I’ve come to realise more and more that Bobby W, along with EC was the musical heart of that seminal album. So much energy and confidence…vox as well as instruments. Duane’s guitarwork is beautiful and lifts the sound that’s already been established by the four-piece.

Michael Rudnick agree. Imagine adding Dave Mason and Duane Allman to your band. I’m sure winwood sat in as well.

And then we walked in the door and I love the idea of a unreal record and. The power of the band is playing with everything about that first broken 💔😢😥 heart and every song feels like wow I didn't realize that Eric Clapton feels like me and then you grab your guitar and amp 😂 and then play it by ear and then the next song feels like it's all how u. Feel your love for her will never go away and then anyway comes on and tears running down my face and then 😭💔 sing 😭 anayday and the power of Bobby's voice is so like Eric you know you have a lot of power and that record is what heals my torn up and broken heat 😷 and made me play and be the. Guitar and songwriter singer IAM I trueley think about that record it is the best memories and insperation of all time never forget you no this record is the best ever done

+Marty C : Yes, I agree with you. But I also saw....totally my opinion here only.....that she was almost sitting with her arm around him to kind of keep him focused maybe.....keeping him from going off and speaking inappropriately (which he gave no indication of) or going "off the rails" in a sense. She def. whispered something at him very quickly towards the end of his telling his tale, I don't know what it was. Maybe to "cut it short". Hey.....I could be totally wrong, but watch her eyes......she's scrutinizing every word he's saying and I think I'm not wrong here. Personally, I thoroughly enjoyed his tale and could have listened to him for much longer. Who knows.

I loved John Mayall and Cream, but just lately getting into the whole Delaney and Bonnie and Derek and the Dominos period. Of course I loved Layla but all the stuff that gang put out was terrific, and more easy going than Cream. Having Duane Allman join in was a real inspiration but even without Duane those groups were great.

I saw the AllmanBrothers at the Syria Mosque in Pittsburgh , Pa. on October 15 , 1971. Unbelievable nite. Duane played half the nite on the S.G. and half on the L.P. Dicky played a Gold Top. I think they both had 50 watt Marshalls. I think it was on "You don't love me" .Duane takes a solo by himself on the burst and gos a little out of tune , hits a 5th frett barred A, tunes the G string up and dives right back into it . No stopping him . He left us days latter. That concert is online or U-Tube .

I was fortunate enough to see the ABB play a Sunday afternoon gig at a small park in Macon Ga. Must have been 1970/71.I was 12 or 13 y/o at the time. I was standing maybe 10-15 feet from Duane, ....to say he was a stunning guitarist is an understatement, at certain points he was just scary great! The thing i remember most though while watching/listening to him was that it seemed to me that his guitar sounded like it was breathing in between notes, like it was alive. (I wasn't doing drink or drugs by the way) Not normal gtr amp hiss or effects or anything, Very strange in a good way and VERY cool! I've never since heard any guitarist sound the way he made that guitar sound that day and i probably never will.

Back in late ’69 I was visiting my cousin who was a DJ at a radio station in Chicago. We were at his house getting ready to go out for the evening when he suggested we listen to a promo album the station just got. It was the Allman Brothers’ first album. We listened to the whole thing and were of course blown away. After, we went to a club on State Street in Chicago called “Beavers” which was a favorite of ours. If any of you were around at that time and frequented Beavers you may recall that when you entered the club you walked through a long corridor before entering the main room during which you could hear whoever was on stage. What we heard sounded familiar and once inside we saw it was the Brothers. The stage wasn’t really big enough to hold the whole group so they were tightly packed but still a couple of guys had to spill over onto the floor. They were phenomenal! Before that I was lucky enough to see John Mayall with Clapton as the Bluesbreakers at a small teen club in a Chicago suburb called the Cellar in, I want to say 1965 and then in ’66 or ’67 saw Cream there, so I got to see two of the greatest guitarists of my generation (actually three as I saw Hendrix in Chicago as well).
Interesting note about the Cellar: my wife and I met there in ’64 at a Who show (during their first American tour). At the time I think admission was like $2.00 or $2.50. Many years later we saw them again but the tickets were $250! If any film makers are reading this…someone has to do a documentary about the Cellar. For those who don’t know, all the local bands played there as well as tons of international Rock acts (the above plus The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, The Spencer Davis Group, Three Dog Night, The Steve Miller Band, and a whole lot more). Man, the ‘60s were great!

Here is Greg Allmans side of it, excerpt from Greg's book entitled...'My Cross to Bear'.
On August 26, 1970, we were down in Miami Beach, playing a free gig on a stage that the city set up on a big median on Collins Avenue. We were playing "Don't Keep Me Wondering'", which was next-to-last song of the night. It would segue with a little jam into "Whipping Post," and i looked out over the crowd, and the people were all standing on the grass, listening. Nobody was doing the Grateful Dead waltz, and there weren't no spinners.
I looked over, and i saw this set of beautiful burnt sienna suede boots on this cat who was sitting on the grass with one leg out in front of him. I followed that boot up the pants, up the body to the head, and there was Mr. Eric Clapton. Next to him was Tommy Dowd, grinning like a fucking mule eating in the briars. Jim Gordon, Carl Radle, and Bobby Whitlock were there too--all of the Dominoes, but i didn't recognize them.
After i shit myself, i looked over to Duane, thinking, "I hope to Christ he doesn't see him, because this will either be the finest 'Whipping Post' we'll ever play, or this fucker's going to fall apart." But Duane didn't notice anything, so we finished the show with a real good "Whipping Post," and then Duane eases over to me and said, "Baybrah, dig who the fuck is sitting over there." "Man i saw him two songs ago," I said. "Do you see them fucking boots, man"? Duane had a real thing for clothes back then---we both did.
I'd advise reading this book, it's one of those that's hard to put down once You get going!!! *P.s. At 1:40 Use some common practical logic here--Do You honestly think that being the professional musicians Duane and Dickey already were at the time, that they would stop playing just because they seen...GOD? I mean Eric Clapton---hahahaha. **Whitlock is acting like a... DOMINOGOODNIK!!! hahaha

