Haha! I totally agree with you on all counts. Actually very spooky how aligned my tastes seem to be with yours. Your list is absolutely identical to mine. So fun to hear you say what I have said so often about many of these lauded artists. 😅
Great idea for a video. Don’t see a problem in you voicing your opinion so honestly. I’ve watched enough of your videos to understand your taste in music and many of the artists you mention fall outside of your sphere. Just as an aside i wonder what you think of Stephen Wilson and the various bands he has been associated with?
Very much with you on lots of those, I have never enjoyed (other than the odd song) music from Elton John, Wings, Oasis, Coldplay etc, BUT the music of Nick Drake is a beautiful listen in my opinion. Also Queen make my girlfriend happy, so thats good with me because she doesn't really do music. Her favourite song is Bohemian Rhapsody (yeah, I know), I once won a voucher for itunes and I got Best of Queen with her in mind and I downloaded it in hi-res and played it to her on my Sony XM4 headphones and she heard it as she had never heard it before, and it made her cry with happiness, so Brian and his funny guitar are good for me (now and then).. Good video Chris, I am still fairly new to your channel, but I like and respect your music knowledge and your humble way of putting it across..
oh yeah, and I am glad it isn't just me that finds original The Who Live at Leeds album a bit meh. I remember back in the mid 70 s ( I was 15yo) and critics were still raving about how good it was. When I eventually got the album and discovered it was just 5 songs and a 15 minute medley, I couldn't believe the fuss. Now the deluxe version that was released in 2016 is much more like it.
Never apologise for an opinion. Spot on with your assessment of Oasis. You won't agree with me on this one but Patti Smith falls into this category for me.
I'm with you on most of these Chris, although not the Van Morrison live LP and Nick Drake. Here's a weird thing though, I can objectively say Captain Fantastic is my all time favourite album, I think it is outstanding in every possible way. Great video though and some brave choices (but where we're U2?) 😮 😆
Just watched this video sound off as someone was working...saw you wave about a Jethro Tull album and am currently assembling an angry mob with flaming torches. Then saw you waft a Nick Drake album and have upscaled to full size assault force with branding irons.
In better news…have done a favourite five for Tommy Bolin. Five albums, solo tracks, rock tracks, fusion like tracks. Right up your street. Don’t give the mob the order just yet
@@TheVinylOrchard As I agree with your other choices (and would add the Beatles and Rolling Stones) I have instructed the assault force to use cold branding only.
Hi Chris, respect for your honesty. I get your thoughts on Coldplay, Foo Fighters and Oasis, Gallaghers voice is like is model aeroplane. I do have some records of the artists you mentioned (including Elton John, The Who) but I cannot remember when I last played them, like you said I should sell them, thanks again Chris.
This amused me so much I watched it 3 times! Coldplay’s Parachutes does have some great songs, but after that they went $$$. Some stick for U2 in the comments. I loved their first 3 albums, shame about the rest.
Great video Chris. Agreed with about 75% of your list. Artists (and I use the term loosely) I´d add would be Springsteen, Pink Floyd, Iron Maiden, Radiohead and Yes. I think sometimes you are forced to feel that you should like something even though it´s plainly utter sh*te.
Foo Fighters had a moment when their first album was released in 1995 when the idea of the "band" was just Dave Grohl making a record by himself at home and playing most/all of the instruments in the tradition of early Todd Rundgren, Stevie Wonder or Prince. Never understood them as a band after they started touring. Everything anyone needs to know about "hair metal" can be seen in two hilarious "documentaries" from the 1980s: Penelope Spheeris's "The Decline of Western Civilizaton 2: The Metal Years" and "This Is Spinal Tap." No more needs to be explained.
@TheVinylOrchard. Regarding Elton John’s “Captain Fantastic…….” album. Back in 1975 Elton was the headline act at “The Midsummer Music Show” on 21st of June at Wembley Stadium. Elton had the final slot on the day and went on after The Beach Boys. People were leaving the stadium after The Beach Boys set. Looked like many had come along just for them. Then Elton - after opening with some of his older better known material, played the whole of his then new release “Captain Fantastic……”. And more people started to leave the gig. That album - and maybe “Rock Of The Westies” are not Elton’s best works. The compère on the day was Johnnie Walker RIP. Stay safe and well.
Olah Chris. I agree with you completely about Coldplay. I have no idea what people find appealing about them. I have two or three CDs I have played once and didn't hear anything of remark on any of them. I notice one of your other commenters mentioned Genesis. I agree wholeheartedly. With the exception of a very few tracks I find their music tediously uninteresting, especially their early albums. Ditto with Radiohead. I bought OK Computer on the basis of positive reviews and was totally underwhelmed. Appreciation of music is such a personal thing, often just based on a particular time or a feeling, that something can make you go 'wow!' the first time you hear it. That's part of what makes it endlessly fascinating. You like what you like. It isn't a competition.
