Māori Ki Te Ao means Māori to the World, like sharing our culture to the World. Stan has many tribes that he belongs too (like many of us Māori), but this song pays tribute to his Tūhoe tribe and what their people experienced in the Uruwera’s from the NZ govt. the Kaumatua (elder) with full face tattoo (Mataora) is Tame Iti who the govt considered a radicalist in the 80s & 90s but he was just doing what he felt necessary for his people. He continues to do things for his people ♥️
As Maori myself, I can guarantee you will be welcomed as family(whanau) and leave as life long brothers bonded. Hospitality is a cornerstone of our culture ❤
First of all, this is the second Stan Walker reaction I've seen from you guys, and I have to say that it has been quite refreshing to hear some meaningful discussions about the content of Stan's videos. It isn't often that you see many reactors that actually understand what Stan is trying to convey. Keep up the great content, guys! Secondly, I've been seeing a lot of comments that seem to downplay or are downright misinforming reactors about the production of this music video and of the I Am music video, and I thought I would "say" something about it. The "friend" who filmed both music videos is not simply just that. His name is Shae Sterling, and he has been working in film production for almost 29 years. He has his own website, and according to that, he has won several awards and has directed and filmed music videos both internationally (for Snoop Dogg and Sheila E) but mostly for local artists (in New Zealand). The fact that I Am was written and filmed in two weeks was because they were given a strict deadline; the song was written for the movie Origin, directed by Ava Duvernay. If you look at the description of the I Am music video on TH-cam, it lists all the people involved in making it. They will probably all have websites or social media as well and you can look up their credentials. I just think it is nice to give credit when credit is due. OK rant over lol and back to watching the reaction.
This is hilarious to me. Way to undersell Tama Iti. I guess he'd approve but Tama is one of the greatest leaders and revolutionaries of Aotearoa. Seeing him in this was like... Malcolm X popping up in a music video to support the artist. That's the impact of his legacy.
Thank you for reacting to Stan.... He is an inspiring artist and human being..... His story should be made into a movie....... It would have to be directed by Shay Sterling who is the incredible talent who collaborated with Stan to make his Music videos.💖💖💖

10 out of 10 reaction for your amazing insights of Stans music, Stan only sings songs with a purpose, as u dive deeper into his songs u will see what i mean, just amazing 😊
Kia ora. Loved your reactions and appreciation of our culture. 🫶🏽 I’m not surprised at how spot on you were in your interpretations prior to reading the English lyrics, you felt the wairua (spirit) of the message and you got it! A little history, the significance of the “push” for te reo Māori is that in my grandparents era (early-mid 1900’s) they were forbidden to speak Māori at school (even physically punished) and as a result many of us (mostly boomers/millennials etc) did not grow up learning or speaking it at home. Some tribes have done well to preserve their dialects and many have grown up with it, but those of us who didn’t are now a part of the resurgence, learning it as adults (can you imagine?!) and trying to restore it to keep it going and ground us in our culture.
As a white New Zealander we have great respect for the Maori culture. We have the English national anthem and also it is done in Maori. Our schools teach the Maori language, also our government has a Maori party. So the culture is strong over here. I have great respect for Stan by staying true to his culture. New Zealand is one.
I wish this was truer than it really is. It’s a beautiful dream, & I’m glad you feel that way, but the reality is far more divided. Especially now, with this current government. Honour, Te Tiriti
@@eastchchkea6475 I think a lot of us feel like maryannesmith but are also aware that the likes of our current government are doing all they can to sow division because they didn't like the great strides taken over the last decade or two and want to put the handbrake back on.
@@MoamanlyI don’t understand how any of you could ever feel like that when this whole thing started with the annihilation of an entire culture, language, way of being and they’re still trying to keep it that way. Anytime Maori culture rears its head in “mainstream” they do everything to shove it back down and erase it entirely. Obviously there are people that aren’t racist but come on its pretty delusional to ever think that Maori are an inclusion instead of a parasite they had to tolerate.
The scenery in I Am is the parts of New Zealand where Stan and his wife’s tribes come from - the scenery is as it is now - Stan’s lyrics are all about the culture - how indigenous cultures have changed - all over the work cultures have been changed - Native American Indians have had culture taken away from them for eg - Stan advocates for the acceptance and resurgence of all cultures learning their roots and rebuilding it again - bringing it all back into life in a positive way - people find themselves again
Yayyy!!! ❤ I wondered when you were gonna react to this, awesome reaction, you guys are awesome. Thank you so much guys for doing my requests and i look forward to seeing more of your reactions to Stan's Catalog! ❤😊 Lol yip my fault!! Sorry NOT sorry hehe...
