It's complicated. But a few people have stolen walkways and parks from the rest of the citizens. Housing is certainly the best solution, but they can't be allowed to steal public spaces from the rest of the people. Compassion needs to be there too, of course.
@kimberlygause I was a kid when they tried to build affordable housing in San Francisco back when Silicon Valley started. The locals went nuts and blocked it every chance they could, got the council to turn most of the city into historic districts to block any new construction.
its cruel to take parks away from kids, or have them step on needles. Tax payers pay for the parks here in grants pass, and homeless contribute nothing but problems.
Im saying its cruel to allow people to stay in the streets. As in it is inhumane to allow it and walk past like nothing is wrong. Jail them for all I care. @CA-kj4sf
It’s wasteful to allow addicts to refuse shelter so they can complain about being homeless. Don’t believe me? There are numerous videos where that specific point is highlighted. I’ve had it raised in my court where a defendant wants to have it both ways-to remain an addict who freely roams the streets, free to use but also a victim of homelessness, despite repeatedly being offered housing. As a judge, it gets old hearing that story
So what do homeless advocates want to do? Let homeless encampments take over all the neighborhoods and cities and don’t let other people enjoy their lives in this city? They have no solution and keep letting more and more homeless encampments grow.
@@harveythecat What are you talking about? The original ninth circuit decision specifically forbid cities from removing encampments. It's right there in Ms. Friedenbach's freaking lawsuit! And as far as "criminalizing poverty"... Are the police being ordered to rush into the private homes of the working poor and make mass arrests or something? Seriously, you people need a new mantra.
@@a_mighty_raven_451 “Criminalizing poverty” refers to laws and policy that punish people for being extremely poor. People who are homeless are extremely poor. When you arrest someone for being homeless, you are punishing them for their circumstances. When you get arrested, you’ll have a criminal record which makes it harder for people to find housing and jobs later on. It perpetuates the cycle of poverty. The solution isn’t to arrest the homeless, it is to provide more affordable housing. This strategy has worked for Finland, Norway, Japan, and the Netherlands.
All of the above, plus a housing crisis across all big cities. All the up front money! If you only make 15-20 pr hr, but you need 3k to get a simple apartment.
it's all the above, and having a huge shortage of cheap housing is a big part of the problem. When disabled live on around 900 a month ssi, and rent is 1500-2000 for a studio.. They become homeless.
The Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) requires that sidewalks be accessible, which means there must be a minimum clear width to get around any obstruction. However, it is far better to have obstructions out of the sidewalk entirely.
One subtle benefit of this ruling is that it puts the onus onto public officials, whose choices on whether or not to clear public spaces will determine voters' choices of whether or not their government is competent and effective in protecting the safety and economic viability of their city..
Personal responsibility folks, all I see is grown ups able bodied individuals who have refused to accept personal responsibility and expect other adults to take care of them?unfair
If you are homeless and use drugs daily then go to hell. Accept shelter and restrictions or accept prison (the best program to help someone get clean/sober). There is no other options
Clean up this mess. No one should live like this legally in this great country. Open up mental health facilities, and make sure they have what they need.
Sure sounds like a great idea. Now all you have to do is find the funding for that. So many bright ideas from people sitting around giving suggestions but no help in actually taking action.
Give them a safe place to be. Not enough shelters and they won't ever be enough with millions of illegals having preference. Human needs sleep, food water toilets ability to use resources that exist 4 them. Billions given promised projects never completed & money gone? Putting all the homeless in jail & fining them will not solve the problem they will still exist. Yes it is inhumane & cruel more abuse to human beings. All you have to do is turn off welfare to drug addicts and alcoholics mandate drug tests and most these people will move back to the state they fled here for free gibs.
They are already doing that and jails are at maximum capacity and lots of substance use disorder. Wardens are overwhelmed and having breakdowns now wanting to end their existence

Do you mean arrest and jail homeless who have no where to go? Or do you mean the billions given and about nothing done to house's them? Could it be the millions of illegals being housed plus in California the thousands released from prison that are committing crimes? Grants Pass homeless camping law wasn't abusive, they allow homeless to camp in designated parks but they must move to a new park every week, this distinction means they are camping and the park is NOT their home. Homeless advocates think making them move every week was criminalizing homelessness, it is not, they would only get a ticket if they wouldn't move, some resisted moving to test the law, they failed.
it also points out who is too mentally ill or drugged out to keep camping, which kicks them into treatment or a hospital sooner than later. 3 months rotting on the street or in a park will change a person