Great vid Chris. Actually a subject I've been toying with to do myself, but just haven't. I may do down the line. I'm in agreement with some of these for certain. At the end of the day, it's all subjective isn't it - so hopefully nobody will take offence or unsubscribe!
Interesting video Chris, I'm with you on a lot of these i.e. Foo fighters, Coldplay, McCartney, Van Morrison, Oasis, Nick Drake. Hair Metal I understand, but I really like Warrant, I did like the first Motley Crue album and met them backstage at Donnington which was there first UK gig I think, but although I have a bunch of their albums am not a huge fan. I'm pretty much in agreement on Tull (a few good songs but nothing to rave about). I did however like Queen's and Elton John's earlier albums (though I haven't played many in years).
There are a few for me some we have in common Oasis ,coldplay ,motley crue, van morrison and Foo fighters. Others, for me are Smiths/Morrissey ,U2 pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin.
Some brave picks there, but I agree with most of them. Some I never connected with are Meatloaf Marilion Aerosmith Eagles ! or 2 decent tracks but I just never got into any of them.
Nice one Chris! With you all the way on many of these, particularly Elton John and Van Morrison. However, 70's Queen I adore but it all went south in later years. Never understood the mass love for Oasis either and yes, it definitely starts with the Gallagher brothers. I often get hammered for two artists that I just can't get away with at all, namely Billy Joel and (especially) Bruce Springsteen. I have tried but nope, I'd rather listen to Racey's Greatest Hits. 😂😂
Great video Chris - Controversial... possibly. Honest... definitely. As I suspected, I concur with 90% of your picks. I would have to swap out Queen for The Smiths. They make music to slit your wrists to IMO, a bit like Nick Drake. Thanks for this post, really enjoyed it. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
This would be the shortest debate ever over a Thursday beer, I AGREE. I missed out on Oasis tickets, didn't try 🙂. I'd like to add Rod Stewart. Possibly gets away with it in The Faces but after that I'm switching off.
Great shout with Rod. Although his work with Jeff Beck and then the Faces probably saves him. There are no such redeeming features of my favourite Mancunians though. Derivative overhyped nonsense Cheers Tone. Thursday beer required. Flares optional.
Hey Chris! Some heavy hitters there; Elton, Queen, Who, Paul, Tull Van. Nothing wrong with that though. If it doesn't connect, you can't force yourself. I have many popular acts I feel the same way about; Billy Joel, Steely Dan, Elvis Costello, Police. Cheers!
Good rundown Chris. These things are massively subjective...I think without Mull of Kintyre I quite possibly wouldn't be here today.🤣 To be honest I've never been much of a Who fan - certain songs I like but in general I find most of their stuff too bombastic, and a lot of it sounds like 'marching off to war' music, which puts me off. Oddly enough though I really like what I've heard of Pete Townsend's solo stuff, so maybe it's Daltrey I mainly don't get on with. And even though I enjoy Moon's energy and gumption, after a while I start to notice that he's just playing the same stuff all the time, through every song. Happy new year.
I do like The Who, James, but I think its Townsend's songwriting I like. I agree Daltrey's singing is too bombastic. Townsend's first solo album is lovely though. excellent songs sung in Pete's more fragile voice.
Hi John. I love Townsend's album 'All the Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes'. I'd even go as far to say that it's one of my favourite records from the eighties.
Largely agree with your sentiments Chris, although Tull's Songs From The Wood is a fine album in my opinion. In terms of Queen I saw them at Wembley Arena in the late 70's ( or was early 80's?) and wasn't impressed, that said they did produce some good songs, check out White Man for example. I'd throw Kiss into your 'don't get' list as well. I suggest their stage show masks some very poor music.
Hi Chris! With you on Hair metal and definitely Coldplay! Definitely agree with Oasis for me why? 😂 The Who? Tull? disagree with those! Definitely Mr Grumpy Van Morrison! Nick Drake have to be in the mood! Great idea Chris 👍 UB40 AAAAARRRRGGGHHHHH! 😂
@TheVinylOrchard we have to remember 99% of music ever produced we haven't heard ,and what we have heard probably 50% is poor, great debate for you to ponder.
Think we all have some, Frank Zappa and if I'm able to say Bowie without being shot, Captain Beefheart (if i ever get told to 'listen to Trout mask replica its amazing' again i think my head will explode), Prince was another, brilliant musician but meh just not for me. I think it's not that i hate them, it just doesn't connect with me. The good news is there is always something else that might be the next life long obsession. Plus seriously would love that Nick Drake box set(willing to make an offer) as i have been listening to Pink moon since i was a young lad, love a bit of maudlin'
The Gallagher brother's are definitely my issue with "Goawaysis" and I totally agree with your choice of "Motley Crue/Crud" no brothers but four arseholes! Coldplay's first couple of albums i enjoyed, but the follow ups are just bad. The Who and Queen were a surprise.... they are on the list of bands that the assumption is everyone likes them. And yes I do, both easily make my top five bands.
