      @@Thesignalpath Of course, and I am actually glad that you didn’t have to put much effort into this one. I know how frustrating it is to track down a fault for hours while trying to record the whole process.

    What a great buy! This had to be some corporate meter, where the moment it stopped working the user just returned it to the stockroom and got out another without ever even looking for possible simple problems.

    • @hernancoronel
      @hernancoronel ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah totally! The user might have even detected the problem but wanted to have a brand new one so he asked for it and this one went to the discard pile…

    Looks a bit like the previous owner broke the battery contact right after getting the device calibrated. 😂But why didn't he just stuff some balled up aluminum foil into the gap tho? 🤔

    • @jenda386
      @jenda386 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's exactly what I did when my second hand Fluke 189 battery spring broke. Previous owner had some alkaline cells leak in there which weakened the spring.

    It's important! Previous owner has installed 11A fuse in the place of 400ma. 789 should have both fuses rated to 440mA. I suggest you to replace fuse ASAP

    • @perhansson6718
      @perhansson6718 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Thesignalpath The root cause for the meter dying when measuring its own battery is that the COM jack in most multimeters is not connected to battery ground, but instead an analog ground at another potential, so when the COM lead is connected to the battery this shorts out the analog ground, most likely killing the ASIC chip, or if you are lucky just the voltage regulators. This is similar to hooking up a grounded mains oscilloscope ground clip to an arbitrary voltage source, things go *boom*

    My wife did design work on the 789 so she got to keep one. She watched this vid and accused me of blowing it up while I was troubleshooting a microwave oven that I burned popcorn in. I don't believe it was the 789 that I blew up. I blew up one of her other meters.

    Nice repair, try to apply silicon from inside to seal the battery holder, so if any battery leak it didn't damage the pcb.

    • @theovannieuwenhuizen5756
      @theovannieuwenhuizen5756 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Silicone is not a very good idea with metal. A good polymer sealant will work better and is safe to use on metals.

      I noticed the fuse also. I popped one of the two fuses in my 89 IV. Different meter, but each fuse is different and they fit their respective holder well. That one fuse looks longer that the space provided by the holder. Not like Fluke to be sloppy about spacing. Nice find!

    The Fluke 789 PrceossMeter I have used and watched interment tech in setting up Industrial valve's controllers, level indicators, flow meters, pressure indictors large industrial fans controllers. a process signal is 4 to 20 ma. The signal can run vary long distances (500m or 1640') and be very accurate and immune to electrical noise almost all industry uses this setup. In valves and controllers, the 4 to 20 ma is converted to a air signal of 3 to 15 psi. I work with industrial boiler and cogeneration for 42 yr.

      Same reason why most car collectors buy up crappy cars and fix them up. The only way to practice diagnosing and fixing an issue in a complex system like a modern electronic device or a car, is to find examples with issues and attempt to fix them.
