Full Metal Jousting - The Biggest Hits

- I started watching the show Full Metal Jousting from History Channel, and loved it so much I thought i'd put together some of the biggest hits in one little video. Enjoy!
*I don't own copyright on any of the footage, I'm just fan!*
Jousting needs to be brought back as a real sport again.
They should! Or at least do another season of Full Metal Jousting.
Yeah, but with more advanced armor for full protection, at least :P
Just join the SCA. Cooler and less stupid like this.
Na, has to period armour as that is designed to do the job - the moment i see nike on a piece of 'armour' that looks like an American Football play it's no longer jousting. Needs period lances, period tracks and period armour for it to be still lancing.
@@VaeVictisXIII Too dangerous to use period equipment.
For this to be a real sport they would need extremely padded armor and suits with back support. If people do this for too long they would suffer lethal injuries.
Imagine this as an Olympic sport.
be fricking awesome
we need that, wish this was a more popular and international sport
www.change.org/p/thomas-bach-make-jousting-olympic-sport
Hell yes!
I'd actually buy an Olympic ticket for this.
If these modern jousters were already sustaining such injuries using thin and flexible lances riding in a slow gallop, just imagine how it was in the Middle Ages when they'd make the lances as thick, heavy, and hard as possible and horses charging in full gallop!
+Chivalry “WraithOfChivalry” Wraith Pretty simple to imagine : people would die of horrible injuries ^^
+Chivalry Wraith
I do not know if you care, but our modern perception of the joust is a bit off based on movies. Inflicting wounds on a joust was regarded as foul play and sometimes had serious consequences for the inflicting side.
Injuries were only accepted as accidents and required a formal apology.
Lets keep in mind that most participants had extremely wealthy parents and even the equipment for a joust was worth about an average village. You can convert that price into your currency.
Imagine a bunch of 15 year old sons of billionaires under the supervision of some elders.
The reason for the lack of serious injuries were the saddles that prevented falling and the armor that prevented falling damage to neck and limbs by being only partially flexible. Very much unlike the equipment we can see in the video. Even occasional jousts with sharp lances rarely injured anyone based on the thickness of those 120lbs jousting armors, which had no weak points.
After King Henry II of France died after getting a wooden splinter into his eye, jousting was officially banned.
+Chivalry Wraith Actually, the lances they're using are pretty nasty. Later jousting tried to be a bit safer by being "fluted", which means holes were drilled in to make them shatter a bit easier. That led to more breakage of the lance but less unseating (which is, as you can see, the REALLY bad part; being hit by a lance is one thing but falling to the ground with your feet in stirrups is worse). And remember, that plate on the shoulder is the target, you aren't meant to hit anywhere else. Those lances can splinter, yet are still strong enough to take you off a horse by your SHOULDER, and not the one you're thrusting the lance with.
Of course, while the jousting here was an attempt to be as accurate as possible (there were changes made for safety, with the armor actually being a lot safer to fall off a horse in), what prevented a lot of injuries in jousting was training. These men are often, at best, period re-enacters and are otherwise simply skilled horse riders. None of them have been taught to actually kill things from horseback, least of all other men on horseback, much less actually combat joust. Your average tourney knight had likely been taught to do both since he was VERY young. They have better reflexes and know how to save themselves. And that, along with training at arms, was the majority of their lives. Even the coaches have nowhere near that kind of experience.
But yes, to your point, these are still tourney lances (if nasty ones) and are made to shatter. Lancing from horseback with an actual spear or lance did happen, and those were NOT meant to break. And those were delivered at full gallop, not at the shoulder with a blunt tip, but anywhere vulnerable with a heavy spear head. I can't even imagine what THAT would have been like. Unseating wouldn't have even been in the top five horrendous things that could happen there. It would take brass balls, nerves of steel, and the good sense of a rock to be a part of that.