Some of the bands I cannot connect with, feature a singer who sees himself as some sort of messiah. I do not like The Doors, I cannot stand The Police, I am not particularly fond of U2 and I think Guns n‘ Roses are the most overrated band of all time.
Hi Chris, interesting subject and choices. Agree with some, disagree with others but that’s ok. Focus gets away with the flute playing I reckon, and one band I never got on with was Kiss.
Well Chris nice start to the year to put the cat amongst the pigeons i think any big artist is in the firing line you did well going for some jugulars and in most cases they were musical not personal. Alot i find personal like Liam cosying up to Tony Blair at No.10 kinda makes me sick and his voice yeah it's not great but at the time i went along with their wave of popularity. Do politics and music go together? 🤔 Hmmmmm...... So can i have the Nick Drake please? He's melancholy......
u2, fairport convention, queen ,coldplay, foo fighters, pearl jam, dream theatre, kiss, the clash, aerosmith, so many bands that i don't really like. so many less well known bands that make better music in my opinion. this is what makes the world interesting
The Clash bar first Lp were horrendously overrated. Fairport convention. Great shout. Horrific band part of a horrific genre. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Cheers, Chris
Chris, I absolutely agree with you wholeheartedly. But like you I don’t disrespect their talent at all it just doesn’t do anything for me at all. I wasn’t into britpop too but I do like cigarettes and alcohol. I always was a little scared to admit I don’t like Queen because people get obsessed with them, but I did like the film. I don’t like RHCP but being a bass player I love fleas playing. I’ve never liked the who and I’ve never listened to live at Leeds but I do remember it being in the record racks of the stall I used to spend Saturday mornings going through the vinyl. The best live at Leeds version is The Mac lads. The Who? The Macc Lads😊
Fully respect your views, if not necessarily agreeing with all of them. I was half expecting to see Kate Bush on that list. Here’s a few who never did it for me ….. The Jam; New Order; Miles Davis; Roxy Music; Def Leppard; Iron Maiden. If you lose any subscribers, more fool them my friend.
Great and courageous video chris , agree with Coldplay , Oasis , Queen ( bombastic shit ) but i do like Jethro Tull . Artists i do not like , let's see . Queens Of The Stone Age ( awful ) , Nick Cave ( how dreary !! ) , Sex Pistols ( i do like punk but not the Pistols ) , Radiohead ( very depressing ! ) , Jeff Buckley ( jesus !! ) .... so there you go
Hi Chris, interesting video and I agree with nearly all of the artists you mentioned, except Elton John, mainly his 70's output, Queen again mainly their 70's stuff but I understand what you mean regards Brian May's guitar sound, It does annoy me sometimes, but he is a great guitarist. Paul McCartney/Wings ... some good stuff bust mostly very disappointing. Oasis are just boring but I love their song I'm Outta Time, fantastic song. Artists I just don't get or connect with include, Led Zeppelin (most overated band of all time, imo) Yes, Bob Dylan, Radiohead, The Rolling Stones and Black Sabbath, however, I think they had done some good songs in the 70's but I just can't listen to Ozzy Osbourne !!
Totally agree with Coldplay opinion, I can't stand nor like Phil Collins/genesis, I absolutely loved the police, but can't stand sting solo work I saw him live last summer and he sang obviously lots of police songs but they just don't sound right without andy summers on guitar and copeland on drums.
Cheers Chris, I love this video and it's theme. We all have friends who love certain artists that we just don't get. Oasis are crap and the two brothers are louts. Hair metal was like a bad cartoon. I liked the first two Queen albums but eventually their sound became predictable and boring. Coldplay bore me too, U2 as well. The RHCPs make me cringe and the Foo Fighters, meh. Generic corporate rock. Two artists my friends love that I couldn't be bothered with are Tom Waits and Nick Cave. I'd rather do the washing then listen to them. What I'd love to see you talk about are artists you weren't thrilled about at first but then grew to really like. That would be pretty interesting
It's difficult to disagree with most of that, although I actually don't mind Jethro Tull and Nick Drake. I was actually playing Pink Moon a couple of days ago. I would have also added Kiss, one of, if not the most, overrated bands ever. Fleetwood Mac ( post Peter Green), Aerosmith, Def Leppard, and U2 would all make it onto my list, too. Great video 👍
Don't sit on the fence about Oasis, Chris! 😆 Drilling this topic down a little further - for me there are three bands that I cannot connect with UNTIL they changed their singer. 1/ (sacrilege I know - Deep Purple until Gillan departed. 2/ Black Sabbath until Ozzy departed. 3/ Iron Maiden until Di'anno departed. One of my absolute favourite bands might be at the top of the music 'marmite' list. Sparks. If nothing else, I don't believe anyone could regard them as being derivative.
Nicely controversial Richard. Like it. Sparks. Great shout. I have no idea whatsoever what people see in them. I always just think it’s clever to,like them. Cheers my friend, Chris
I mostly agree with you. I do like some Elton John, but not his honky tonk piano stuff. He's more a single artist for me, and he's got few great albums, if any. As for Nick Drake, I think he's great, although I unlike most fans prefer his first album.
