    • @SilverCanary1
      @SilverCanary1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Guilherme Konrath heated washer jets have been an option on most new cars in the uk for about 20 years. There aren't many block warmers here though, unlike in Norway; maybe some on vehicles in northern Scotland...

    • @AlexChama
      @AlexChama 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SilverCanary1 Yeah the problem isn't really defrosting the windscreen only and getting it clean, the problem is the fluid getting frozen in the container, no? Unless the heating elements heat up the container as well it's not of much help. Additionally the fluid is supposed to prevent residual moisture from freezing giving you a thin but very unpleasant coating of ice. You can probably mix it a little less concentrated, but even just the chance of your heating elements having a malfunction would deter me from relying on them solely. :/

    • @SilverCanary1
      @SilverCanary1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AlexChama I have not yet seen a washer bottle with a heater in it though in some cases the washer bottle is inside the back of the car (usually only for rear wash) but this wouldn't help much first thing in the morning.
      However, having the bottle in side the car may help keep it warmer than the ambient temperature outside as it would keep off the wind. My car a 99 focus has its wsher bottle inside the wing/fender and behind the front wheel. it is wrapped in a plastic foam coat and also has a block of polystyrene nearby; all this is protected by the wheel arch liner which completely seals the bottle in its little nest and this, I think has helped it to so far never freeze solid. all the pipes and the pump are also entombed, apart from the jets which on my car aren't heated though it is a feature that could be fitted from the factory.
      Early mondeos used to suffer from washer pipes freezing up and the pump blowing off the pipes to the washers and the fluid would then be sprayed onto the floor. The bottle was located behind the front bumper and infront of the wheels and while it was encased in undershields and the plastic arch liner, it had no insulation to speak of and heat front the engine wouldn't very well radiate forward especially while driving or even while stationary.
      If your car can't be garaged enough to stop the washer fluid from freezing then if the design permits, try to wrap the bottle with some adequate insulation or buy a car where the bottle is in a better place. I suppose if you had the motivation or paid someone else to do it the washer bottle could be moved but I'm pretty sure most problems can be cured by buying/mixing the right strength of fluid...

    Bjorn, I bought -20C washer fluid from the supermarket a couple of years ago.
    It was about 0.80 Euro for a 5 liter bottle.
    It doesn't freeze as a whole, but it does if you spray it over a cold windshield, even if there's -5C outside.
    I bought -30C from the gas station, it's better quality and doesn't freeze when sprayed, tested at -18C.

    I buy the concentrate in 25L size and use it neat. All year. In the summer it cleans off the bugs far better than mixed. It also acts like de-icer and works well down to -8 C .
    Below -8 as soon as you start driving it refreezes with the wind chill factor.

  • @victorseal9047
    @victorseal9047 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Here in Québec all the washer fluid is ready mixed for either -30c to -45c and we carry on using it through the summer months. With below zero temperatures occurring for 6 months of the year it’s not worth the hassle of changing it.

  • @dcvariousvids8082
    @dcvariousvids8082 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I do as you. Buy concentrate; usually when there’s buy two get one free. I normally have what I call a medium mix , (summer & down to +8°C). And a winter mix, (down to -20°C) in ready mixed containers. It never gets down to the latter here but it ensures, that the mix in the uninsulated small bore feed tubes never freezes. If I’m going on a long trip in winter, I’ll also carry a litre of undiluted screen wash. Good for cleaning winter toad muck off side windows & lights. Plus I can refill the tank at the other end dilute.

  • @finvka1
    @finvka1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    :) This is very common here in Finland also. I do the same. But mainly for the price. And Biltema concentrate is good stuff! Many of the pre-mixed solutions sold at service stations can't handle the temperatures stated on the can. Biltema's concentrate at 1:1 mix gives -30 or -31 deg C when measuring with a refractometer. By far the best price to quality ratio. This was the first time I heard of that additive, have to go and check local Biltema. We have the same problem with highly persistent salt schmutz here

    Seems like a big hassle for what ur getting. I bought 5L last night at the Lidl for €6 pre mixed wiper fluid that is usable at -60 degrees. Not that the winter here in the Netherlands is ever going below -20 but still nice to know that itll work

    • @finvka1
      @finvka1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The -60 solution sold at Lidl can't handle -60... Test it with a refractometer and share the results. All the high number cheap solutions sold at cheap stores (or Lidl) perform badly compared to their claimed temp readings. I have tested almost every solution on the market for decades now and I always use refractometer to test it, raw and mixed. Only way to make sure.

    • @finvka1

    You can also do it yourself completely. It is cheaper still and more eco friendly. You need distilled water, methanol (which is dirt cheap), a bit of window soap (your additive probably got you covered) and a few drop of food colorant to give you a visual clue that this is not water. Roughly you need your mixture to have the same percentage of alcool as the temperature below zero. So to be good at -15C, you need 15% alcool in it. That’s it. If you want something less toxic, replace the methanol with ethanol.

  • @ThomasOrdon
    @ThomasOrdon 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    And not only that when you're buying the concentrated it's more for commercial applications because they're going to mix a big batch and use a big batch at once there's a methyl Alcohol and Other agents in there that evaporate basically really quickly and that's why the pre-mixed in this case is actually better even though it still evaporates in the car being mixed it evaporates at a weigh less rate than when it's in concentrate form science should explain that

      Alagae should not be a problem as long as you don't use straight tap water. As long as you mix it with the concentrate, nothing will grow in there.
      And in Norway, the water is usually very "soft", so mineral buildup should not be a problem either.

      Have you actually tested that version with a refractometer? Most of the -50 or -60 solutions sold in Finland are crap, they can only handle -30 or -35 max. Biltema's can says -30 at 1:1 and it delivers -30 or -31, year after year. Have been using many different solutions for decades now and always go back to Biltema concentrate because it gives best real world performance for the money. And even during the harshest winters, I never use anything heavier than -30 solution, because that only freezes solid at -50 or -60 deg C. The pump of the car can't pump it after -32, but I never need to use screen washers at -30 anyway. If you really have a place where you can get true -70 solution for that money, you can call yourself lucky. Nothing like that sold here or Norway
