In a radio interview here on YT, Sutherland said she could never have sung Turandot onstage because her voice wasn't big enough -- Bonynge promptly said, "absolute rubbish, you could've sung it better than any of them!"
As we all know his judgement about voices was sketchy. Sutherland’s was a half voice because her lower octave was weak because no chestvoice. Also poor diction and acting skills.

I think he has a nice voice that might sound good in musical theater lit, it it’s laughable that someone let him sing these major tenor roles in some of the biggest houses in the world. His agent must be amazing.
After having watched this, I'm waiting now for a director, who comes forward one day and says: "This singing is interfering with my ideas for the production, we'll leave it out!"😂
Yusuf Eyvasov as far from when I call one of my favorite singers. And I do think his marriage (recently divorce) to Miz Netrebko heading nepotistic effect on enhancing his career. I will say that he looks healthier than he has in the past and he sounds better than I would have expected. Please know that I don’t expect much, but I’m kind of happy for him that he sounds better than he has in the past.
Exquisite singing, absurd staging, costumes, and props that detract from the experience, including the constant interruption and annoyance of the descending operating room. I just saw the soprano Radvanovsky in recital yesterday in Atlanta, after which she appeared at a lobby reception. If I had seen this bizarre performance before her recital yesterday, I would’ve waited in line to meet her and ask about the controversy and protests associated with it. The staging spoils the performance.
This production is truly horrifying. I am uncertain as to the nature of the substances that were consumed by those involved in the creation of this production, but it is evident that their judgment was impaired by the shit it was laced with. While I appreciate the value of modern and innovative stagings, this particular interpretation deviates significantly from the intended essence of the opera. Anyone familiar with the opera's narrative would recognize the incongruity of this approach.
I get what they were trying to do, make everything appear otherworldly and all, but it is a bit much...still, I prefer it over minimalism. Also, how amazing to see Martinucci there too
The word Eurotrash comes to mind. I think this is a great role for Radvanovsky, but I understand that she's modifying her vowels quite bit. Also a bit shy at the lower end for technical reasons (like many Turandots nowadays).
Mah!!!???
HONESTLY, what an infuriating production!!! I even defended a clip of 'in questa' on IG saying "now, now, you haven't seen the entire production..." This director has absolutely NO CLUE what they are doing. Sondra is quite possibly one of the best sopranos alive today and they made sure LITERALLY EVERYTHING BUT her voice was the focus. Example- the pp part at the beginning of "in questa'..." The actions of those dressing her are taking away from the moment. The clanging of her costume was louder than the orchestra and singer!! Has the creative team ever seen an opera?! Booooo, boooooo. I hope Sondra is in the hands of a competent director the next time she does this role. We deserve it, she deserves it.
Again? Another self-indulgent, selfish stage direction. The performers deserve better. No matter how splendid the music or the singing, it's all ruined by this strange direction. We don't need these self-satisfying stage directions anymore.
Thank you so much for this, but please give us the names of the other singers as well. Turandot is not only Turandont and Calaf !!! (no matter how wonderful they may be). Or am I just a technological dinosaur unable to find the names ?
Just have a look at the beg of the video no big techno at stake here ;) I don't put too much infos in order to avoid being flagged by the algorythms used to detect 'rights issues' and protect the video from being removed
This was a criative reading of Turandot, besides some fails, much better than the rubbish reparations of Liu that took over in recent productions of this masterpiece
Produzione pessima
Honestly, aside from the artists, this production seems to have bern inspired by Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes, It has some very interesting visual moments, I still can't decide if I like it or not...
Sondra is wonderful, but the production doesn't make any sense at all. It should be in China, not some weird medieval horror film-like European castle. I don't get it but the music is pretty great even though the tempos seem rather slow to me. Brava Sondra!
This is a mess. The director says he want to "uncover the characters from the old Chinese cliches"? By making a top heavy impossibly busy and confused production that makes no sense? He says with "a fresh eye"? I think his vision has cataracts. And why is there a medical operating room that comes and goes? Why is Turandot girdled with knightly armor? This is an embarrassing muddle and nothing of what Puccini would have wanted. Please, Dear Director: Remember that people who come to this opera for the first time will have no idea what it's about and it should be the directors job to clarify. I would never want to pay money to witness this. I appreciate it being on TH-cam so at least I know what the world of opera has come to.
There are 2 recordings of Callas in Turandot (one studio and one live I believe from 1949) ... so maybe you don't like it, but still she sung the role :)
@@Classicvideofan I never said she didn't sing the role. She was never great at it as mentioned in the caption above. I can even go as far to say maybe Turandot is one of her poorest performances ever. Same for Leontyne Price,, who is my GOAT, her Turandot recoring was shockingly so bad.
I'm a big fan of Sondra Radvanovsky, but no, Turandot is not for her! Her voice is somehow too "small". For Turandot you need a voice like a trumpet, like Gena Dimitrova for example. And I feel very sorry that she had to perform together with this Netrebko-Toyboy! 😂

