Do you think the relegation vote will pass?

They want 3 leagues (and it sounds like they'd want to create one between USLC and USL1), so they'd need some USLC teams to drop down to the middle tier and expansion teams (or smaller league teams like USL2) to fill out USL1. I think it would definitely drive more interest in USL, but the big question is if that increased interest also correlates to more revenue.

I think this vote is the first step before it goes to the owners. It’s a cool idea but it’s not a cure-all. More player budgeting and better facilities are bigger needs, but pro/rel along with these items can go a long way. The problem with this closed pro/rel idea is MLS can easily copy this… better yet, they can test a pro/rel setup in Next Pro at minimal risk first… I anticipate each MLS team will need 2 or more Next Pro teams soon

I think it will pass. USL needs to offer the fans something that MLS does not.
Now is this the only thing USL needs? Obviously not.
USL also needs top markets and soccer-specific stadiums. Fans are much more likely to go to matches when you're not playing on a baseball field.
It's not just about the team or the sport. It's about the fan experience.

Mosse's right - and yet, Alexi's realistic with his outlook. Ain't no way MLS voluntarily joins a pro/rel setup, and the USSF isn't going to force their hand, so the USL's banking on their own experiment being so successful that it pressures MLS to join in.

USL is growing rapidly, and listening to US Soccer fans. They have 10 teams looking to start in USL1 by 2026 and 4-6 in USLC... making that 3rd tier will be easy with their teams by then.

I’m happy to say that my community will be getting a USL team next year in 2025. They’ll be in League One. I like how it’s bringing the game closer to home. We’re a soccer loving community that continues to grow.

Sell the upside and promise parachute payments etc for the relegated owners. I agree with others that it is a joke without a pyramid but then I am brought up on English football. Relegation is the first step to a pyramid structure which makes every game almost for every team significant to the very end of the season. That must be worth a lot to broadcasters.

American soccer fans loves telling people what to do with their money, and people are paying hundreds of millions just to compete at a global competitive level

The way you get the owners to "voluntarily" assume the risk of promotion and relegation is to stop watching fake soccer and demand the real thing. This should be happening in the MLS as well because all of the "reasons" to not have pro/rel have morphed into pretexts.

As Alexi pointed out, business owners need to agree to pro/rel, and though there may be enough support to get it started, this will take a few years for realities not yet known to be acknowledged. It's a discovery process, and the USL prepared well for it. You won't get rid of closed leagues without these discoveries.

Theres no way I would allow this if I were a business owner... And I think regelation is a stupid concept anyways and bad for soccer in USA.

It’s America 🇺🇸 there is no promotion regulation in other leagues. NBA, NFL, NHL. Keep it that way. It’s not needed in America.

I don't think this works. Money between several clubs is vast. That's a problem I see

But in Europe there are also some clubs with a vast money gap compared to other teams but it works there

We 100% need pro/rel it makes every game count but also changes the mentality of teams and players. They will be more invested to not relegate or promote. Players will be more motivated. Imagine the bottom 3 now in mls not a lot of care or investment given from ownership down with a notable exception of Beckham's side. It is better entertainment, pushes for more quality top to bottom and brings interest.

Initially, MLS can just have a promotion, where top three teams from lower league gets three spots in MLS. (29+3)
Next season, of the three promoted, team with best record gets to stay and the bottom two have to play the top two from lower league for the remaining two spots. If the MLS teams finish below the promoted team for more than two seasons, they get put in the relegation pool.

Relegation would work in a 2 league system without having a detrimental affect on owners if they can commercialise the 2 league system. You would still have the jeopardy of relegation, which makes the back end of the season interesting.

You need it for the NFL! The XFL and USFL just joined. Should make it the 2nd league to the NFL. Can't keep watching the same crappy teams each season. You know within a month if you're team has a chance or not. But with relegation there's more to play for.
