Great video and great insights. I bought F4 at launch and played through the game once, then put it down until last year when I ran across The Schooled Zone where this youtuber builds mod free cities within F4 and I was hooked. So the show gets announced and I do a few more runs ramping up to Hardcore and Hardcore is pretty ass almost immediately due to the way the game allows you to fly around and prep for any scenario like apocalyptic batman. So now I'm doing my first survival run and survival mode plus the building mechanic makes F4 my favorite Fallout (if you're NV weird, please, please, please do not take my loving F4 as a personal slight and if you do, I don't give a f....) So Fallout NV disclaimer out of the way... here's how my run is going and why everything you've laid out in the video is brilliant and accurate. Because I cannot fast travel, I wonder back to Sanctuary with the Minute Men and learn a bit about each of them as I'm walking. I actually bother talking to the dishrag Jun Long and the nameless one (Marcy) and realize that not only is Marcy Long not a bitch, she's a bad ass. So in normal mode I usually assign her to a guard post way at the edge of town so I never have to see her but in this run, I'm paying attention and she mentions her son being killed by raiders, so you understand she's grieving and doesn't have time for your shit. So all of the Marcy hate went right out of the window. I end up assigning her to an actual choke point and giving her the mini gun and now she talks about murdering raiders. So fast forward a bit through the learning curve and here's the real reason why survival turns a good game, great. Preston wants to take the castle so we agree to link up at the diner and game plan. I decide to hit up my boy Arturo for ammo and a fresh core but as soon as I'm in the city, I see Preston, who left real time hours ago, is crouched near a car wearing the generic Minute Men gear! Wtf.. so I see what's up and the game won't say it, but he definitely got robbed. Gun, hat, and clothes lol. So he's hiding and I hear gun fire so I role around the corner and so gunners are shooting at Preston while also fighting the children of the Atom! Wtf So I take out the more annoying of the group, then kill the gunners and loot the elite who dropped the Pipe rifle version of the Overseer's Guardian, which has hard carried me to Gun Nut rank 4 for the actual Overseers Guardian silenced. Now if I just fast traveled to the Castle, I would have missed this legendary encounter and wildy embarrassing moment for Preston Garvey. I would have missed killing a few crack heads guarding some dirty water and a crabs infested mattress for the save point to save my new gun. Would have missed the two random death claws getting nuked by a suicide Super Mutant. This game is absolutely crazy and nothing this wild has happened while playing F3 or The desert walking sim Fallout NV. My only regret is not firing up the Nvidia software to record it all.
I’m glad survival mode finally gave you a reason to appreciate FO4! This game get a lot of hate for not being NV but there’s a lot to appreciate about 4 that you can’t get in any other Fall out, but unfortunately most of those things are locked behind survival mode (which can be understandably intimidating for newer players). Moments like you had on the way to the caste are the core of what makes survival so good. The more time actually spent on the ground and not teleporting increases the amount of things one can see in a single play through. This along alongside everything in the game having more defined purpose makes Fallout 4 feel more complete as a game.
The title caught my eye and then I realized oh shit you been tellin me about this for weeks! XD