Hi Chris, some of your choices there are definitely on my avoid list. Coldplay, so bloody boring, Elton John, (hair transplant) a line from the swindle😁 Queen, my daughter just laughs at me when anything that comes on by them, that's it straight for the remote. Van Morrison doesn't do anything for me either, didn't mind a couple of tracks when he was in Them. But even a couple of tracks is enough for me. The Who, not keen on all that Rock Opera stuff, but they have done a couple of good tunes, don't ask me to name them. Can't remember who else you mentioned. Anyway, great video, agree with most. Oh yeh, Oasis, not a fan of there's either, very overrated in my opinion. Cheers. Forgot to mention my real hate... Anything Disco 😂
I fully agree with all your choices, I just don't get them. I would also add Tangerine Dream, Yes and Genesis with Phil Collins on vocals, all of whom leave me stone cold. Keep up the good work.
I do like The Who, but i don't like Live at Leeds. Oasis is okay at least the first two albums, but i really don't get why they were so huge. I do like a few of Van Morrison's albums, but that live was quite dreary, sold it. Jethro Tull, it's not just the flute, i have tried with several of their albums, but i didn't like any of them. Last one i tried was Aqualung and i didn't like it. I just don't like their songs. One you didn't mention ELO. Some of their songs are okay, not crazy about any of them and i don't have any interest in listening to their records. The only song that i want to hear is the long version of Roll Over Beethoven which apparently has a long section with the symphony orchestra. I've heard the short version and it wasn't interesting. Been meaning to listen to the long version for decades, but never got around to it. Not gonna listen to it tonight either because it's so late. Pasi
Hi CHris, totally agree with you re Coldplay (totally bland) and especially Oasis (like you not a fan of the whole Britpop scene either). Elton John and Queen - it's down to the period - I like Elton John's albums up to the initial split with Bernie Taupin, but post that no thanks - similarly with Queen it's those 70s albums up to Jazz and Live Killers that I like and after that not so much. It's a similar thing with McCartney and Wings - Mull of Kintyre was my jumping off point (though did like it's B side). Though I think if I had access to all his albums post that I could probably make up a decent compilation. I'm with you on hair metal (though I'm not really a metal head as such). Really liked Whitesnake in it's early days but couldn't stand them when they went down the hair metal route. Never could get into bands like Foreigner, Journey, Van Halen - just don't do anything for me. A guy I have a lot of respect for is Todd Rundgren, but (apart from the first two Utopia albums) I just can't get into his music, and I have tried a number of times. But at last I've found someone who can't get on with Nick Drake. Now this is an artist who given my love of folk and singer-songwriters from that period I should love but I just don't. I won't mention the horrors of The Sex Pistols and The Smiths.... oops I just did 🤣
I know it’s all very subjective and highly personal but Nick Drake is awful. So many love him. Do they say it because they think they should like him? Cheers Pete
As a folk fan Pete how can you hate Mull of Kintyre? A genuine modern acoustic folk song with a glorious melody and heart-rending bagpipes, plus a big rousing finale around a bonfire on the beach. And McCartney wears wellies in the video, what's not to love?🤣
It’s weird isn’t it how sometimes you don’t get a band that are obviously doing something right. I sort of get it with things like scream metal. It just seems a bridge to far from traditional metal which I get. I’m sort of the same with wings and queen. When first saw Queen on whistle test thought amazing and still like early albums but night at the opera was last Queen album I bought. Sometimes with wings an odd track will make me think wow! But other times glad that a cd lets you skip. Elton however is different for me. The early albums are a mix of orchestra, country, folky . Although glam rock changed him I still feel yellow brick road and captain fantastic are incredible bodies of work. Tumbleweed connection is my personal favourite He did get patchy in late 70s and after, but I felt at Glastonbury his performance was incredible Enjoyed video
I have a problem with music I can't understand - not technically, but that I can't understand the point of. I fail to see the point of heavy metal, it just always sound so dead and perfunctory. Prog I should like, given jazz is my home music, but I seem to be allergic to it - it's full of songs that go on forever and never go anywhere. And the worst one for that, because every strand of my telecaster playing DNA says I should love him, but Danny Gatton's stuff just leaves me cold. People are always trying to convert me. Apropos Nick Drake - listen to his records but don't listen to his singing. The records are worth it just for his imaginative and clever guitar laying. Block his words out ( I never or hardly ever, listen to words anyway so maybe that helps) and dig the guitar. another plus is the records are pretty short, so it's over quickly if you still don't like it!
Sitting here waiting for The Smiths. Similarly, I really can't be bothered with Talking Heads, Gang Of Four and especially The Fall. Really interesting subject. Also, it seems important to like a song or two by bands you don't like. So for example, I like Victoria by Mark E. Smith's lot 😂 Bruce Springsteen leaves me cold as do Motorhead. Obviously Status Quo. I don't see why people liked REM either. Come to think of it, it's probably quicker to list bands I do like 😃
God there are loads of artists I don’t like. REM. Great shout. Load of shite. Never got the Fall either. Bruce Springsteen could have easily made this list!