Great reaction from both and King Bro your pronunciation was pretty good. I like they way you both give your perspective "world view through your lens" prior to you seeing the lyrics. Keep going down the Stan Walker rabbit hole and he has a few live songs that you will enjoy and love his talent and gift to bless us with.
Stan has written amazing songs about things we face…try… I am the colour Bigger Human New Light Loved loved reaction…words you both spoke were so genuine. Thankyou ❤
My brothers, Your own indigenous peoples have been saying the same thing for hundreds of years now, yet you didn't hear them! Theirs is the exact same message! I am Stan's cousin. Listen to what your heart is saying now and remember the words my indigenous whaanau in America. There is time for us to grow further.
Yeah you almost got the pronunciation 100% you are so interesting to listen to and the comments from other kiwis are fantastic , there was a bit of sneaking around the cutting down flag poles to take the piss out of the British troops etc.
If you guys know who Michael Bublé is, well he actually mentored Stan many years ago, back when Stan was on Australian Idol. Michael said that God had kissed Stan’s throat and blessed him with a gift, because that’s how amazing his voice was, even back when he was only 18 years old. One line I remember Michael saying to Stan was “It’s hard when you’re a singer, and you meet a better singer than you, and get told to mentor them.” Benji and Joel Madden from Good Charlotte, also commented that Stan had an old timey kind of sounding voice that was very rare.
I’ve left so many comments under your video, I’m sorry for bugging you😂😂 But when you guys spoke about Stan’s range, and how it sounds like he sings with the age and experience from his tribe as well as with like a modern pop kind of sound, and when you guys asked what inspired him and his music; I found that very interesting. Stan grew up in the church singing Gospel (which he has expanded on a lot more in recent years). He went to Australian Idol when he was 18 and won, then released his first album, which was definitely more pop inspired. He’s been through a lot of turmoil and tragedy through his life, which inspired his music too, and he’s obviously doing more reggae styled hits now, as well. He’s unapologetically being himself and expressing himself through his Māori language and heritage, which brings off a very spiritual sense in his music. He’s incredible!!
I loved your comments especially about those in power would like to separate them...spot on. Tuhoe people are known as Children of the Mist. I love this song, he's so talented and can sing in so many different styles. The old man is Tame Iti a Maori radical who shot at the flag and said he'd wipe his arse on the queens flag. I was pissing myself laughing about the filming of the vid for I Am being done on a phone. In an interview, Stan said he had to climb the mountain in his outfit to take the waterfall shots and he's shivering in between the shots of him in the water. Some reactors thought he'd spent thousands on that clip because it is so beautiful and looks professional. The whole thing from writing the song, filming and editing was done in 21/2 weeks. They did an incredible job of such a beautiful song that touched the soul of so many!
Love your reactions to Stan's music, thoughtful and thorough, and understanding the spirit of te Reo Māori, te Ao Māori (the Māori language, the Māori world). Within this song is a famous Māori Whakatauki (proverb) which caught your attention "Tama tū tama ora, tama noho tama mate" (to take action is to live, to be idle is to die). Our tīpuna (ancestors) were so clever to create proverbs that knowledge could easily be passed down. Each iwi (tribe) has famous whakatauki, that when you hear it you can often know which tribe the speaker is from. However often the meaning can be universally used by us all. For instance looking at your shark poster in the background brings to mind a famous whakatauki from te iwi Ngāti Porou (my tribe & one of Stans tribes), i.e. "Kia mate ururoa, kei mate wheke" or Kaua e mate wheke me mate ururoa" (Die like a shark, not like a limp octopus), one translation of this is don't give up so easily, fight for what you want, give it your all.
If you boys visited NZ, you could easily pass as locals, either Maori or one of the other Polynesian groups. Come visit NZ, you'll definitely be welcomed here. NZ is absolutely beautiful.