But if you look at the Full Metal Jousting website they belittle the lances of the Middle Ages..they say it was thinner and merely like javelins, while the modern lance was thicker.. Everything you said in your comment is true, but I don't know why the ones who made the website think otherwise..
Your comment is really nice to read... There's something I want to mention if we want to imagine how it's like to be hit by the deadly thickness and heaviness of the medieval lance.. The thickest and heaviest that the medieval lance have been was I believe during the late medieval period... At the battle of Bosworth field King Richard III lanced the banner-bearer of Henry Tudor from a full gallop. He hit him accurately at the head, and fell off the horse. Later, people didn't find any penetration on the banner-bearer's helmet, nor was his neck broken. But such was the impact of the thick heavy lance that the banner-bearer was said to have died at the point of impact---even before he fell to the ground!
I was talking to Shane Adams today, he was telling me that the lances they use are actually heavier than the ones used back then because they didn't want to get hurt in "tournament" back in the old days.
I really wish they'd bring this show back. Honestly, I'm interested in joining, if I could. It looks absolutely awesome, but terrifying.
NodachiMaster959 they have a show in Las Vegas where they do this and they give you a full chicken and a huge beer while you watch.
The injuries in the first season drove the insurance costs too high. A broken lance missed one guy's femoral artery by millimetres, an injury which almost certainly would have been fatal.
@@SylviusTheMad I believe it.
Both this and Knight Fight lasted only one season for now.
@@BlazingSteel only for now hopefully
Not just terrifying but incredibly painful.
My wife and I just caught this on the History channel. We watched all episodes in a single week. Love this! A sport my wife enjoyed as much as me. Thought nothing would replace NFL for me but this could. I watched the recordings of this rather than World Cup even.
Fucking hell men were absolute warriors in these times, weren't they?
I wonder why this doesn’t catch on in the US. It’s got everything. Major spectator sport, badass armor styles, extreme energy pole snapping ground pounding violence, potential death, and easy rule tracking. This should be on par with other big sports.
I would pay so much money to attend this or watch this on TV. Someone call ESPN
Let’s start a petition to make this a Olympic sport
Bring oldshool jousting back. This was still pretty badass though.
the best show ive seen on the box in years
I kinda see why it got cancelled lol, it was only a matter of time before someone died.
then again, people die in the boxing ring and mma cage too.
@@runswithbears3517 not as often as they would have in this 😂
It got cancelled because a king died
@@ryanagar7498 @ well you want a patted room and play chess?
@@jedslather these guys are 10ply soft
You are right. Saddles had very high pommels and cantles. They kept the rider from pitching forward or tumbling backward. The rider could be unhorsed sideways, but it would be more difficult to do. To be honest, though, today's audience wants to see the knock downs.
Rival Knights from google play..
Why is your comment voted down? I admire your courage. If you can bear the pain, you can play the game. Just make sure you can meet the first part.
The saddles you're talking about were designed for war. This is sport and falling gives extra points so you have to manage to fall the least possible that's all the game.
And i'm not even talking about the power a war saddle may add to the shock, eventually leading to bad injuries for your brave opponent
Fucking Awesome!
Damn this looks fun
This is an awesome sport to watch. I hope you will have more uploads to watch. BTW I am subscribing to to your channel.
Whats if you are left handed?
Tis but a scratch!!!
Great way to spend your weekend...wouldn't be able to see much with helmet🤔
Finally, a real sport 🙂
Incredible~!!!
this looks like fun
If this would be a Legal Sport today, the rules will be set and simple:
1. Wear a well protected Armor.
2. Sharp Lances or lethal objects are prohibited, use blunt tipped Lances.
How to Win:
Those who participate this duel will have an independent count of rounds for two duelists only (3 or 6 Rounds). One Duelist who have the most points after all rounds wins the Duel.
epic
This is so cool but looks really painful
and some people still think you can cut through plate armour
These guys are tuff as fuck... now imagine doing this with no modern medicine or hospitals.
