I always come back to these Cosmetology 101 videos to remind me that natural hair care is simple, easy and beautiful. All these made up rules and money schemes make it complicated. AfrikanHairGod was/is ahead of his time. A Legend.
I agree. There are infinite combinations of curl patterns not to mention that many people have a few different textures throughout their hair. In the end you have to learn your hair and be comfortable with it. It's trial and error. It's a journey. Thank you for this video.
i agree that knowing your curl type (3a, 4b, etc) is the least important factor when it comes to knowing your hair. knowing your porosity, texture, and other things you mentioned are more helpful.
I live in a small town outside of Rochester NY and would love to book with you off the strength of the skills and education in hair that you display in your videos. My hair is extremely matted and only took one month to start looking like The Weekends. I have 3 different type of curl patterns and I’m not sure the porosity but I literally have to squeeze it under water for it to get wet and only takes moments for it to air dry. The last time my hair was done was March 24, 2023 when I twisted it a few hours before I had brain surgery but ever since, I hadn’t had the strength to do it especially now that it has free formed locked.
Moknowshair did a video on this a couple months ago & I thought that her info was a game changer. Now, I'm seeing your 2+ year old video & you're clearly ahead of your time. You are incredibly interested & knowledgeable about afro hair in general NOT just your own hair like Most of these hair "gurus". TY
Thank you! I had asked another you tuber Teaundra and she was so nasty in her response I deleted her...ain't nobody go time for that!! Too old for one for cyber BS....your awesome!
Great vid man. Porosity is the only thing there that i can figure right. I can figure out the rest properly, so i build my regimen mostly on porosity and trials and errors. Thanks again for the informations, some friends of mine will loose some hair sooooon :P
Love that you put the strands side by side...I didn't know if I had fine medium or coarse strand and now I do! Very informative video! LOVE YOUR CHANNEL!!!
Yes! Great video, Narada. I recently started caring for my hair in a way specific to its porosity and the appearance of the curl pattern has changed. This just adds to the frivolity of the curl pattern when it's look can change so easily.
This is by far the best video that I have seen on TH-cam regarding hair typing. You did not use controversy or division to get your point across you just stated the facts. Thanks!
Great video! I discussed all 4 categories during INHMD 2014 here in Los Angeles. And you said the doggone thing about this discrimination discussion. Thanks for such a thorough and informative video. #sharing #naturalhair #hairtips #teamnatural #teamcurly #hairtyping #hairdensity #porosity #hairtexture
That was a great break down and OMG Flash back to COS101 its been 20 years since I went to school and its hard to explain to people why their hair wont do what my hair will do... OMG such a great refresh
Love your honesty and realness, Great Video. Why I love your videos is because after being natural for 8 years I feel that there is so much bad advice going around on TH-cam about hair from people that haven't studied hair. Keep up the good work.
So on point! I know this was made 3 years ago..but this education is still needed today. Can you do an updated version, in particular a series of natural hair care education videos?
this was great info yess hairs porosity is more important to me than the hair typing, i dont hair type my hair, thank you for sharing! loving the hair!!
As usual very good video. Lots of info presented in an orderly manner. It is apparent that you really love what you do. You said on another vid that you've reached 600! Congrats Narada. Keep going. Full steam ahead.
thank you for this, I did my big chop almost 2 months ago and I keep thinking I going to figure out my hair type and still have not. I was just like forget it my hair type is Liz hair!!
Great hair typing vid! I know people hate the subject, but when you are new to the concept of natural hair and growing out new hair after years of relaxer, sometimes you have no clue what your hair even looks like, let alone how to take care of it and what it can 9and cant) do....
Great video, but I wish there was more acknowledgement about the fact that this is fueled by marketing tactics and/or schemes to get folks to buy their products. It's just another way to get people to spend money and avoid losing their consumer base. Even more mainstream lines are coming out with "natural" products (some are really awful) simply to increase their bottom line. Being truly informed is the best answer, and I commend you for doing just that and helping others do the same.
Thank you sweetie for breaking it down for everyone!! You reminded me of Elle (denimpixie/questfortheperfectcurl) because she stresses all these points as well as how dew points in your area can affect your hair versus ingredients like humectants (ie glycerin). Can't wait to see more vids with you and Ms Henny!! Wish I lived in GA :(
I use hair typing to search for information on the internet because I only watch videos with folks who have my type of hair. I think that's the only thing that the hair typing system is good for.
If you have time, could you please suggest a a sealer for high porosity. i can honestly tell you this is the first time I am hearing of the porosity scale. I have never been able to get advise on how to keep my hair hydrated - I 've tried several products but my hair remains dry even after applying product so I resorted to carrying either a spray with water or leave-in-conditioner which I spray in my hair hourly.
