit your new sitemap to Google Search Console too, as this will help speed things up. (Apologies for the delay in replying, your comment got classes as spam because it contained a domain name - albeit an example one!). Sam.

Hi, you need to make sure your domain is correctly pointing to your server - you might need to contact your hosting company to help you with this, or double check the settings within your domain control panel. If you ping both URLS (new and old), they *should* resolve to the same IP. You can do this in Windows by loading up a Terminal/Run screen and typing in "ping www.websiteaddress.com"

Didn't work for me, the first step itself. Upon changing the references in DB throws a 404 error. Any idea what could be the reason?

I would recommend backing up the database yep, but the files will be exactly the same, so no need to backup those.