I think he has a nice voice that might sound good in musical theater lit, it it’s laughable that someone let him sing these major tenor roles in some of the biggest houses in the world. His agent must be amazing.
Eyvazov is the possessor of a singularly ugly voice! To boot, some of his high notes were flat and others sharp.
Eyvasov é completamente fuori ruolo...lasciamo perdere la regia...
Turandot me gustó.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Exquisite singing, absurd staging, costumes, and props that detract from the experience, including the constant interruption and annoyance of the descending operating room. I just saw the soprano Radvanovsky in recital yesterday in Atlanta, after which she appeared at a lobby reception. If I had seen this bizarre performance before her recital yesterday, I would’ve waited in line to meet her and ask about the controversy and protests associated with it. The staging spoils the performance.
Perché fanno una produzione così brutta? Sicuramente una bella produzione costerebbe lo stesso.
My Lord, Franco Zefferelli must be turning in his grave. What a stupid production.
and what does Zeff have to do with this? did he compose this?
Terrible!
La regia è orribile
This production is truly horrifying.
I am uncertain as to the nature of the substances that were consumed by those involved in the creation of this production, but it is evident that their judgment was impaired by the shit it was laced with. While I appreciate the value of modern and innovative stagings, this particular interpretation deviates significantly from the intended essence of the opera. Anyone familiar with the opera's narrative would recognize the incongruity of this approach.
I get what they were trying to do, make everything appear otherworldly and all, but it is a bit much...still, I prefer it over minimalism. Also, how amazing to see Martinucci there too
The only good thing about this hideous production is Rosa Feola who sings sensitively.
The word Eurotrash comes to mind.
I think this is a great role for Radvanovsky, but I understand that she's modifying her vowels quite bit. Also a bit shy at the lower end for technical reasons (like many Turandots nowadays).
Senza parole...
No wonder we need subtitles.
Ridiculous tempo for Act I finale. A mess.
Mah!!!???
Alas,with a strange tenor !!!!!!!!!!
HONESTLY, what an infuriating production!!!
I even defended a clip of 'in questa' on IG saying "now, now, you haven't seen the entire production..."
This director has absolutely NO CLUE what they are doing.
The production certainly was a car crash.
È straordinario vedere quanti insegnanti di canto scrivono qui! Tutti grandi professionisti!
1:40:58 Why does ge ignore the score??
Is'nt it just a mistake ?
@Classicvideofan it may be to show off. It's a very important part to make a mistake on it. But I don't know
Verdaderamente una payasada. Y donde estaba Kalaf? Se tomo vacaciones? Splendida Sondra!
It' s really very ugly .....poor singers...
😢😢😢
Again? Another self-indulgent, selfish stage direction. The performers deserve better. No matter how splendid the music or the singing, it's all ruined by this strange direction. We don't need these self-satisfying stage directions anymore.
liu is great
Why…
Thank you so much for this, but please give us the names of the other singers as well. Turandot is not only Turandont and Calaf !!! (no matter how wonderful they may be). Or am I just a technological dinosaur unable to find the names ?
Just have a look at the beg of the video no big techno at stake here ;) I don't put too much infos in order to avoid being flagged by the algorythms used to detect 'rights issues' and protect the video from being removed
Thanks a bunch !@@Classicvideofan
All the singers' names appear at the end of the video.
there’s something called an Internet search engine
And who is conducting??
This was a criative reading of Turandot, besides some fails, much better than the rubbish reparations of Liu that took over in recent productions of this masterpiece
Produzione pessima
She shouldn't have sing this. He shouldn't sing at all. The production is a nightmare and that's the best part of it.
Honestly, aside from the artists, this production seems to have bern inspired by Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes, It has some very interesting visual moments, I still can't decide if I like it or not...
Wonderful!!! Thank you, Vasili Barkhatov!
Horrible produccion!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2:41:36
Yes! And don't forget Meda. Sondra is truly the most exciting soprano on today's opera stage.
Sondra is the Best!!!!!!!!!
I agreed 100%… until I heard Asmik sing and act the hell out of this role in Vienna.
A joy to watch and listen to this great opera many thanks.
Il teatro più bello del mondo
With Palais Garnier in Paris IMHO ;)
Great performance! So fresh! Absolutely new approach to the familiar story. Thank you!
This a shame not a good performance. All this has nothing to do with Puccini’s Turandot.
Il resto......
Sondra is wonderful, but the production doesn't make any sense at all. It should be in China, not some weird medieval horror film-like European castle. I don't get it but the music is pretty great even though the tempos seem rather slow to me. Brava Sondra!

Am impressed with Sondra here (even though obviously miked up), thank you! (Calaf, alas, is dreadful.)
A real masterpiece! I wondered how amazing was it 😍😍😍
No, it was not amazing.
No production can surpass the level of nonsense this production has. No disrespect to the singers and the silent cast.
INteresting that other viewers think it is a great production ... event though they are a minority :))
@@Classicvideofan Yeah very few.
My God. What an insulting rendition. I wonder how the singers feel. Can’t they just protest?
What a great performance! Thank you for sharing, had such a strong emotional response. These masks and costumes add the flavor to the music and voices
Are you serious?
Great Radvanovsky but ugly production.
'Sondra is the greatest Turandot since Callas' What do you mean? Callas has never been a great Turandot, not even a good one.
@@Classicvideofan there's only the studio recording. I believe the live recording was robbed