Great information! I think I'm giving up talking about hair discrimination too. You can't change peoples opinions and we all have different views on EVERYTHING!!
very informative. I learned alot from this video. Ur so funny! I would like you to kind of expound more or the protein topic. How can we find out if we are protein sensitive, how can we tell how much protein is in a hair product, if we look at the ingredients list can we pick out the different names or types of protein in a product? Also what do you know about mineral hair softeners like New Options by Errol Crockett? Are they good or bad for natural hair? Is just a chemical process like keratin treatments? Please answer back, I will wait with bated breath!
Nicely done. I believe I have Fine to Medium "Natural Hair" Dream of much fuller thick hair!!, but you're right about the combinations bcus the Middle towards top lil thicker an tend to dry out the fastest. What's regimen or product would you recommend to get thicker and retain length?? Thanx ;)
First let me just say I think you did an excellent job. I definitely over the years have been fully aware of my low porosity, THICK density and coily hair! Keep doing you and yes the natural hair convo/divisiveness is getting rather old, but get ready by I did hear that Chris Rock is making a sequel to his documentary Good Hair called Natural Hair. lol let the hair shaming begin smh! As if it's ever really stopped. great vid btw again!
Do you think there can be a link between porosity and the others (ex moisture absorption, etc)? Or is each category distinct from the others? Just curious ...
TrueHealth27 No, all of these categories are distinct but this is just the tip of the iceburg. They all tie in and affect one another. For example, it is rare, but most people that have coarse (thick hair strands) typically do not hair thick (high density) hair, simply because the large size of the hair follicles take up too much space on the scalp. Like I discussed one of my older videos in this series, your follicle shape can determine your curl pattern and size of the follicle shape will determine your hair texture as well. There are so many factors that affect your hair and how it behaves but hopefully this video will help you find other youtubers that you can more closely compare your hair with besides just curl pattern.
pH definitely plays a big role in hair. I honestly have never went as far as testing the pH of my products. But understanding pH and how it works can help with retaining moisture, smoothing the surface of the hair, and keeping your hair healthy. In my next video in this series, I plan to discuss ph and how it affects your hair.
Heyy I am transitioning right now I was just wondering how do you take care of the two textures, because lately I have just been wearing braids as a protective style so I won't be tempted to flat iron my hair, but I am about ready to take these braids out so I need help taking care of my two textures. And I love your videos
Thank you for sharing some great information, it was very helpful to me! My questions to you- Is ph more important to different hair textures and porosity (eg: fine textured, high porosity naturals should always look for low ph products)? Is weather/seasons ever a consideration for using more/less protein on the hair (provided your not protein sensitive)? Thanks again and you have a new subbie!
I know this is an old video, I always thought I had low porosity hair but from the examples I seem to have high. I don't retain moisture but when doing the water test, my hair stayed on top. Now i know you said some ppl can have combination porosity I have been natural for five years this last year just taking the time to learn my hair. Is it possible that I have combination porosity while my hair is all natural? Sorry for the long rant. TIA
+Odette Black I figured that. I went and checked my description after I read your comment. it's a default template more than likely I was rushing to get this upload up and forgot to add the music details. The game was great. It had the potential to rival Smash bros. but the combat was too broken and the story mode just sucked lol
***** omgee so true lol. I was team Fei Rin all the way. It had a lot of potential but you're right, combat was super choppy! Playin with AI super sucked. It did have this sassy jazz feel to it and the characters were supper original even though it featured machina. I see you're into Fatal Frame have you tried Haunting Ground, or silent hill?
I have fine textured, medium density hair, I used to have a lot of trouble with breakage and heat damage but I've since managed to control that however , I do suffer with single strand knots and split ends that I'm constantly having to snip. are there any techniques that you would suggest to help combat these issues or is it unavoidable with fine textured hair?
I think for the most part ssk are unavoidable with kinky/curly hair, especially if you wear it out a lot. You can minimize them by keeping your hair stretched, ends moisturized/sealed, and trimmed more often. My daughter is a 4b with very fine hair, high density. If I allow her hair to be wet and ends dry unstretched, she will get knots that I have to cut.
I wish you could run your fingers all up & through my scalp (✿◠‿◠). I would love to have a natural hair consultation by you! 6 days until my one year BIG Chop Anniversary! I love your videos and thanks for all the information ❤️.
I have to say that 4C hair DOES have a curl pattern. 4C hair of course is coarse but does not in no way mean they don't have a curl pattern. Their hair is just extremely coiled and compact.
Betty Boop So then, which hair type doesn't have a definite curl pattern? Because I have seen it many times. Afro hair can't be divided into only 3 subgroups... it's way too diverse
Betty Boop And 4c hair doesn't have to be coarse (as in feel and in hair texture) I have seen 4c hair that is soft like cotton or thick full strands but still similar in curl pattern... or lack thereof lol
***** Yes, but 4C's do have a curl pattern. Verrrry difficult to see it when the hair is dry. When you soak down some 4C hair with some water or moisture.... BAM!... there is a whole lot of curls in those kinks.
***** BTW, I'm new to your channel and love you guys and your vlogs. :) Also, I'm a newbie transitioner (actually my second try at transitioning, last time was in 2007).