Tena Korua (Hello to you 2) wow i absolutely loved your guy's Reaction ❤ Stan grew up around Māori Music with a lot of Musical influences from a lot of different Genres. E.g. Bob Marley and even Beyonce who he got to open up at a concert for in 2013 i think it was. After his Stomach Surgery he had to relearn how to sing and his Sound is just beautifully mastered. Stan is that Artist who not only can sing impeccably but he can make you feel the music too, much Love
"I''d be listening more thanI'd be talking" thank you for that. Thank you for sharing your conversations and depth - Stan is whānau (family) and a great ambassador for all the issues you have talked about. Caring for the earth, caring for each other, learning from our ancestors, giving to our descendants. Kia ora
Do amazing grace next !! He sings it so differently! Do the live one, and if yall don't wanna cry, then call me a lier ! He's singing it because he got a second chance ! Next one please xx
I'm proud to be Maori, I'm not from where he is from. I'm from Ngapuhi, Ngai to Poto, Kaikohe and Stan Walker is such a humble young man he has a beautiful soul and really family oriented which is excellent!😊 I meet him in 2010 after winning Australian idol in 2009, he came to Te Runanga o Kirikiriroa (Hamilton) 😊😊😊😊
Maori singers love reggae and R&B in their music. New Zealand has a number of really amazing songs. Bob Marley came to New Zealand and connected with the Maori community 100%. Tama Iti is the elderly man - from Stan's iwi. He is from the region Ngai Tuhoi and they have to defend their culture. You get their connections wiht the whenua [land]. Maori are kaitiaki - protectors of the land. They keep their culture alive through kakahaka. They did a haka in the song. Stan speaks English but is fluent in Maori.
Best reaction to Stan on TH-cam. You understand what he’s about and conversed on the topic and feelings he invoked in u. Māori are the people, the culture of New Zealand, TeReo is the language and Tuuhoe is just one of the tribes Stan is from, but this song is representing with his tuuhoe whanau (family). Māori believe that we are guardians of the land, not owners of it. To be passed on to our children along with our traditions.❤
Maori people have an infinity to Reggae music, Bob Marley was a huge inspiration and influence to our people, Stan sings many genres but he definitely loves to showcase our Maori culture with pride in all its natural traditions
I am, is part of sound track of the movie thts is based on Travon, the young teen tht got followed by tht security guy and said he was acting suspicious and shot him fo no reason. i am is a represntation imo of knwing who you are, remembering tht a higher energy albeit god has ur back to give u strentgh and to never forget where u come from, the land, the water, the wind, ur ansectors ..are with you and to stand strong. keep looking forward, stand strong, be uniqely you.
Kia ora korua reMARKable me King Bro. Listen to his remakes of songs from top artist like Prince and Purple Rain . Once you listen to his version you'll find a lot more top of the charts waiata hes revamped and made his own take on revival. If you ever decide to visit Aotearoa New Zealand be ready to be surprised, amazed and in the moment. Nau mai haere mai ki Aotearoa.
Māori people are the indigenous people of New Zealand with many different tribes! Reo Māori is Māori language! Māori ki te ao is Māori to the world! 😊.
Watch 'Rain of the Children' directed by Vincent Ward. Somewhere on TH-cam are short documentaries shot by Vincent when he was young of the woman and her son. It's very powerful and there's history and cultural norms of the Tūhoe people discussed in the film.
It's funny you mentioned 'Gorilla Warfare'... Maoris were actually studied for this by the British and what they learnt was incorporated into the British defence force education moving forward...
King Bro I can see your so overtaken by the concept, spirit and vibe of this waiata (song) it touches your soul right. Like your opinions and thoughts.
New Zealand has its own reggae called nz reggae you should look into such a vibe, thanks for watching Māori videos and helping keeping our culture alive 😇
19:52 It's not really an inspiration, its more what we do something that comes natural to us. If you watch any haka from Te Matatini you will see that anyone performing has that same power in their voice. Our voices they come from our pride for our culture, our mana, our wairua (spirit), our sense of knowing our Turunga Waewae (where we are from), our ancestors and how they fought for us, our own fight for our culture (our politics are trying to shut our culture down, they have a bill and everything. But thats another conversation). Our voices come from that and much much more. But Stan's different, he's had to learn how to sing all over again which made him work harder then any of us in the practice of using our voices. He did have stomach cancer but also his whole stomach was removed.
i dont know if youve realised but your video content about finding out what the lyrics meant has done exactly what Stan wants 'spread it wide, release'. Thank you
Yay, finally people who have obviously done some research. Too often reactors will just blindly watch and comment on Stan's video not knowing a damn thing about the culture. Kudos to you both at least you're respectful. Btw your pronunciation is spot on! 👍Come visit..... you'll love us! 😜
Hi guys I just love your reactions! Can you please react to Human! It’s emotional and Ultralight Beam! You will love it and I would love to hear your reactions
He's describing his mana of his land, people, tribe, pride, and then the chorus is him saying he loves it, thats him, thats us we are Maori of the world. The open eyes is called a "pukana" its a intimidation, threat used of strength to enemies and the shouting if the warriors in haka, war formation. He loves being Maori and everything about Maori, past, present and future.
