  • In this video I work with two honeysuckle trees that I have been pondering over for a while, and I update on a root over rock project from last year.

    The unforgettable vet-tape technique 😂 love it. It’s not a wet-tape, if not well watered. Incredible honeysuckle, indeed. 😍 Cheers 🙋‍♀️

    Looks like that little knee came in handy. You are right, the other one was just too cool to cut off all those roots for a rock. Great video, great project.

      They're all looking good so far, except for the Japanese maple clump, but to be fair that was always a bit of a stretch.

    I like a man with a plan. Lonicera honeysuckle are a pruning enthusiast heaven but they do need a bit of care mate, glad you left the whole tree just keep cutting it back to create ramification you can make a reasonable tree from it all branches, it’s all right creating it but it needs some care mate😅. Nothing like getting the muck on your hands. Good luck with your root over rock.

    • @TonysBonsai
      @TonysBonsai  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm actually looking forward to doing some pruning Joe. With most of my trees in primary development, I don't really need to do too much, so it will be nice in the future to have some trees to practice on.

      Now that sounds like a plan to me!

  • @JaniLaaksonen91
    @JaniLaaksonen91 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The last one that went on the rock is a nobrainer, that's how it was supposed to be done. The one on the white pot I'm slightly hesitating on. I do see loads of potential on that too, but I have to wait and see those shoots to mature and the trunk to be chopped off. If I could style it, I'd only leave one of those shoots, the 3rd from the bottom, highest of the suckers. And I would've bent it exactly like you bent that lowest sucker, into kind of gnarly bends to complement that bottom lump. Anyways now I'm more eager to see the end result of the way you did it. And more importantly you gave me inspiration and ideas what I want to do with my trees. Thanks again for your awesome videos!

    • @TonysBonsai
      @TonysBonsai  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you Jani. I have an idea in mind for that first tree, but it is by no means set in stone, and I may well end up doing what you suggest and taking it right back to a single twisting trunk, At least now it has some potential for the future.

    • @JaniLaaksonen91
      @JaniLaaksonen91 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TonysBonsai Absolutely a valid point. If you leave the final decision for later, you want to leave all plausable options open!

  • @Jacob-yb6bv
    @Jacob-yb6bv ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I’d have whipped the top off that. They are so fast to grow all its energy would be put into the bottom branches and new back buds.

    • @TonysBonsai
      @TonysBonsai  ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah it was tempting, but I always tend to leave them with some decent foliage. I just find they recover quicker and then when I do make the chop it will heal quicker.

    Now’s the time to realise something I’ve had to remind myself about many, many times - never assume rain has watered your trees. Never assume your trees are watered.
    I recently repotted a honeysuckle which I’d been training for 3 years, managed to get it into a small and suitable bonsai pot and waited for the buds to burst, they began to burst and I watched as they slowed down and basically stopped. I’d let the tree with it’s now somewhat diminished root system dry out! Despite the rain and a bit of watering around my garden - I’d made a fatal assumption that it was damp. Gutted.

    • @TonysBonsai
      @TonysBonsai  ปีที่แล้ว

      You're not wrong there Jake. It can be a killer when we assume that a bit of light spitting is properly watering our trees.

  • @Darkfire1300
    @Darkfire1300 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Part of that old bonsai thrill is the plant that you kill! Don't you just hate it when it's your fault? Would hate to have to admit how many trees I have ignored to their peril. Great job on the other trees...as usual, creative and a bit maverick!

    • @TonysBonsai
      @TonysBonsai  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes indeed. Some just die, and some I have killed, but we live and learn as they say!

    Another cool video! Do you eventually peel back the moss and clay mixture, to reveal the roots?

    • @TonysBonsai
      @TonysBonsai  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The plan is that eventually I will allow water to wash away the muck to reveal the roots, but not for another couple of years yet

  • @l3afl1p
    @l3afl1p ปีที่แล้ว +1

    1. Does that clay actually allow the roots to grow? 2. Do you grow your own moss? That looks crazy how thick that moss is.

    • @TonysBonsai
      @TonysBonsai  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Johan. Yes the much is only around 20% clay and 40% moss and 40% coco coir so it's a lot less solid than it looks, and the roots do seem to grow pretty well in it.
      The moss is some stuff I collected in the spring when out on a walk. It's really lovely thick stuff, but I'm pretty much out now so I'll have to get on the hunt again.

    How about cutting it a bit higher , including the next 2-3 branches.

    • @TonysBonsai
      @TonysBonsai  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that is still an option, but I think it's only got a slim chance as I just don;t like the straightness of the trunk