My advice Chris would be don’t buy stuff that you don’t like. Have you tried any black music? There’s an incredible amount of truly talented artists who write their own material and sing in their natural voices. As you favour guitar music I thoroughly recommend Otis Rush and Magic Sam who made some great music for the Cobra label in Chicago.
It’s so easy to find huge selling bands and singers that I’ll never understand the appeal of.Bruce Springsteen and all his soundalikes , meatloaf Bon jovi guns and roses all that safe pap that came out in the 80s Def leppard oh my god !! Van halen help me Jesus !! So many others, but all these multi multi million selling tripe. Countless interesting bands at that time, and any other time or era that sell sod all. Play it safe, go for mass appeal, sell your soul. Ok, that’s OTT 😂
Oasis - quite derivative? That's the understatement of the year! I agree with you on nearly all of the artists and bands you mention. Foo Fighters are so generic Indie / grunge. Queen - too much pomp and theatrics for me. Van Morrison. I've seen him live twice and was bored to death. However I do like the Who, especially in the 60s and I do like Nick Drake. This video should get some heated responses I think!
Artists/ bands I dont get... The Clash. The Smiths,Dream Theatre .Paul McCartney Oasis.Blur Hair Metal. The Beachboys. There are many more as it's obviously subjective.
@TheVinylOrchard It took me a few years ,then it clicked ,they became to go to comfort blanket ,Gaucho is a masterpiece, Aja is FM personified ,Can't buy a thrill just sets up the post hippy /irony waste ground excesses.etc .Strictly for contemplating ,dining and wining or (whining),production out of the world And Dias guitar solos are superb .Hope that helps😅🫣🙄🤠
We all hear things differently and this is all just for good discussion ive tried with Van Morrison he does have some good songs for whole albums i find just alright and Oasis were alright for their time but the Gallagher brothers antics to me totally ruined their credibility
@TheVinylOrchard one of the worst rip off bands ever now 90s brit pop is part of my teenage and high school years and I liked blur and elastica whom were influenced by the classics but didn't do what Liam and Noel did by ripping off every Beatles and kinks riff that they could and trying to pass it off as homages not a chance just out of curiosity what did you think of blur and all of the 90s brit pop phenomena was it for you a respectable homage to the 60s and 70s or just plain rubbish oh James were probably to me the best of those 90s British pop bands
Agree with most of these particularly Queen and the US soft rock/hair bands. 90/00's bands like Coldplay and Ocean Colour Scene were just awful and had nothing to say really. U2 are probably the most overrated of all in my opinion, never got into them and honestly think a lot of their work is mediocre to say the least.
Well Chris I truly think we are brothers from a different mother lol. I could not agree with you more on those artists with the exception of Wings & Elton, I have been a big fan of both those artists. Never could understand the appeal of Van Morrison, Foo Fighters, hate Oasis, Jethro Tull gives me a head ache and Hair Metal bands are just immature untalented noise. We need more Deep Purple!!
@jamesgriffithsmusic I’ve really tried with this band and some early stuff I don’t mind. But the guitar and multi tracked vocal thing just finish me off.
Ideally past the age of 19 humans should not be ''connecting'' to pop music! I do have a few pop Lps but thankfully none by the entertainers you showcased here, other than Astral Weeks, a masterpiece, but arguably mainly due to the Jazzers on it! Why do you keep buying records you do not value?
I don’t keep buying them. These were all records I bought in the 90s or before. Other than Nick Dreary Drake. I often buy things if they are cheap just to give them a listen. Doesn’t always go well. I’m sure we’ve all bought stuff we regret
@@TheVinylOrchard I did, pre the Internet, or records I could not evaluate online. But they soon get discarded if they do not 'cut the cake'. Whereas it seems you kept items for decades you did not value, which might be less typical, even ideal.
I have the space to keep them. Like most collectors there is only a finite number you can play anyway. Most people have records they don’t overly value if they have a decent size collection. Tastes change to mind
Well, this one had me laughing out loud! Mostly in a good way … Hair metal? Almost universally a big “No”. Possibly not even Van Halen, which will no doubt piss a lot of folks off. Quickly walked away from Judas Priest after “Stained Class”. Cannot deal with Malmstein at all, but my biggest “not for me” is Rush. Owned several albums and really wanted to like their music, but … On the flip side, what is/are your guiltiest secret musical love/s, Chris? Mine is probably The Bangles …
The massive success of Coldplay really is one the great mysteries of the music world. Foofighters, sure they suck but I bet their concerts are fun. Elton, I guess Beatles types really dig his songs. Hair metal, was fun at 16 years old. Wings again I suppose it's a Beatles thing. Jethro Tull good for a listen every few years. Queen, fans dig that bombadtic theatre. I mean Meatloaf sold about a thousand million LPs but Coldplay? I cannot see one single redeeming feature to that droning, wet lettuce unimposing FM radio rock. Is it even rock? What actually is it? We should blame post War (album) U2 for somewhat ushering in that middle of the road nonesense.
