  • Are inexpensive value brushes really a value or total trash? What about really expensive brushes? Does the price make a huge difference? Sometimes. Sometimes not. Let's compare two brands on opposite ends of the spectrum shall we.

    I know Tracy and have a few of his brushes. We traded at a show a few years ago and he got one of my watercolor bowls. So it was great that you showed my bowls as well! I also have his uncle Keith Lebezon’s brushes as well. Great review too! Thanks..

    The postings for this video are so funny and upbeat! While I hate to play the blame game, I have to. Steve is responsible for my buying quality paints, paper and brushes. Not just for myself, but for my grandchildren ages 2 to 7! It is amazing how they enjoy painting when they are able to see nice results because the are using materials that they have better control over. Even Crayola paints work so much better using a brush that doesn’t come with the set of pans (I actually throw those away) I teach them to use the brushes gently and they love using a variety of sizes. So I guess I am thankful to Steve for his informative videos.

      I feel no shame, stockpiling Kolinskies for years! I've an unusual situation, in that I used to blow the bellies on my beloved Strathmores! I had to learn that the brush cleaner/preservative was ripping the hairs off at the ferule! I've long since switched to my current shampoo & leave-in conditioner. Hairs stopped coming out. I treat the leave-in conditioner, like sizing - I can reshape the brush, as it dries, pull water out, replace w/conditioner. Then if I need to transport delicate brushes, I cut different widths of straws, to slip over the tops. I also have a metal brush box, which holds probably 16 Kolinskies for me, THESE are my inking ones, and no one better touch that box! I have counted up the value, mostly on my Watercolor brushes, then oil brushes, acrylic brushes. I could buy a decent used car, ZOMG!

    I love companies/individuals that are able to make such outstanding quality, and with a matching mindset. Not pure for profit, but to offer a helpful product. Brushmaking in itself on an art-level, to give an artist the feel and touch of mastery.
    Excellent review too, it gives that first grade feeling a Lebenzon requires imho.

    Opinion of one:
    My first "real" (read: not a child's toy) watercolor brush set was the ZenArt Tulips. I found them difficult to learn with, and nearly gave up watercolor as a result. Now that I've tried a variety of different brushes and have a better understanding of how to use water and work quickly with different papers, I sometimes prefer the Tulips for specific purposes.
    I don't recommend these to beginners, despite their price point, because of their limited water holding capacity and stiff texture. It will be difficult to get satisfying, encouraging results unless you already have some basic experience with watercolor.

    • @Telindra
      @Telindra 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      As pretty much still a beginner myself, that got the hands upon a pure squirrel brush just recently, had I known the extreme difference between real high quality brushes and most decent synthetic brushes from the beginning? I'd save myself the money I spent on the synthetics and go for the high quality right away. It really IS so much more encouraging and enjoyable to paint with. I did 98% of the entire painting that first time with the pure squirrel. Absolutely amazed of all it could do, and how all of a sudden not difficult it felt like.
      With watercolor I would like to say go for the high quality immediately. Don't touch any other paper than 100% cotton, pref no less than 140lb. Go for the professional artist grade tube paints (you only need a handfull to start with, as you can mix new colors from them) and get 1-2 high quality brushes. Man, had I done that, I would've saved myself so much money and so much frustration.

    • @bmedley9627

      @@Telindra I totally agree. The cheaper is money wasted. The same goes for paint. Better quality gives better results.

    I’m really glad that you made this video on this very subject. As a beginner I bought a $30 set of watercolor brushes, along with the variety set of waterbrushes (that hold water inside). Out of curiosity sake, I even made a variety of homemade watercolor brushes for me from bamboo grown in my yard and used some of my own hair. I still have yet to use the brushes I made but it was a great 😊 and uniquely fun project.

    I have those Zen brushes. I've been using them with mixed media where I needed more control when doing and ink and acrylic ink underpainting. It's also the only rigger I have and it works when I need a rigger. They don't lose hairs, something cheap brushes do sometimes. But didn't want to use my good watercolor brushes for this art and they fit the bill.

    Aha! I knew R2 was in your studio someplace! I have now alot of brushes since my mom gave me my dads old collection of brushes, and i find the ones that are best are ones dad used.....but i could be biased. Love my new neptunes especially, even though dad never used them. I used to use only a pencil box full of teeny brushes and do watercolor mostly without alot of water and controlled dry brush only and on bad paper. It was fun, but i was more comfortable with pencil. Now you are teaching me to use some water in my watercolor and it is a whole new medium to me! I am overwhelmed and lost and yet enjoying my journey.

