  • Yesterday I made a video on this Troy-Bilt XP lawn mower asking for some advice on what to look for. After reading over the suggestions, I have determined the issue. I also give a closer look at how the system works.
Thanks for all the suggestions. Thanks for watching. If you haven't already, subscribe, leave a comment and hit the thumbs up.
See you on the next one.

I just got one of this mowers what did you end up doing with yours??? The cable on mine is hard to pull and will not spring back so no self propelled also the carburetor is super dirty I am thinking of replacing it with an aftermarket carburetor. Thank you for the video.

Removed all self propelled components and sold it like I mentioned in the video. Good push mower. Carbs are easy enough to clean, try that first.

The SOB weighs 60 lbs before you start to push it!

@@ronz101 The guy who bought it had no issue pushing it. 30 pounds was probably removed between the trans wheel gears, belt, pulley, cables and that entire control assembly on the deck. Once all that was stripped it was about the same as there push mowers with a slightly stronger deck.
Here’s the one I had and was my favorite. The ‘91 Craftsman 3.5 Eager 1. 32 years old at time of filming. If I didn’t get the 150 I would have kept it. I’ll get another one some day.

your belt is worn out, you can see chunks in the assembly at 8:37

The belt was fine, the transmission was bad. It's a common problem on these. Even if the belt was worn, when you hold in the lever above the trans and turn the pulley, it should be turning the axle. It didn't. The gears were worn out. It was an over-complicated poor design and the company scrapped it.

I had one very similar on a Poulan Pro. I ended up making it a push mower because it wasn't worth buying new parts for it. I ended up selling it for an even $100 about a year ago.

I have one with the big briggs i am digging into tomorrow. It only has low speed. It hade no hub when I received it. Pretty sure the wave washer is missing preventing it holding the speeds against the round plastic cover. We shall see.

Thanks for the video. Even though you didn't completely disassemble it, I was able to see how the drive cable connected to the plastic piece that "shifted gears". I was stumped, couldn't figure it out. My only problem was that the spring on the end of the cable had come unhooked, I closed the spring end over the plastic piece so it wouldn't do that again. I had been using this mower at one speed for several years, but recently the drive control cable broke, so I had to take it apart to install the new one. This self propelled system is unbelievably complicated, and your video is the only one I could find, showing even a partial disassembly underneath the deck. THANKS!

Glad it was somewhat helpful. Not much info on YT about this machine, older design wasn't made too long.

@ronz101 People keep commenting that was a heavy mower after removing around 30 pounds of parts off the thing from the handlebars down, every part. Not one piece of the self propel was left on that thing. After that it was about the same weight as an older well made Craftsman (AYP) push mower. It wasn’t heavy after that. It became a bare bones push mower with a slightly better made deck, that’s it. Same thing with any other self propelled model, what makes them heavier is all the components added for self propulsion. Remove every piece of those components, like I did on this one, your back to a push mower and push mowers are easier to use in all honesty. They’re lighter out the gate. They’re easier to push around not running, lift and mow with. People keep going under the assumption the thing still had all those components on it when it turned into and was sold as a push mower. It didn’t, every part was removed. The handlebars were bare, it had a bale and safety cable. The transmission, belt, gears and shifting components were all gone, all those plastic parts were gone, the pulley on the engine shaft was gone, it was a plain deck with and engine, blade adapter and blade and 4 wheels that had ball bearings to roll smoother and a bag. It wasn’t heavy. If all those components were left it would have been heavy, nothing for the self propelled stayed on there. You jumped a couple categories on your way to rider. Like the wide cut walk behinds. This machine went a step back down. Push mower, it wasn’t heavy. I know I said it in the video, every component was getting removed and it was and it sold the next day and the guy who bought it didn’t think it was heavy either. I’m sure it’s still in use now, over 2 years later and it wasn’t any harder to use than any other solid push mower.

@ronz101 You already made a comment a month ago about this and now your back again making the exact same comment, you need to find something to do. Keep it up and I’m tossing your ass outta here and you’re not coming back.

@ronz101 BTW, your comment never made it on, it was automatically held for review. Your getting really close to getting tossed when I have to go in and check on held comments and there the same comment repeated over again. You’re wasting my time and you definitely need to find something to do. This comment is getting turned down. Don’t make me spend my time on this. It happens again you’re out.
