However, it's more about Nishiki because a) in the first game Haruka wasnt quite close and dear to Kiryu yet - for the majority of the game he's protecting her because it's just the right thing to do, not because she's Yumi's daughter or because they have any truly personal connection (that one gets forged only at the very end); b) technically Kiryu wasn't under oath when he was protecting Haruka - remember that he was expelled during his prison sentence; c) "there is no way to return to the past", that line is the crux of specificually Kiryu's drama in the game, not Haruka's, and it's something he says to Nishiki word-for-word.

Could it be that Japanese now have more access to Western culture through the internet? Could it be that they are adopting more of Western culture?