I am always trying something new and different after watching some of my favourite TH-cam teachers. Loved this video. Thank you for comparing and how you present the idea of the comparison. Really appreciate how Levinson is going down the repurpose and cruelty free route. Those thin lines of the silver fox really drew me in. I would always think of an overdressed matron with that fox draped around her if I used it...but oh those thin lines. Whiskers and eye lashes....

    My only issue with brushes advertised as "all purpose" is that they may be good at doing a lot of different things, they almost never do any of those things amazingly. Maybe I'm just a bit picky, but I prefer to use high-quality brushes designed for their medium or purpose. The downside to that is that it tends to be more costly buying brushes this way.

    Love this video. I have seen somewhat more than a handful of videos talking about these brushes. I like your video best. I like the information you share about each brush. It is a nice selection of brushes both in fiber and size. Your review of what it feels like to use the brush and the brush's behavior is exactly the kind of information I want to know when I am not able to see it in person. The topper on the excellent review is your explanation that this is a luxury item. A very desirable luxury item that anyone would be delighted to own. I came away thinking wow that is a very nice to have luxury item. Further if I can afford I would love to have it.
    All of the other video I watched were different. At the end of the video I felt that these brushes were essential to producing quality art. They may never have used those words; but it was in my head nevertheless.

    Well here’s to you Steve! I could never pull the trigger on real Kolinsky brushes so I doubt that I will ever buy one of these Luxury brushes. I remember my first watercolor class, the teacher said that the “LeMer” company has come out with a squirrel hair brush one of the first mass produced squirrel brushes and they rival the Kolinsky brushes! I bought 4 of these brushes and I still have 2 of them! I believe that a person can spend more money than is ever needed on a good or even great quality brush. The term more money than sense springs to my mind, I believe $50.00 is to much for an individual brush but perhaps I am a reverse snob? I know that you are sent many brushes to review and I applaud your restraint, I believe that you could have 10 times as many brushes you featured in your opening! I do envy your mottlers, but then again I have so few of them just now! Sweet review and I hope you feature a few in a future video and painting soon.

    I’ve been looking for a good brush for fine detail. I’m thinking I’m going to have to get one of these. I live in an area in the United States where we hunt every fall and fill our freezers up with the meat to feed our families through the winter. An elk will feed a family for a year. It is not a cruelty but a necessity to sustain us during the winter months. I’m wondering what the difference is between a Siberian elk and the elk in the U.S.? We also have a neighbor that raises goats. The milk from the goats is used for babies that struggle with formula. I’ve not seen silver fox here but we do have red fox. Anyway, the brushes are fascinating. I’m thinking maybe I need to try them.

      So true about paper. For mixed media, when I use paper, I use smooth Bristol. For watercolor, always 100% cotton such as Arches, Stonehenge or Fabriano. I want to try Hahnemulhe and Canson Heritage. For brushes, I love Princeton Neptune brushes. I bought mine one brush at a time - they are not over priced! To me, they are within my low budget range. However, I recently bought a set of Mimik for a little variety. They're recommended by Lindsay, "The Frugal Crafter" if you want a set and at a reasonable price but I haven't tried them yet. She uses hers quite often.

    LOL. Oh my goodness you have a LOT of brushes! I couldn't stop laughing. Actually, based upon watching one of your other videos I bought a few of the Silver Black Velvet brushes. Before that, when I first thought I would want to do watercolor I made the mistake of picking up a packet of watercolor brushes at Walmart and they were so awful, I don't even think a kid would like using them. Then I picked up a few Princeton brushes at Michaels -- not bad; I like them... I mean they are amazing compared to those Walmart ones. LOL. I also have one 14 round Utrecht brush from Blick that I like. . . and a flat goat hair brush and a calligraphy brush from another TH-cam teacher's site. That's all I know from brushes. I know you really like the Silver Black Velvets and I do, but it doesn't seem easy to me to get water into them for doing washes. Is that just me? Probably, since I am a beginner! LOL

Ugh, too stiff, didn't hold much water, and what it did hold it dumped almost immediately on first contact. They are pretty but pretty useless for watercolor. They may work for acrylic or oil glazing.

    Have you tried the Raphael synthetic squirrel quill brushes? I can't say from experience because I have no idea what real squirrel feels like but it definitely doesn't feel like my other synthetics. If so, what are your opinions on that brush line?

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've not used Raphael much, but they usually have a good reputation. Real squirrel is very fine and somewhat limp but holds a lot of water. They make good mops but not as good all-purpose brushes. The synthetic squirrel is usually stiffer but designed to do the same thing.
