Excellent. We often just don’t think things through and this Priest made me realise that. For example, our eyes absorb information in details, but they can’t taste or hear or smell. Our nose can smell, absorb smells, but it cannot taste or hear or see. Our tongues can taste, but it cannot see or hear or smell. Ultimately, it is our conscious mind that acts like the CPU of a computer that collects and stores the information and explains everything to us. If we don’t have a mind, none of these matters.
Recently, I loss my sense of smell and taste and with that my hearing too was affected. It’s been nearly six months now. When things like this happens, we know the importance of being able to smell or taste or hear. My eye sight isn’t good either. Combination of all this, caused fear and anxiety in me. After five months, every now and again I started to smell and I was like an animal, sniffing around to check where the smell was coming from, what it was I was smelling. I have now forgotten what the actual smell was like, the original smell of certain things and I ask my family if they can smell cooking or a nice flowery smell or can they smell shower gel or shampoo after I had a shower. They can, but I can’t.
Lack of taste, caused me to add more salt to my food, which isn’t good. Loss of hearing caused problems too. I no longer hear the door bell etc., etc, and yet, I hear and smell and taste things that are not there. Phantom tastes, smells and sounds. Obviously, the signals aren’t transmitting to my conscious mind as they did since birth.
Listening to Dhamma, helped me to understand many things. These external features we have, only create our ID, our recognition to each other. Our internal organs that functions with the help of our conscious mind, maintain our very survival. Our conscious mind acts like a survival kit. From birth to death and to next life as long as we live, our conscious mind acts like a survival kit. If one organ doesn’t work, the other organs acts to compensate for that loss.
I remember what the Vicks vepo rub or Eau de Cologne smell like, but now, they smell disgusting, but I remember what they originally smell like, therefore, I know it’s the wrong smell. In my subconscious mind, this information was originally stored.
I only wish I could organise the filing cabinet in my brain, get rid of the things I do not wish to remember, delete the files of the past with bad memories. Refresh my mind.
Thank you for the eye opening explanation of Dhamma.