According to the Bible, Christianity teaches that Christians should help the poor and treat them with compassion and justice. Some say that helping the poor is a religious duty and that those who do so are righteous and good. The Bible includes many verses that address how Christians should treat the poor, including: Deuteronomy 15:10 "Give generously to them and do so without a grudging heart; then because of this the LORD your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to" Proverbs 19:17 "Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will reward them for what they have done" Proverbs 22:9 "The generous will themselves be blessed, for they share their food with the poor" Proverbs 31:9 "Defend the rights of the poor and needy" Proverbs 14:31 "Whoever oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God" Proverbs 22:22-23 "Do not exploit the poor because they are poor and do not crush the needy in court, for the Lord will take up their case and will exact life for life"
Cities need to move away from dorm style shelters with bunk beds and need to recognize that people want some sense of personal space. Most people living in tents on sidewalks would be happy to be inside, protected from the elements, even if they were just living inside tents under a roof. The utter lack of imagination of officials is stunning. Why not take input from those who prefer living in tents and create new kinds of shelters. The old format is not suitable. And building "affordable housing" isn't affordable to the cities.. and it doesn't happen fast enough. There are tons of empty buildings - commercial and industrial. Get creative with how to repurpose those spaces to rapidly ramp up shelter and clean up the cities.
the people who are living in tents on the sidewalks refused tiny homes options, traditional shelter options. Gotta work for it cuz its not given unless your an illegal alien
It's complicated. But a few people have stolen walkways and parks from the rest of the citizens. Housing is certainly the best solution, but they can't be allowed to steal public spaces from the rest of the people. Compassion needs to be there too, of course.

Funds for affordable housing have been systematically reallocated into realtors and to give tax breaks for big property companies
@@pumamanta1771 Don't you mean systematically reallocated to the pockets of politicians and their cronies ?
@kimberlygause I was a kid when they tried to build affordable housing in San Francisco back when Silicon Valley started. The locals went nuts and blocked it every chance they could, got the council to turn most of the city into historic districts to block any new construction.
Stop enabling hard drug users then
It's cruel to leave PEOPLE in the streets.
It's cruel to take our children's money that we could save for their future and pay for the "Non-Profit" organizations to provide them "legal" drugs.
Are you housing any homeless people?
its cruel to take parks away from kids, or have them step on needles.
Homeless advocates are not against removing tent encampments. They are against criminalizing poverty.
It’s a system problem
A small number of people have most of the wealth
And huge numbers live in poverty
Is it homelessness or drug abuse and mental illness?
All of the above
Yes
That's discrimination
All of the above, plus a housing crisis across all big cities. All the up front money! If you only make 15-20 pr hr, but you need 3k to get a simple apartment.
it's all the above, and having a huge shortage of cheap housing is a big part of the problem. When disabled live on around 900 a month ssi, and rent is 1500-2000 for a studio.. They become homeless.
The Homeless Industrial Complex won’t like this ruling. .
No, they don't.
Great decision
SF needs to do something. People avoid it now. Way overdue for a cleanup.
I'm ok with them managing encampments. But it crosses the line when they target individuals who have nowhere else to go.
Gavin Newsom is the opposite of conservative.
The Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) requires that sidewalks be accessible, which means there must be a minimum clear width to get around any obstruction. However, it is far better to have obstructions out of the sidewalk entirely.
yeah, let's make poverty and homelessness and sleeping in your car illegal. Welcome to the land of the free.
4:29 liberal woke extremism
One subtle benefit of this ruling is that it puts the onus onto public officials, whose choices on whether or not to clear public spaces will determine voters' choices of whether or not their government is competent and effective in protecting the safety and economic viability of their city..
Personal responsibility folks, all I see is grown ups able bodied individuals who have refused to accept personal responsibility and expect other adults to take care of them?unfair
If you are homeless and use drugs daily then go to hell. Accept shelter and restrictions or accept prison (the best program to help someone get clean/sober). There is no other options
Agreed