Enjoyed your video Chris. I suppose the band/artist that I don't get/don't like is Led Zeppelin! Even though I like Paul McCartney to a degree, some of the stuff he's released is downright terrible, obviously the song you mentioned with the Frog Chorus but surely the one song of his that grates with me is 'C Moon'. I thought this was funny, watch towards the end for it. Cheers! : th-cam.com/video/kXILMn7fk7g/w-d-xo.html
Hi Chris spot on about Coldplay absolute earache I’d rather listen to a toilet flushing 🙁also absolutely spot on about 80s hair rock absolute garbage all of it my personal pet hate bands the eagles and you already mentioned Coldplay have a wonderful rest of your week mate STEVE
Pink Floyd for me. Just don't get it 😅 Also, Oasis (apart from their first album). As you say, probably the most overrated band ever. BUT I love Queen, especially their early stuff, so we'll have to agree to disagree on that one. Oh and yes, Mull of Kintyre is just awful!!
Hi Chris . Fun video I remembered that you don’t like the flute so no surprise you’re no lover of Tull , John & Morrison don’t do it for me .. I can’t stand led zeppelin..that’s a minority view on TH-cam 😀. Have a great 2025 👍
Another fine video (although I disagree with about half of your selections). Here are my top? 10 in no particular order. Red Hot Chili Peppers Leonard Cohen Grateful Dead Georgia Satellites Thirteenth Floor Elevators (That jug.......) Bon Jovi Capt Beefheart Oasis Nirvana Ozzy (solo)
Thanks for explaining why I cannot connect with your opinions.
You’re most welcome. 🤣
U2 is a band I’ve never really connected with. I like a few things, but it always amazes me how they were so massive.
Great shout. It’s more Bono I don’t like than the band tbf
I could not agree more. Horrible, pompous, turgid, band. I saw them live on the “War” tour to see what all the fuss was about. They bored me to tears.
The edge likes to nick other guitarists riffs
He hung around with BB King and thought he was a blues man, Nicked Andy Gill,s sound effect etc ,Uses the Bo Diddley .
I can't tell the difference between U2 and Rush (or maybe between the caterwauling of Bono and Geddy Lee). Drives me out of the room in an instant.
Haha! I totally agree with you on all counts. Actually very spooky how aligned my tastes seem to be with yours. Your list is absolutely identical to mine. So fun to hear you say what I have said so often about many of these lauded artists. 😅
Good to hear sir
Great idea for a video. Don’t see a problem in you voicing your opinion so honestly. I’ve watched enough of your videos to understand your taste in music and many of the artists you mention fall outside of your sphere. Just as an aside i wonder what you think of Stephen Wilson and the various bands he has been associated with?
Don’t know much about him tbh. Need to investigate further. Seems an interesting fella. Cheers Ian, Chris
Love this kind of videos 😅
Thanks for watching. Glad you liked it. There were so many contenders.
Thank you for your kind words and support. I understand Queens appeal but that guitar!!! Me and Drake are done I’m afraid. Cheers fella, Chris
oh yeah, and I am glad it isn't just me that finds original The Who Live at Leeds album a bit meh. I remember back in the mid 70 s ( I was 15yo) and critics were still raving about how good it was. When I eventually got the album and discovered it was just 5 songs and a 15 minute medley, I couldn't believe the fuss. Now the deluxe version that was released in 2016 is much more like it.
Not heard the deluxe. The original is the absolute definition of underwhelming.
Never apologise for an opinion. Spot on with your assessment of Oasis. You won't agree with me on this one but Patti Smith falls into this category for me.
@@blastmatic I understand why people might not like Patti smith tbh
I'm with you on most of these Chris, although not the Van Morrison live LP and Nick Drake. Here's a weird thing though, I can objectively say Captain Fantastic is my all time favourite album, I think it is outstanding in every possible way. Great video though and some brave choices (but where we're U2?) 😮 😆
Both U2 and Springsteen were contenders! Cheers Terry
I agree re Captain Fantastic. But it was his last truly great album as far as I am concerned.
I will try again but I can’t promise anything
@@staggerlee6794 Agreed, although I did like the swagger of Rock Of The Westies
@ haha! As I always say "we can't like everything!"
Great video, Chris. Your shows are so well presented. I don't get most of the bands you mentioned.
I understand why most of them are popular but just can’t get into them. Cheers Pat
@@TheVinylOrchard Yes, Chris I can understand, I got hammered in some comments on my video. But if I don't get them, I don't get them.
Yep! Absolutely agree with all of your choices. Glad you didn’t mention any of my favourite artists though!
Phew!