Jeez that's intense
Maccana lyman b's ssh a an snssusu n.a. Shannon
This should be a big sport
High risk but big sport
I love this. The Olympics are full of boring sports, let’s reintroduce this and see how real champions work.
Daaaamn.
Sick ouwe
Knight errant
I kinda want to do this.
nice ...
I can only hear "clink"
Man of steel
Thanks for everything! Here’s a little something for fun: th-cam.com/video/qDeVxNat4Hs/w-d-xo.html
Look at dat armor -_-
If fist fighting can be made into an official sport...this would be a success! Especially since the injury rate is higher...I'm surprised that last one didn't knock him out..I bet his ear are still ringing

Chill out dude. If you had watched the show, you might appreciate the level of safety that both the riders and the horses are protected by. No one is trying to kill anyone, they just want to compare their skills and bravery. As men do.
Proud to be an English man
1:13 the guy spits out his tooth
For the church!!!!!!!!;
If this was an Olympic Sport it would be a deadly but fun sport.💕💕 All contestants wil be dead.
The armor they used in this show is seriously stupid and dangerous design. The helmet for jousting should be mounted to the fucking chest piece in order to prevent the helmet from rotating the neck. I should expect nothing less from the history channel though.
huh
the creator says " how can I edit the videos to make the least amount of impact for the audience possible?" and succeeds. come on
Please pop the visor im gona throw up lol xD
So that's why we men have shorter lives? totally worth it.
too many jump cuts
Has anyone died doing this?
Well, back in like 1500s jousting was super popular but then it was banned after King Henry II jousted and his lance broke into a bunch of splinters and got in his eye and killed him.
Interesting. Thanks!
its a shame on competitor with 13years jousting owned with a gayesh noob
Americans....pfft
Football ain't got nothin' on this ;)
I ride rodeo, and I still think jousting is a tougher sport than bull riding.
Jordan Ede Ouch, I watched the bull riding competition in Texas a while ago with Bushwacker, there can be some heavy hits from the bull--- They're both tough sports, but yeah, in bull riding you might get out alright, but in jousting you must take the hit and take it precisely the best way.
MinockerSpanichle
bullriding looks like it hurts ur nutzzz
perfecttrunks2000 I wouldn't know. I have a vagina. I've had some areas chafed raw (OUCH), only when I lean forward too much or don't follow the motions.
MinockerSpanichle hey ffumf e 8d f7d yes I 52nd ndimdofkomf
Yeah let's just throw away the defensively proven armor designs from the 15th and 16th centuries in favor of shitty looking "modern" square shaped armor. Jousting armor was much heavier than regular field armor and was specifically designed to deflect lances by being polished and round. It didn't look anything like this shit, and that guy who got hit in the head is lucky he's alive. They often clamped the bottom of their helmets to their breastplates for this very reason so they could be more stable
Siegfried9 thank you
Believe me falling with full metal plate armour would seriously injure someone and is extremely heavy and tiring, the 15th and 16th centuries were a much more brutal time and as humans we have evolved far enough to realize that old jousting is extremely dangerous and can easily be fatal given the right strike, or even from the fall alone
Gcasper do you think this "newer" form of jousting is saver?
yup, the fall is a lot more safe and the lances aren't as dangerous along with a lot more other reasons but i don't really care enough to go into detail
Gcasper I don't understand how having a gap in the armour where your throat is can be more save than a frogmouth helm that is bolted to the breastplate
Seeing this, I can't imagine what a Medieval period big hit would have looked like!
Probably a lance through the poor bastard
I believe they called it "funeral"
Not pretty
A messy pile of spaghetti on a silver platter comes to mind.
Probably exactly like this, the lances are designed to break
Every time knights collided like this, a samurai peed his pants.
Lol … considering a knight would have peed their pants meeting up with Samurai... and attempted to run away.
@@museluvr Not really. European steel was superior to Japanese steel.
@@museluvr Dumbass..
