    This list is such a fantastic idea. This year my wife and I are doing our yearly 10x10 board game challenge. However, this year we decided to not limit ourselves to just 10 board games played 10 times, but we have organized it by mechanic. That allows us to play more games in our collection, but get in a core mechanic. We've enjoyed our 10x10 this year than we have in the past.

    Interesting list! Here's mine: Tile Placement - Isle of Cats, Worker Placement - Dungeon Petz, Deck Builder - Clank, Area Control - Ginkgopolis, Tableau Builder - Obsession, Pick up and deliver - Vindication (sort of; I don't play this category so closest that I love) or Container (which is a little closer), Civilization builder - 7 Wonders (not my genre, so closest), Dungeon Crawler - Too Many Bones, Economic - Lisboa, Deduction - Decrypto

    Deckbuilding : Direwild
    Area control : The Godfather, corleons empire
    Tableau Builders : Empires of the North
    Pick up and Deliver : Star wars outer rim 👍

    -Area Control - The Bridges of Shangri-La or Mission Red Planet

    7:12 I think we have a different definition of “tile placement”. When I think of the mechanism, I think of games like Carcassonne, Castles of Burgundy, Azul and Cascadia, in which you are picking up a tile and placing it into a grid/area (whether it be your grid/area or a common grid/area). I get a vibe that you are taking tile placement to mean “polyomino” games, specifically - in which the tile you are placing is geometrically cut out/shaped - like a Tetris piece; because you are talking about Uwe Rosenberg’s games and he has done a lot of those type of games.

    • @AntLabGames
      @AntLabGames  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agree, tile placement could have meant both as described. We will be more specific in which one we are referring to in the future.

    • @MarkB-uu5we
      @MarkB-uu5we 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AntLabGames Great video, but also agree with JJ.... tile placement in my view is placing tiles usually with other tiles to go on one of the edges, like Carcissone, Cacadia, Land v Sea etc, ie: all the same shape. I see the tetris placement style of mechanic as Polyonimo (not sure of spelling) as its own mechanic. However, agree with your selection as a tetris type of game, great choice!

    • @Dr_C_Smith
      @Dr_C_Smith 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I could make Polyomino games their own category… but then that doesn’t resolve something like Feast for Odin, which uses polyomino, worker placement and even some resource management.
      I concur with the others: Tile placement is more where you build your board through tile placements. There should be an exploratory component to tile placement, IMO.

    • @olivierjodoin2283
      @olivierjodoin2283 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Polyomino technically is tile placement, it's a subcategory of the very wide tile placement category.

    • @sadekhanna
      @sadekhanna 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Even Castles of Burgundy has tile placement and is nowhere near to typical polyomino games. I prefer Cascadia and Azul, but I am happy that New York Zoo got a shoutout, it's unique :)

    Frances and Anthony, I absolutely love the new format! I own 70% of the games you mentioned and agree wholeheartedly with your assessments, especially rococo which is absolutely beautiful and very engaging. Also, Nations remains my #1 Civ Builder, far and a away better and far less punishing than Through the Ages. I also love Outer Rim as a solo experience in addition to getting it to the table w/friends. When I heard you mention Thirsty Dice, it reminded me that I have to have you down to the café soon. As an aside, I was listening to the first 45 min in the car and it was only when I picked up my phone to listen to the last few minutes did I notice Frances holding your newborn...adorable. If I could give one note, I'd recommend turning the table around so the viewers can read The Board Game NEXUS. Otherwise, flawless!

    my TOP 10 regarding your mechanics:
    tile placement: terraforming mars (great tableau builder too)
    worker placement: anachrony (top theme represented by its mechanic)
    deckbuilder: path of light and shadow (deckbuilders kind of feel the same. Aeons End is also a good one)
    area control: root (comp) or spirit island (coop) (second best game of all time in my view)
    tableau builder: race for the galaxy (great depth plus interaction for such a fast game)
    pick up and deliver: xia legends of a drift system or Outerim are both great sandbox games
    civ builder: Innovation from carl chudyk (what a legend! my favourite game of all Time)
    dungeon crawler: Galaxy Defenders or Sword and Sorcery bec of its KI system
    Economic: age of steam

      @@AntLabGames Definitely not accessible to those who are new into the hobby, but knowing your tastes, Pax Pamir isn’t as tough rules-wise as most Lacerdas for example. PaxRen on the other hand is a tough nut to crack at first. However, the gameplay itself is surprisingly smooth after you get over the first learning game. And it plays usually in 45-90 minutes. For Tableau Builders, I would pick Obsession. It has a great theme, the card-activated aspect is enjoyable, and it has worker enablement elements. At its core, building your manor is not only the way to win but is a real joy. For Pick Up & Deliver, I would select Xia with its expansion Embers of a Forsaken Star. It is also my favorite Sandbox game. The game has terrific replayability with the random tile placement, the Kiln, and the expansion's Economy mechanic. The ship mods mitigate much of the die roll randomness, but at a cost. It has a more challenging learning curve than Everdell, but it is worth it. Want a shorter game? Play to 5 or 10 Fame Points.

    Funny that Clank! was given as an exemple for a "not pure" deck builder because there is much other stuff going on. It's still mostly a deck builder in my book. Compared to Arnak which barely feels as a worker placement to me. It's always described as a hybrid worker placement deck builder but it has only a very small part of each and doesn't feel like either genre. It's a resource management game and you get your resources using various mechanisms including deck building and worker placement and multi use cards and exploration and race, etc

    I haven't played Harry Potter Hogwarts battle, but I do own/played the toy story re-skin of it. It is great, for prepping my five year old to play deck builders in a reasonably fun game. I would not paly it with adults, and I don't think a different theme would make a difference. I would rather play almost any other deck builder (including lost ruins of arnak), or a multitude of cooperative games.

