Prisons are filling up because of the foolish drug laws. Prisons are big business in the U.S. with privatization and lobbyist. Drug laws create jobs, prisons, guards, probation officers, court personal, police, ect. And the good citizens love seeing people in prison. We have more people in prison than Russia and China combined but we love to say how oppressed Russia and the Chinese people are. Also, compare the U.S. and Russia / Chinese population. Alchol is legal and worshiped but drugs put you behind bars. Drunks kill tens of thousands every in car wrecks but drugs put you behind bars. Could go on but of is a waste of time.

That place was shut down because it really served no purpose. My brother was in this and it's really a minimum of the minimum of "prisons" in Texas. It was so damn old that there was no point in keeping it running. Plus, it's right in the middle of a fairly high populated area in Sugarland. Most TX prisons are out in the boonies.

Really? The "highly populated area" is populated by the 4 other prisons around it. Ramsey 1, 2, 3, and Darrington. All in Brazoria county, Texas.

Jackie, you are correct! They shut down Central Unit because there have been several high dollar neighborhoods built all around it. People with money in Sugar Land wanted it closed. The population has exploded there and Central was out dated and help less than 1000 convicts. They shut it down and sold the property to developers.

Credit for getting this one right, but clearly this kind of thinking is not the norm in Texas.

Treating people's additions instead of sending them to people who sell those addictions. What a radical idea! But really, USA you are falling behind.

So I got my first felony ( transporting drugs ) 15 YEARS while I was in jail he DA offers me 40 years I kinda freak out and attempt to escape , I did not even get off the jail property , so after my lawyer going back n forth with the DA I accepted a 15 year sentence for possession with intent to distribute, the escape charge was drop as part of my plea deal , but once I arrived at TDC the clarification department decided to convict me on an escape charge that was dropped and put me in a super max unit in medium custody in a cell 18/20 hr a day with inmates who would give Freddy Krueger nightmares , killers rapist murders pedophiles men with multiple life sentences, but at least I was willing to fight and after a few fights I was left alone , but I missed my first parole because of that escape charge I wasent convicted of , then when I did get parole my mother passed away 2 months from my realise date , but I wasent allowed to go to her funeral because of that escape charge that I wasent convicted of , so can someone tell me how a institution who is supposed to house reform and rehabilitate offenders have the power to become judge and jury on charges that were dropped by the state , that has ways made me wonder , ,well I have been on parole sense 2009 I will be released next July I haven't burned a piss test I haven't committed another crime and I have done all the parole board asked , and no it wasent Texas parole I had mine moved to New Mexico, my parole officers actually helped me become a good citizen with help of regaining my CDL help with collage help with mental issues because I became disabled and could not work so I wanted to die , but my parole officer with grace , understanding helped me though those tough and bad times not once did I feel I was constantly under there thumb or threttend with being sent back to prison , while I was in that super max I herd countless stories about the Texas parole board and how bad it was how the officers seemed to make it a priority to send people back how the parole board would not help a man get on with his life instead make it almost impossible for a man to become a good citizen again , but I have made it through to the other side and without any dam help from TCD or Texas parole board , maybe Texas should take note on new Mexico's parole program and actually try to help offenders

Well, some good points and not so,so good points. Central unit was closed because as one other person replied. Central Unit, is/was very old, and deteriorating. And in very bad need for some major upgrades. To keep up with the changing TDJC-ID policies, et Ruiz v State of Texas. A second thing was that private prisons were starting to pop up all over the country. A private company could provide and maintain an inmate cheaper than the state prison system could. So, TDCJ-ID started shipping people to private prisons and state jails. This video is a good propaganda piece. But not the real reason they did what they did.