Bleed The Machines still are
@@museluvr you know of a samurai ever were to try and strike a metal plate like that they're sword would probably break they weren't made to hit such hard targets
That's dangerous... better play Rival Knights.
you just remind me I have some seals I need to request for.......lol
Souf Kerrlina XD
Rival knights brought me here
***** I quit Rival Knight cause... out of money
CaptainGameGuru me too that game is awesome
Too bad it got cancelled I'd watch this... I always hear about the good shows after they get cancelled.
real fucking sport for men tough as nails!
I LOVED that show ... and wish they'd bring it back. The adrenalin rush of watching the charge, the shattered lances, the un-horsings .. it was all great sport, unmatched by anything. This could be as big as the PBR, imho. Bring it on! Charge on!
I made sure that stopped whatever homework I was doing and watched this. And if I missed it, I would find the episode on the web and catch up. It was a good show! Anyone know if the full episodes are still out there?
My six year old son just said "you when people ride horses towards each other and hit each other with the sticks? I want to do that"
And i dont think ive ever been more proud.
how to win this sport? Both fell down...so who is the winner?
Just saw some of this live today. Wow, it's far more violent then it appears. The impacts are nasty. Saw Jaclyn Ziemniak take a hard hit that dismounted her.
0:50 *bro looking like he's about to die*
ref: yep, you got a booboo up there
If bull riding is legal, than yhis definitely should be to
The armor should have sheep wool inside😂
"please pop the visor I'm gonna throw up" -squire watches in dismay as his knight's vomit sprays.
Honestly this event looks really bad
I remember when this first came out. Such a shame, in my opinion, that they elected to go with the "reality show" format. I think they would have had more commercial success if they went for a more "sports broadcast" style to the jousting. Regular tournaments with fans, commentators, scoreboards, etc. Put the focus on the sport itself instead of all the behind the scenes drama with between the jousters.
This is not what my Pokémon battle looks like in real life. If I could remember over a min that be a miracle for me to win an AE86
As a 15 year old man, I'd do anything to have your hand in legit marriage.
I feel like the string on the side makes this more dangerous than it needs to be.
"History Channel"?!
This is Hollywood "medieval"!
this has gotta top imcf, storica and M1.... dont get me wrong they rock too but - no defence option here apart from "stay put and suck it up......" when you have about 2 tons impacting at around 40 to 80 kmph or more hitting a 3-5 square cm area
Jousting is too dangerous to make it a real sport. Imagine getting these hits and falls for years... the human body cant handle too much of this. Broken backs and brain damage would be very common injuries in this sport.
What armour is this? From Mortal Kombat?
I WISH THEY'D BRING BACK THIS SERIES AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!
What’s it called
FULL METAL JOUSTING.
It is strange that in this case a nation that did not even exist in the Middle Ages is so interested in the "sports" of the old continent.
Idk why but I imagine the horses Being very confused that their rider keeps falling off.
Mmm looks like it doesnt match with reality, i cant imagine people doing that in middle ages, with no health care
Was the fucking producer having an epileptic fit when he was editing this!!!!!!!!!
i rather box for 12 rounds or play american football and risk getting a concussion than doing this lol
What a heart ,full respect.⚡
The double-unhorsing on the first day of the Indiana Renaissance Faire was pretty epic.
I wonder how those horses can carry the weight of their massive balls
Women have done competitive jousting in the past, and have done fairly well in those world championships they mentioned on the show.
well this makes me never want to try this ever... lol
"Come About!" "Lay On!" Those words got the crowds cheering back in the day. I can see why medieval jousting was such a popular sport, even if there weren't actually so many unhorsings as shown here. Takes guts.
it takes balls to do this
Holy fuck
O:51 oh yesss.... Amazing pain
World disputes should be settled like this
the best to see this is that horses dont get hurt
600lbs moving at 30mph and focused on one single point on a target is more than enough to fuck someone up. That armor is less than an inch thick even if it is made of steel.
