  • I am SO Glad that Machine head is still writing excellent music! While this is a stray from our usual fare, it was great hearing solid fundamental screaming technique from a band that has been around since the 90s. A solid balance of harsh and clean vocals make this song a solid choice for vocal discussion. Lets hang out and talk about Machine Head!

I must admit I am very rusty on my Machine Head, I'll have to check it out. I'm glad to hear it made a difference though!

If you would want to react to another new track by Machine Head, I would recommend the song "Slaughter the Martyr". Its an absolute banger of a song

You can use 'K' to pause TH-cam videos but also 'J' and 'L' to go backwards and forwards 10 seconds. Arrow keys do 5 seconds. Just a thing that I dont think people know too often and may be helpful. Keep up the great videos!

You can also use "," and "." to go back or forwards frame-by-frame.

Different from what I remember too Mark. You're not alone. 1999s The Blood, the Sweat, the Tears was one of my favorite albums back in late 90s. There was more grit.

Greeetings from Norway! Gratuitous umlauts and ø replacing o is... so silly to me. Those letters have pronunciations... NØ GØDS NØ MASTERS sounds... utterly stupid when said out loud. Mötörhead have nothing on this :P I have an Ø in my name... these things aren't just decorations yo! Just because your alphabet has several letters missing doesn't mean you don't look like some kind of weirdos when you use these :P
Now to watch the video, which I expect I will think is awesome and enjoy immensely :)

Yes! Awesome to see Machine Head here! This is maybe one of the more straight forward songs from the new album, which is awesome btw. Robb Flynn was a huge part of influencing the vocalists of the numetal, metal core and death core scenes! Huge influence on me too. I them live on Friday, and they were amazing! Nailed the vocals live. Also sick moshpit!

Hey Mark, enjoy the channel even though I am no singer. Just like your analysis of the music. You should check out Deafheaven - Incheon Pentaport Rock Festival 2020, right up your alley and great camera work of the vocals. These songs are a live take of two songs, Black Brick and Dream House...

Hey Mark I love your channel. I'm so glad I found it not to long ago. Your content has given me a much greater appreciation for vocals and help me fall in love with deathcore. I'd love to see you do a video on Taylor Barber's cover of "hostage" he does a scream in it I've never heard before and would love to hear your take on it. If not a video at least check it out yourself I think you'd find it very interesting. Keep up the fantastic work and spreading the knowledge

This song is much softer than the MFH I know from decades before, but also much softer than other songs of the recent album.
But....I saw and heard them a week ago in Vienna. And they are still Loud and HEAVY as f#&k!
    Btw ...

I just stumbled on this channel after spotify recommended your latest kardashev album (probably my favorite of the year FYI) and this is amazing stuff. I'll admit that I am fairly ignorant to how vocals work much less metal vocals but I find all of this incredibly interesting how you're supposed to do it. Keep up the great work!

On the new album I liked 'Choke on the Ashes of your Hate' much more than this one, this one is more melodic for sure. But Robb doesn't have much variation in his vocal technique anyway.

You remember correctly. Machine Head did used to be different. They started out with a thrashier, heavier style of metal in their first couple of albums.
Then a couple of nu-metal style albums.
Then 4 more that were a more along the lines of the first 2 albums, but with a bit more polish. The quality of these trailed off a bit on the last couple IMO, leading up to the mess that is 2018’s Catharsis.
That’s a break away for their usual style, into… a whole bunch of different weird styles squashed into a single incoherent album (in a bad way). Maybe be happy you haven’t heard that, although it is amusing to listen to it a little and wonder what they were thinking when they made it.
This album seems to continue on the trajectory the 4 lambing before Catharsis we’re taking (a slightly downward trajectory unfortunately - for my tastes)
Burn My Eyes, The More Things Change and The Blackening are how I like to remember Machine Head, although there are some great songs scattered through their other albums and I did listen to their nu-metal albums a lot when I was younger.

“Smug” seems to be a good way to describe these kind of vocals. I call them “tough guy” vocals 😅 I’m not a big fan of them as they’ve always given me the impression of fake emotion and fake tough guy vibes. It feels like he’s holding back a lot. IDK how else to describe it 😅
    Just my opinion.