An interesting fact about Stan, he left the big music company that signed him after he won Australian idol, bcos they tried to make him drop his culture, and he even wrote a song about it, called I AM the Colour
What you said at 7 mins is such a heartbreaking reality for so many and coming to the realisation that English was never supposed to be your first language, the ability to teach our children our language was stripped from us so when we finally got the chance to use it again, fuck all remembered what it was or didnt know how to pass it on anymore. Like say a grandparent trying to teach a grandchild they barely see because they were never able to teach their own child. Hardly anyone cares about whether or not it survives. Plenty of people say never mind using it for business and govt fuck all people can speak it or understand it so its pointless..the amount of complaints just from using the Maori word for Police ALONGSIDE the english word on the side of the patrol cars 🤦🏻♀️ It just doesn’t work so our culture/language has all but died.
If you want to know alil about stan walker and our culture...just search (Maori) and (Haka) also (Kapa Haka) there's a ton of formation and video's out there!
Hi guys. I'm luvn yr reactions. New sub, here. Cud you react to Stan's cover, of Kanye Wests, Ultra Light Beam, also his song, 'I am the colour.' and 'New Take Over.' He has many, many, more. They are all, uplifting and empowering. His version of Amazing Grace, will truly, take you to church. You'll need a box of tissues.

He explains how they wrote the song and shot the video in like 2weeks,were we are from in NZ,it’s even more mind blowing knowing the story behind it
Love your reaction, highly recommend "He kakano ahau" by Stan
He’s such a great storyteller & he’s even better LIVE! 🇳🇿🖤
Props to your pronunciation I appreciate the effort.. he pai tō reo/your language or pronounciation is good
Stan was born in Melbourne, but he was bought up in Mt Maunganui he is from Tuhoe, Ngai Te Rangi & Ngati Porou decent🫂...
Amazing reaction
Stan was blessed by God with a beautiful voice, and the gift to preach to others!!
@@Bellenickna Thank you very much 🙏
churr mean i watched your reaction to i am also ..bloody awesome ..Tu Meke, Ka Pai ✌️
Maori people have an infinity to Reggae music, Bob Marley was a huge inspiration and influence to our people, Stan sings many genres but he definitely loves to showcase our Maori culture with pride in all its natural traditions
He was not born in Australia he went to live there with his parents when he was younger he lives in NZ with his wife and children now
The actress was in the movie The Help, she was the maid who got arrested
I am, is part of sound track of the movie thts is based on Travon, the young teen tht got followed by tht security guy and said he was acting suspicious and shot him fo no reason. i am is a represntation imo of knwing who you are, remembering tht a higher energy albeit god has ur back to give u strentgh and to never forget where u come from, the land, the water, the wind, ur ansectors ..are with you and to stand strong. keep looking forward, stand strong, be uniqely you.

Māori people are the indigenous people of New Zealand with many different tribes! Reo Māori is Māori language! Māori ki te ao is Māori to the world! 😊.
Hey! ... you pronounced it perfectly!! haha awesome 🥰ka mau te weehi brother, love it. Ka pai from another Maori over here in Aotearoa. thank you!
Watch 'Rain of the Children' directed by Vincent Ward. Somewhere on TH-cam are short documentaries shot by Vincent when he was young of the woman and her son. It's very powerful and there's history and cultural norms of the Tūhoe people discussed in the film.
brothers you should check out ultrabeam light kayne remix its dope
It's funny you mentioned 'Gorilla Warfare'... Maoris were actually studied for this by the British and what they learnt was incorporated into the British defence force education moving forward...
I think you guys are indigenous to wherever youre broadcasting from. You both just seem to get the message!!
King Bro I can see your so overtaken by the concept, spirit and vibe of this waiata (song) it touches your soul right. Like your opinions and thoughts.
Love you're pronunciation brother, it's hard to speak Maori, but you did well, He Maori Ahau, I am Maori
New Zealand has its own reggae called nz reggae you should look into such a vibe, thanks for watching Māori videos and helping keeping our culture alive 😇
Stan Walker - Aotearoa next please
North/East facing of Mt Ruapehu North Island Nz. Off the desert rd Waiouru SH1.
@@Ash_Leigha It’s an Inspiration to the rest of the world to appreciate and respect the earth .

Yay, finally people who have obviously done some research. Too often reactors will just blindly watch and comment on Stan's video not knowing a damn thing about the culture. Kudos to you both at least you're respectful. Btw your pronunciation is spot on! 👍Come visit..... you'll love us! 😜

TUHOI his iwi, tribe, I feel you are tribal tattoo, both you and whanau, family are welcome in AOTEAROA nz
awesome reaction brothers. huge up to you both, your pronunciation is pretty good too. check out the movie The Convert
Good pronunciation brothers 👍🏼
If you want to know alil about stan walker and our culture...just search (Maori) and (Haka) also (Kapa Haka) there's a ton of formation and video's out there!