@InvisibleAcropolis you are blind to reality
@InvisibleAcropolis Well said 👏
Crazy. Find some BLM land!!
Clean up this mess. No one should live like this legally in this great country. Open up mental health facilities, and make sure they have what they need.
Sure sounds like a great idea. Now all you have to do is find the funding for that.
So many bright ideas from people sitting around giving suggestions but no help in actually taking action.
Confine in drug treatment facilities. More compassionate.
we are about 40 years behind in building enough poor housing.
Blocking sidewalks is already supposed to be illegal.
647(e) Enacted in 1850: No squatting. Been that way for 174 years now.
Why not arrest those who are drugged or selling police know who they are. So many are not drug addicts
People get tickets for parking on sidewalks but tents are ok?Seriously
Must reopen mental institutions
better than they used to be though! those were horror show prisons.
All you have to do is turn off welfare to drug addicts and alcoholics mandate drug tests and most these people will move back to the state they fled here for free gibs.
Now will wonder how this is going to be implemented.
The liberal states have temperate climates and the homeless surge
has exploded.
They are already doing that and jails are at maximum capacity and lots of substance use disorder. Wardens are overwhelmed and having breakdowns now wanting to end their existence
All we need to do is just not be poor.
Just can't believe there is not enough jail cells. Nor can I except there is no place to put drug addicts & drunks somewhere. Putting them all together and making them all criminals is wrong. They must be separated from non addicts
Build more jails.
Imagine given the tools to clean up the city and choosing not to use it.
Do you mean arrest and jail homeless who have no where to go? Or do you mean the billions given and about nothing done to house's them? Could it be the millions of illegals being housed plus in California the thousands released from prison that are committing crimes? Newsom has increased money for illegals, budget cuts for the citizens and more money for illegals to get housing, not any for the homeless just grants & vouchers
Time fir democrats to bring homeless to their homes. Start a list!

or charge the poo r a lot of money, like that's going to get them rent money real soon.
3 months rotting on the street or in a park will change a person
its bad here in grants pass, and needles are everywhere in parks where kids cant even go to play there. Have them go to portland where they are welcomed.

Yeah that's way out of control you know people exist and if they don't have anywhere to go then they need to sleep you just can't make that illegal that's wrong
Not just morally wrong, it’s the incorrect way to go about this.
Does anyone think that ticketing people that have no money is going to be a solution? What happens to families? If taxpayers don’t want homeless on the streets, they going to have to pony up the money to house people. THAT’S REALITY!
What families?
I never see families on the streets, they would probably stay in a shelter. Probably just another lib fairy tale.
yes. we are about 40 years behind on building cheap low rent housing for the poor . while allowing tens of millions o f illegals to come in and take the available housing .
Rewarding and propping up the homeless just creates more homeless. America in decline due to bad government not doing their job and being out exchange, being corrupt and getting away with it and giving themselves a raise all adds up to a decline in our society from the top down.

All of the funding should go to homeless removal, drug rehab, and mental health. No tiny homes. No shelters without rehab or treatment. According to the Bible, Christianity teaches that Christians should help the poor and treat them with compassion and justice. Some say that helping the poor is a religious duty and that those who do so are righteous and good. The Bible includes many verses that address how Christians should treat the poor, including:
Deuteronomy 15:10
"Give generously to them and do so without a grudging heart; then because of this the LORD your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to"
Proverbs 19:17
"Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will reward them for what they have done"
Proverbs 22:9
"The generous will themselves be blessed, for they share their food with the poor"
Proverbs 31:9
"Defend the rights of the poor and needy"
Proverbs 14:31
"Whoever oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God"
Proverbs 22:22-23
"Do not exploit the poor because they are poor and do not crush the needy in court, for the Lord will take up their case and will exact life for life"
None of that is meaningful, impactful, nor motivational if one is not a "CHR1ST14N". I personally find "CHR1ST14N1TY" repulsive in many ways.
What does religion have to do with it?

They want to be where they can easily access drugs, beg for money (they want to be where the population is) they want access to businesses to steal from. They do not want to abide by rules of the shelters, cities or other authorities.
