Really appreciate the effort you took to make this test meaningful, great model, location, shooting on the two cams. That's a ton of work and effort that it took to film and edit this and the footage from both cameras look amazing.
For me, as a long time Canon user and also current FX6 owner, I have no horse in the game, I have both brands, but my C200s and C300 MKII are much older tech than the C400, but my observations are here that the Sony footage looks more "filmic" a bit softer and more cinematic in a good way. The 6K C400 to me, here, looks overly detailed and more digital video looking. Not bad but I prefer less sharpness and detail.
The skin tones on the FX6 aren't bad with your grade but overall, I still find the Canon colors more pleasing, particularly her skin tones and the golden hour backlight. I bought my FX6 in July and it was a great business decision, it's much more in demand in my market, but if I was buying today and my client base wasn't so Sony on the brain, I'd buy the C400 in a heartbeat, it's shaping up to be a real winner for Canon. But in the world of freelancing, good luck on breaking the Sony single minded obsession and I freelance for quite a bit of my income.
I think anyone would say that both cameras look amazing and that you and your team did some great work here. Thank you for posting this, excellent work.

@@danbrockettDOP thank you for that kind insight. I’ve noticed the market or clients that know cameras prefer the Sony over the canon. Both have unique looks to them it boils down to preference. I too like a softer look like you say.

Your C400 reviews have been really helpful and informative!!! I have been shooting docs for almost 15 years and i got my EOS R6 when i made my third Doc in 2021. Still used it on my last Doc which i just finished, it's been a workhorse for me, and i have been a Canon guy my whole life. I am gearing up for a huge shoot in Australia and it time to upgrade. Thanks to you I made my decision and i am going to be picking up C400 plus the full rig out, as my A cam, and a C80 for my B Cam, with the full rig and for quick running and gunning. I love canon, I love the color, i can always tell a Canon from a Sony. Thanks for the comparison video. There was a short period when i considered the FX9 / Fx3 combo (after the Creator came out) but with the C400 /C80 i will be all set for a long time to come. I tend to stick with gear until it breaks or becomes to obsolete. Thanks again for an informative video.

@@eliovisita I hear you. When I first got my R6 Rig in 2021 I had heard about the overheating. So I got the Atomos Ninja V - while expensive, it solves the overheating problem completely and gives me a high quality Pro-Res. 422 image - also with those big 500G SSds I can shoot all day. I rigged y Cannon RP the same way. It's also nice to have that larger monitor. Another trick is to keep the screen open when shooting video, it definitely helps cool the camera. I hope that helps.

Been using my FX6 for a lot of different situations and this is one of the best options ever made. It supports now the Blackmagic RAW.
Tbh, this kind of comparison nowadays is an arms race with no clear winner, because at the end of the day, it’s all about your creativity and skills to use tools properly to get the result.

All the footage is amazing. When the C400 reel showed came up I immediately thought the Canon was much more pleasing and technically better, but after watching the entire video, overall maybe FX6 due “softness” and cinematic feel? This is all so highly subjective. I prefer clean and downgrade in post rather than cinematic and try to get it sharper in post - which to me would be much harder. Overall all though, they’re both amazing. The operator and post is more important. I think we’re finally at a stage where the prowess of the operator, DP or what have you is more important, all else equal. The equipment is not the limiting factor [vs the competition].
Furthermore, maybe the feature set of the equipment and overall package is more important in these times now? In the is case the C400 by a country mile? Either way, great times and competition is good!

@@heikogehrig thanks for the insight. I’ve noticed a shift in what people prefer in terms of visuals. Sharper and crisp being more the preference. That could be iPhones fault. You make some interesting and valid points. I think in a few years what we closed to consider cinematic will be entirely different. The story and person behind the camera are definitely the biggest factor. I’m just really happy to have autofocus on a camera like this honestly.

    • @MediaMindscape

Great work and very interesting to see that they both look so good. If I saw them separately I couldn't tell. I didn't get the impression that C400 would be sharper (I looked at it on Eizo 4k screen). Maybe Canon has a tad sort of softer rendering of the high lights and skin tone... maybe its the grading. Hard to say. I would be happy with either camera. But heavy to work with raw. Do customers really notice it?

some of the C400 shots look really nice like at 1:55 and better than all of the FX6 shots, but some of them look like they were shot 3 stops under and brought up in the grade like at 2:22 where the colour is way off... think you need to work on your exposure a bit, or the camera has a busted sensor.. either way keep em coming :)
edit - ok watched the second half of the video my bad, I think your grading is fine when you're shooting with decent light, I prefer those shots to the sony by far, the footage looks more organic and less plasticky/digital (i've owned both a C70 and FX3, this is consistent with the canon v sony image), but yeah trying to match 12800 minimal light shots against golden hour shots will never end well

@@louie8488 thanks for the input. That sums up my frustration with grading this footage. The sunset vs blue hour footage was a challenge. It also told me I’ll probably think twice before going into 12,800 ISO. It’s very possible I missed the exposure on some shots as well. Not to sound like I did everything with intention, but part of me was thinking, if I am filming in raw I want to see what all I can bring back in post both in my highlights and shadows. I apologize, but all Canon cameras, including the 400, suffer from the same issue: they look overly digital, almost like a broadcast camera or a scene from a Spanish soap opera. Don’t get me wrong, they have a clean and beautiful look, and as a Canon shooter myself, I appreciate their color science, especially in photography. However, when it comes to video, Canon cameras lack that rich, cinematic texture you find with RED, ARRI, Blackmagic, or even higher-end Sony models like the FX6 and FX9.
Even with the stunning footage from the video above, it’s clear that Canon falls short of delivering that coveted cinematic feel. It’s not a question of lighting or timing-your work in capturing and color grading was phenomenal. It’s simply a limitation of Canon. You can use a cinematic lens, set up perfect lighting, and push the color grade to its limits, but the result will still look digital. Canon offers great color, no doubt, and some people love that aesthetic-but calling these cameras ‘cinema’ is a stretch.

@@patricioderito3722 that’s some good insight. Thank you. That is an issue I proposed in my previous video, a digital look on the c400. Some say embrace the new times, others say stick to a more traditional look. The one thing I’ve found about canon is it’s the jack of all trades (to me). Red is pretty niche and Sony has for greater advantage. But Canon gave me touch screen auto focus, and internal raw on as a one person crew on wedding films and commercial jobs which is how I was able to afford the camera in the first place with cameras like the R5, and C70. Red cameras are great if you got 2-3 ppl ready to use them on set/location. I think the biggest issue is in post because in my previous video with the c70 v the fx6 it was the Sony that looked too digital. But it could all boils down to our own eye and preferences too in this changing time of media and how we view it.

@@AlexanderJawfox I have to disagree with the comment avobe. The FX6 looked way more digital to my eyes. That said, the C400 still doesn't beat how organic the C70 makes things look.

@@brunoshoes864I’ve always thought the same myself. Sony cinema cameras have always seemed overly sharp and digital looking compared to Canon cinema cameras.

Sony never did nail their colour science and to this day, it still looks awful.
Canon on the other hand? As an Arri user, nothing gets closer to what Arri gives me, than Canon.
Come on Sony, you're playing catch up still. Terrible skin tones in particular.