Just watched this video sound off as someone was working...saw you wave about a Jethro Tull album and am currently assembling an angry mob with flaming torches. Then saw you waft a Nick Drake album and have upscaled to full size assault force with branding irons.
I welcome their arrival. 🤣
@MrWD61 Beatles and stones. Nicely controversial Roy. The white album by Beatles is an absolute crock of shite
A model airplane. Love that Andy. Loathsome bloke for me is Liam G
This amused me so much I watched it 3 times! Coldplay’s Parachutes does have some great songs, but after that they went $$$.
Some stick for U2 in the comments. I loved their first 3 albums, shame about the rest.
U2 didn’t receive much love for sure. Thanks for your support!
Springsteen was a major contender tbh. He plays long sets. 3hrs?! Can you imagine how tedious that would be!
@TheVinylOrchard indeed. Don't know about Dancing in the Dark I'd be Snoozing in the Dark 🤣
@moose6509 🤣
Totally agree about Springsteen ,yawn rock
@@TheVinylOrchard enough to give an aspirin a headache ,what a yawn boss
Foo Fighters had a moment when their first album was released in 1995 when the idea of the "band" was just Dave Grohl making a record by himself at home and playing most/all of the instruments in the tradition of early Todd Rundgren, Stevie Wonder or Prince. Never understood them as a band after they started touring. Everything anyone needs to know about "hair metal" can be seen in two hilarious "documentaries" from the 1980s: Penelope Spheeris's "The Decline of Western Civilizaton 2: The Metal Years" and "This Is Spinal Tap." No more needs to be explained.
@@bacarandii spinal tap is hilarious
Johnnie Walker was a sad loss. Cheers Mark. Have a lovely weekend
I’m a bit undecided about genesis tbh. Ditto Radiohead. Underwhelming frankly. It’s all beautifully subjective. Cheers Peter
Great vid Chris. Actually a subject I've been toying with to do myself, but just haven't. I may do down the line.
I'm in agreement with some of these for certain. At the end of the day, it's all subjective isn't it - so hopefully nobody will take offence or unsubscribe!
Music is very subjective isn’t it. But Flute in rock music should be banned.
Great video Chris, I feel the same about Radiohead. After Yellow-Coldplay became utter nonsense.
Ian .
Know very little about Radiohead tbh. They passed me by
Interesting video Chris, I'm with you on a lot of these i.e.
Bizarrely I have records by this lot. Motley Crue. Just a load of shite to my ears. Talentless. Cheers my friend, Chris
There are a few for me some we have in common Oasis ,coldplay ,motley crue, van morrison and Foo fighters.
Others, for me are Smiths/Morrissey ,U2 pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin.
I get completely why people don’t care for those you mentioned. Cheers Robert, chris

70s Aerosmith we’re ok. 80/90s not so

At college, all the lads were into ELP and Yes, I didn't get them at all...
Prog isn’t for everyone for sure!
Early Queen possibly
Great video Chris - Controversial... possibly. Honest... definitely. As I suspected, I concur with 90% of your picks. I would have to swap out Queen for The Smiths. They make music to slit your wrists to IMO, a bit like Nick Drake. Thanks for this post, really enjoyed it. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Cheers Jonathan. I cam late to the Smiths. Don’t mind them. Having said that I never play them nowadays. Nick Drake. Dreary shite
Derivative overhyped nonsense
Cheers Tone. Thursday beer required. Flares optional.
Thank you for your honesty video. It is not an easy topic to hang in this community...
I guess not. I find music is so subjective Cheers
Agree with all except for Wings and the Who. The Who really shocked me! I would replace those two with U2 and Guns n' roses on my part.
Good choices. I have really tried with the Who. But there’s probably a reason I never play them. Cheers!
Agree totally apart from oasis im a Northern guy and they are great livdon't forget ebony and ivory with Stevie w how sickly was that from McCartney
I do understand in the main why people like them but I can’t connect with Gallagher brothers on any level. Cheers, Chris
@@TheVinylOrchard When you described the brothers as "loathsome" I nearly choked on my bran flakes from laughing.
Cheers!
Could easily rattle off another ten!!
@@jamesgriffithsmusic I always thought Keith moon was rubbish. Unnecessarily loud
Agree with nearly all your choices, Bar Nick Drake and early Elton John.
Old Drakey seems very popular
@@TheVinylOrchard I have to confess that I only got into Nick Drake very recently ( last 3 years or so).

Whilst Queens early stuff is ok, that guitar goes through me. Kiss have about 5 good songs
I cant connect with The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Queen, Foo Fighters, Pink Floyd. I have tried and tried.
I can a bit with the Beatles. But…the White album for me is an overblown crock of shite

Coldplay's first couple of albums i enjoyed, but the follow ups are just bad.
The Who and Queen were a surprise.... they are on the list of bands that the assumption is everyone likes them. And yes I do, both easily make my top five bands.
I found the Who to be bombastic and unnecessarily noisy. Keith Moon exemplified that overly noisy thing for me
@@TheVinylOrchard Keith Moon was certainly a one off.