He could play parts, but he couldn’t sing with his guitar." Duane " was not a fluid player"? yet Clap asked Duane to join his band? LAYLA would NOT be the masterpiece it is without Duane's opening riff which Butch said Duane did indeed compose, Butch was there. Duane's INCREDIBLE slide throughout LAYLA and Duane's birdy chirps on slide which end the song. Duane was named 2nd greatest guitarits after Hendrix for decades until this new crop of "experts" dropped Duane down to #10, REALLY?

Then, apparently Gordon met with D & the D's manager Robert Stigwood and struck a deal whereby the coda would be tagged onto the original track. Much to the chagrin of the rest of the band, they had to fly back to Florida to record that coda. Gordon had laid down the original piano but it was considered weak, so Bobby played over it, resulting in the dynamic rendering we all love so much.
By all accounts, Gordon was an erratic individual, and this incident was one of several that ultimately led to the band dissolving, with the final straw apparently being him taking receipt of a large new drum kit and assembling that during a session when the band was to have been recording. It seems that Gordon, who was one of America's top session players prior to joining the band (he was enlisted after Jim Keltner was unable to accept the invitation due to a scheduling conflict), saw himself as being above the rest.
Possibly you are also aware that the piano coda originated with Gordon's previous girlfriend, singer Rita Coolidge (that relationship ended when he punched her in the face during the Mad Dogs & Englismen tour). According to Ms. Coolidge (and supported by Stephen Stills and Graham Nash), the music Gordon used and took credit for came from her tune 'Time', which was recorded by Booker T Jones (of MGs fame) and Coolidge's sister (and Jones's wife) Priscilla. th-cam.com/video/9IJPLcwHOes/w-d-xo.html

Watch Tom Dowd the Language of Music as that is the best discussion of what happened by Tom Dowd who was there. There was a stage and security up front at the concert, that is where Tom and Eric took a seat. Bobby has changed his story over the years and now tries to minimize Brother Duane's contributions to what was an album stuck that needed energy and direction. Without Duane there would be no Layla.

I don't think Derek and the Dominos were considered a "super group," especially originally before Duane. If anything, they were EC's attempt at an anti-super group, including not having his name on top of the band. It's also kind of funny that this piece ends with the piano coda to "Layla," which Whitlock despised because he thought Jim Gordon stole it from Rita C.

The title track and the album would never be eternal without Duane Allman ("all man" and more . The drummer Jim Gordon was played the piano for the interlude between part 1 and part 2 of the song . Whether or not Gordon came up with the idea of the beautiful second part i don't know . Gordon was classically trained as a percussionist and could read music probably better than anyone in Derek and the Dominos . He was a workaholic . many times: morning he'd be a session in studio recordings including steely dan, in the afternoon playing a gig and at night playing percussionist with a symphony ( a modern day percussionist or timpanist does a hell of a lot more than bang on the big kettle drum . for example he or she also has to know how to play vibraphone like marimba which has wood slats . tubular bells each for a certain note or chord etc . that over work caused him to become violent and he lost his mind.
On June 3, 1983, he attacked his 72-year-old mother, Osa Marie Gordon, with a hammer before fatally stabbing her with a butcher knife; he claimed that a voice told him to kill her.[7][10][11]
He has been in a prison for violently insane ever since .... tragic story . the fucking anti psychotic drugs they have been forcing into him ever since have inhumane torture like side effects have probably made him worse .
At a 2005 hearing, he claimed his mother was still alive . He's up for parole in 2018.
Of course i don't find mental illness as an excuse for murder or homicide . Fact is the majority of crazy people don't commit violence and its not because there on the evil medication . I'm 60 now and i use to be a urban person for many years . these crazy loons on the street corners babbling nonsense , thinking they are the king of spain , gesticulating wildly at the sky etc i have never found to be violent . it's best to leave them alone . i had many a conversation with a crazy guy or woman after he got tired of ranting at a mcdonald's or coffee shop and found them quite interesting . But Jim Gordon was the rare dangerous "mentally ill" person . I'm the kind of person who can't help but have some pity for a single murder prisoner . those i have no pity for are like the corporate driven US government and military who kill millions directly or by proxy so the elites can plunder third world countries' resources

Allmans were the likely the best American rock band with every element clicking--vocals, guitars, songwriting, and incomparably interpretations of the blues. The Doors made every blues song they touched the best version (Who Do You Love, Little Red Rooster, Crawling King Snake, Back Door Man, etc.) Amazingly underrated no-frills band with the best vocalist in rock. The Band had three virtuosic singers (!), perfect musicians, and excellent, unique songwriting and composition. Springsteen's band in the 70s could not be topped--doubters only need see the Hammersmith Odeon in London concert in '75. That there are the greatest four American rock bands, though it pains me to leave Hendrix out of any sentence with the word "greatest," as he was on an entirely different level as everyone else.
