Understatement is literally device by which particular quality of person , object , emotions or situation is downplayed, or presented as being less than what is true or situation. Example isn’t very serious . I have to have this operation. I think so said professor mcgonall dryly. We teachers are rather good at magic , you know professor mc gongall j. K rowelings Harry Potter and the deathly hallows . Synonyms of understatement in literature sarcasm, irony , wry ness, matter of factness, satire . I remember I was at the barber's to have my hair cut. When he finished I wanted to make a joke so I went "You're good!" lol This is a perfect example of an understatement.

'Not bad' is probably the most used ironic statements in the uk. Example: a friend could pull up in a £200,000 ferrari and a not uncommon response would be 'that's not bad, not bad at all mate'.
