From what I've seen so far Paul Phua doesnt seem to get out of line preflop very often. If that's the case the shove with AQ from Tom is obviously terrible. But they know eachother very well, so I guess Paul does sometimes 4bet hands like 99 or AJ in these spots too.

For those confused about the Dwan hand
What matters when considering a shove:
    Pot size
    Chips Risked
    fold %
    Equity when called
It takes about 3 minutes to guesstimate these values (For Dwan too as shown), and yes the AQ blockers matter for "fold %" category. It was close, but the shove ended up being profitable ( I can show math in full if you want ).
Also there is something called MDF. If Dwan folds here, he has a leak in his overall strategy. He has to call or raise to protect MDF.
I did the math on the Dwan shove if anyone is interested. Personally I was surprised in the results.
So he is betting 1b to win 479m. Phua gets 1b to win 1.679b odds or 1.67
to 1. This means he will fold his bluffs and call with value.
How often is he 4 bet bluffing? It is hard to say, but let's just give
him the unbalanced 3 combos of A5 suited only as worst case scenario for Dwan for
starters. Let's say this is his only bluff. Against a difficult range of
Tens+ AK we have an opponent with
    30 value 3 bluffs
    1/11 fold equity or %9.09
%9 of 479m is 43.1m. Dwan is credited for 43m in fold equity just for
    shoving.
When called pot will be 2.679b
    Against Ts+Js (6 combos) - Dwan gets 1.3b, a 300m profit
Against KK and AK and QQ (21 combos) Dwan gets about 670m in equity, a 330m loss
Against AA (3 combos) Dwan gets 134m in equity, a 876m loss.
So if Dwan shoves here 30 times, he will win on average 1.8b from Ts and
Js,, lose 6.9b to KK, AK, and QQ, and 2.6b to AA - Total losses 9.5b
Total wins,1.8b Difference is negative 7.7b per 30 shoves. Divide 7.7b
by 30 to get when called EV per shove.
EV When called - Negative 256m
Fold Equity per shove (3 combos of folds) - 43m
EV on Shove against a nit - Negative 213m
Now that we know Our EV when called, we just need to figure out how many
folds we need to break even, and re-evaluate until we have a range that
    works and is more realistic
Let's say we are against the 30 value combos and A2-A5 suited only as a
bluff. Can we win that way?
EV When called - Negative 256m
    folding combos 12
    Calling combos 21
Fold Equity per shove %36.36 on a pot of 479m (12 combos of folds) -
    174m
Overall shove value - Neg 82m
    Still losing here.
Our opponent has to be looser than this.
Let's give him 1 combo of 67 suited, all combos of 78 suited, all combos
of 89 suited as well for bluffs. This is super reasonable in general,
as well as for this player. So now he has (1)67, 4 combos 78, 4combos
    89ss, A2-A5ss, TT+ AK+ as his range
    21 folding combos
    21 calling combos
EV When called - Negative 256m
Fold Equity per shove - 239.5m
This range still loses a couple straddles - Neg 17m
Phua either has to have AQ sometimes as a call or a fold, and/or fold more than half his
hands for this shove to be profitable.

When Dwan is faced with the bet, he can consider shoving opposed to folding, but he has to run through this exact math first...
The pot is 479mStack is 1b
So he is betting 1b to win 479m. Phua gets 1b to win 1.679b odds or 1.67 to 1. This means he will fold his bluffs and call with value.

It depends. In this particular case - he shoved 1.09M ~ USD which translates to roughly 215 big blinds, which is WAAAY too many blinds to be getting in preflop with a hand like AQ.
So to answer your question, in this particular case it was a very bad decision by Tom Dwan. Even if Paul Phua was bluffing, it would still be a very bad play from a theoretical perspective.

Interesting hand. I don't think I've ever seen Tom Dwan tank - when was the last time that every happened??? Especially PF too - at his level, most PF decisions are automatic. A 3 minute tank over AQ? This is a new Durrrr

Dennis S think it’s fair to say tom’s game has regressed alot since his heyday of 2008-9. Playing in macau probably made him lose a lot of sharpness

I've got to say what on earth was Dwan thinking about all that time? He basically thought himself into calling when he could have just folded quickly. You won't see the Asians taking this long to make a relatively simple decision. Even his opponent said half way through 'what is so complicated'? I know it's a lot of money but it doesn't require this, these guys play stakes this high regularly. Just make a call or fold.

Dwan has to be broke by now. Unless he’s playing with someone else’s cash. Which is most likely, the amounts of cash here are outa this world. And they talk like it’s a $1-2 game. Unreal

Tom doesnt have it anymore. Where he needs to pull his old school trigger, he doesnt pull it off. Where he needs to fold for a 4-bet he punts the 1.3m stack in to the air. What a pain to watch it

    • @EricSmyth4Christ
      @EricSmyth4Christ 6 ปีที่แล้ว

I think he was concerned about the TV. He would rather shove light than fold and be wrong on the tight side. Obviously AQ is a good bluffing hand and is super easy to justify as a shove oop. Without cameras he might exo fold based on instinct. Tough spot.