Hi Chris, interesting subject and choices. Agree with some, disagree with others but that’s ok. Focus gets away with the flute playing I reckon, and one band I never got on with was Kiss.
The flute has no place in rock music for me. I’m banning it
Well Chris nice start to the year to put the cat amongst the pigeons i think any big artist is in the firing line you did well going for some jugulars and in most cases they were musical not personal.
If melancholy means dreariness then you’re right my friend
u2, fairport convention, queen ,coldplay, foo fighters, pearl jam, dream theatre, kiss, the clash, aerosmith, so many bands that i don't really like. so many less well known bands that make better music in my opinion. this is what makes the world interesting

Bizarrely I liked the Queen film

Interestingly whilst I like LZ, I do understand why people might think that they are hugely overrated.
@@eddierafferty3640 we all have artists we don’t get. Phil Collins is another example tbh!!

Agreed Genesis really leave alot to be desired Trick of the tail is shocking
Pasi
ELO. Great shout Pasi. The who. Can’t stand Keith moon. Horrendously and unnecessarily noisy
@jamesgriffithsmusic It's so MOR and cheesy James - just one step up from The Frog Chorus and Grandad 🤣!
Heart stopping bagpipes. Don’t get me started on folk either.
Tumbleweed connection is my personal favourite
He did get patchy in late 70s and after, but I felt at Glastonbury his performance was incredible
Enjoyed video
Cheers Paul. It’s just so wonderfully subjective isn’t it!
Me and Nick Drake are done I’m afraid. It’s over
Sitting here waiting for The Smiths. Similarly, I really can't be bothered with Talking Heads, Gang Of Four and especially The Fall. Really interesting subject. Also, it seems important to like a song or two by bands you don't like. So for example, I like Victoria by Mark E. Smith's lot 😂
Bruce Springsteen leaves me cold as do Motorhead.

Have heard of them and will investigate. Cheers sir!

I pa,n to do a deep purple live album video fairly soon in fact. There are a lot!
you gotta be outta your mind if you can't enjoy Coldplay. im with u on foo fighters, thats awfully dull, RHCP make good singles but so so albums
Just not my thing I’m afraid. Cheers, chris
Agree with most but queen early elton and tull excellent for me anyway
@jamesgreig4805 we all hear things differently. Don’t mind some early queen. Until the solos
There is at least one guitar solo that May didn't use his Red Special on, Crazy Little Thing. He used a Telecaster on that!
@@TheVinylOrchardtotally agree we hear things differently that's the beauty of music if we all agreed it would be boring 😊
Agree with with most except McCartney and Nick Drake.
I’ve tried with Nick Drake. Too depressing
Owned several albums and really wanted to like their music, but …
On the flip side, what is/are your guiltiest secret musical love/s, Chris? Mine is probably The Bangles …
Guilty pleasures - there’s an idea for a video! 😂
@ … probably a double album’s worth, complete with gatefold sleeve … I look forward to it!
They are a dreary mystery to me too.
Strangely, I do understand why people might not like Led Zeppelin
Hi Chris spot on about Coldplay absolute earache I’d rather listen to a toilet flushing 🙁also absolutely spot on about 80s hair rock absolute garbage all of it my personal pet hate bands the eagles and you already mentioned Coldplay have a wonderful rest of your week mate STEVE
Cheers Steve. Have a great week my friend
Pink Floyd for me. Just don't get it 😅
Also, Oasis (apart from their first album). As you say, probably the most overrated band ever.
BUT I love Queen, especially their early stuff, so we'll have to agree to disagree on that one.
Oh and yes, Mull of Kintyre is just awful!!
Music is so wonderfully subjective
@ it really is. My brother called me a philistine for not liking Pink Floyd 😂
@lubilou64 fair 🤣
@@TheVinylOrchard 😂😂😂
Hi Chris . Fun video I remembered that you don’t like the flute so no surprise you’re no lover of Tull , John & Morrison don’t do it for me .. I can’t stand led zeppelin..that’s a minority view on TH-cam 😀. Have a great 2025 👍
I can fully understand how some people wouldn’t like Led Zeppelin tbh. Cheers Rob
Agree on Queen, I like a few of their singles but don't like Brian May's guitar or those double tracked vocals they seem to do on every single track.
Hell yeah. The double track vocal. Another factor in my dislike of them.
Oasis and Stone Roses for me, i never got the hype.
Stone roses. Great shout John
@johnord684 happy Mondays were even more irrelevant, poseurs
@nickwortmann566 certainly were
Another fine video (although I disagree with about half of your selections). Here are my top? 10 in no particular order.
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Leonard Cohen
Grateful Dead
Georgia Satellites
Thirteenth Floor Elevators (That jug.......)
Bon Jovi
Capt Beefheart
Oasis
Nirvana
Ozzy (solo)
Nice. Someone mentioned REM. Loathe them tbh. Any hip hop and folk too.