    I think the best worker placement game out there is Raiders of Scythia. The place a worker-take a worker mechanic is just elegant. The game takes the best of Raiders of the North Sea with expansions, and streamlines it. For two players though, Targi is the best worker placement/tableau-building game, if for no other reason than it makes worker placement work at 2 players. I also like Gugong (if Architects of the West Kingdom is worker placement despite non-exclusive worker spaces, Gugong is as well), because the gameplay (giving gifts) brings out the theme (Ming Dynasty corruption) so well.
    For deckbuilders, I think my favorite one that will stand the test of time is Star Realms. Sure, the theme is pasted on (try Cthulhu Realms for a goofy variation), but it does away with Dominion-type fiddliness and boils it down to the essence of deckbuilding in a way that handles scoring much better than Ascension. For Dominion type deckbuilders, I like Heart of Crown because the way game end is triggered via backing a princess and gathering support for her coronation adds a race aspect to the game.
    For area control, one great game that is off the radar is Founding Fathers. The game is about the drafting of the U.S. Constitution, and while one can learn quite a bit about history from the game, it isn't edutainment. It is too long to get into it here, but check it out.
    For dungeon crawlers, a good one is Space Hulk: Death Angel. It is unfortunately out of print thanks to the Games Workshop/Fantasy Flight divorce, but if one can find a reasonably priced copy, it is really impressive how Corey Konieczka was able to deliver the feel of Space Hulk using only cards.

    For Worker Placement my personal pick would be Century: A New World (or the Golem equivalent). Very accessible, but very well integrated mechanism. Another one I really like is Pixie Queen. It adds enough twists to traditional worker placement mechanism to make it interesting. And the theme + other mechanics just make it a lot of fun.
    I would have picked Arnak as the top deck builder though ;) IMO it’s more prominent a mechanism on that one compared to worker placement. Star Realms Frontiers has also been a quick fun game to play every now and then. Would be nice to give Valley of Kings a try though.

    Regarding "worker placement," I like their choice of Arnak. It certainly has "light" elements of other mechanics, like deck building, resource management, track advancement, etc. But yes, the core is worker placement. My way of explaining this would be to point out that many of the most valuable cards are the ones that either let you reclaim a worker to place in a new location, or take the reward of a location without actually placing any worker there. You could also point out that the most simple of the expansion characters has the unique trait of having 3 workers instead of just 2. The fact that this is a big deal shows how important the worker placement aspect is.
    I'll also add that my favorite worker placement game (and favorite competitive game overall) is Champions of Midgard. It has a few other elements, like dice rolling, set collection, and of course resource management. But to me, I think Champions highlights worker placement even more so than Arnak as the core mechanic of the game.
    And as a quick, final, sidenote, Champions is significantly more awesome with the expansions. If you've only played the base game and never either of the expansions, I'd encourage you to give it another try, assuming you have access to the extra content.

      I think you spelled "the dice rolls were the best part" wrong. :P
      Maybe it comes from my RPG days (GURPS anyone?), but dice rolling is a fantastic way of simulating unexpected outcomes common to storytelling. No matter how much you prepare, no matter how skilled you are, there's always a small chance that something will go wrong. And even if you're really bad at something, possessing little skill, there's always a small chance you could get lucky. To me, that's exciting! It's like watching a movie. Will Han Solo make it through that asteroid field? It's such a risky maneuver, and now I'm literally on the edge of my seat! :)

    For myself although I like many of the games in this list these are my top of each of those mechanics that I've not only played but own(Or soon will own)and think everyone should have in their collection......
    1) Tile Laying: Meeple Land. Kingdomino is a close second.
    2) Worker Placement: The ever so classic and easy to learn but hard to master STONE AGE. Rajas of the Ganges is a close second.
    3) Deck Builder: Hadara. Taverns of Tiefenthal being a close second.
    4) Area Control: The classic and very underrated ROYALS. Rococo is a close second for me.
    5) Tableau Builder: COIMBRA. Coimbra honestly is a combination of quite a few mechanics(Worker placement with dice, Card Drafting, Income Management, Set Collecting, Track Movement, Variable setup). Coimbra is easily my #1 all time favourite out of all the games that I've played/owned since 2004(I've played well over 4,600 games in that time). Close second for me is both GREAT WESTERN TRAIL and THE CASTLES OF BURGUNDY.
    6) Pick up and Deliver: Hands down it's BLACK FLEET. Close second is Cinque Terre.
    7) Civilization Builder: I haven't really played many games in this mechanic but I did however really like 7 Wonders/7 Wonders Duel, Through the Ages: A New Story of Civilization. If I had to choose between the two I'd for sure go with Through the Ages.
    8) Dungeon Crawler: I haven't played many of these games either honestly but from the handful of games that I've played in this mechanic ARCARDIA QUEST is my favourite. I honestly don't own any from this mechanic because it's not a mechanic that I'm fond of and neither is my roommate who's my main coplayer. A close second would be MANSIONS OF MADNESS.
    9) Economic: BRASS BIRMINGHAM is at the top of my list for this category. Close second would be 1817.
    10) Social Deduction/Deduction: Honestly I've only really played a few in this category and those were WEREWOLF, CODENAMES, and JUST ONE. My favourite from those three is CODENAMES.

    It was probably already mention in the 150+ comments but I just had to also add my personal opinion. Arnak (amazing game) is much more of a resource management or card playing game. There are only 2 workers and you will end up, typically, playing more cards in a turn or spending resources to move up a track. It has worker placement but I do not feel that is the main mechanic. Same as you compared Clank to a deck builder but didn't really want to use that as an example. I believe Clank is more of a deck builder than Arnak is a worker placement game.
